Yeah, there’s a reason for that.

Anyway we know how this goes now: Brexit Party does really well in Euro election -> Tories freak out and go even more Hard Brexity -> more paralysis in Parliament, May clings on but can't do anything -> endless extensions -> election with Tories campaigning on an ultra-Brexity manifesto -> rest of the country goes "fuck no" -> Brexit Party win zero seats in GE.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 17 April 2019 14:42 (seven years ago)

it's funny how very thick it is, also funny that she identified the reason why her idea would never work ("Conservative MPs choose a final two contenders, and then it is up to the membership to elect their favourite.") and then just kept on typing like there was some point to continuing
it's not so funny that they decided to print it and put it in a highly visible place on the front page, just for hate clicks apparently

https://www.hopenothate.org.uk/2019/04/17/poll-briefing-brexit-dilemmas/

HOPE not hate asked YouGov to run a number of possible snap general election scenarios in which Labour took different Brexit position – and the results were startling:

If Labour went into a snap election offering the electorate a second referendum, then it would receive 31.5% of the public vote.
If Labour went into an election promising to implement a Brexit deal that includes a customs union, its share of the vote would drop to 20%.

if you believe those numbers are an accurate indication of what would actually happen in an election, then this seems like a argument in favour of a second referendum? particularly seeing as the other questions asked in that polling seem to indicate that a tory govt would be able to get away with anything other than a hard brexit

soref, Wednesday, 17 April 2019 16:36 (seven years ago)

The Government and the opposition are currently in talks to solve the Brexit impasse, but given the huge gulf in attitudes between voters of the two main parties, it is hard to see how party leaders can reach an agreement without tearing their parties apart.

There are some basic Brexit realities that those Labour and Conservative politicians huddled around the negotiating table will only be too acutely aware of:

- the overwhelming majority of Conservative voters want to leave the EU and leave immediately, even if it is without a deal.
- the overwhelming majority of Labour voters want to Remain in the EU, by a margin of almost two to one would be happy for Parliament to Revoke Article 50, and they want any deal reached to be put to a referendum.

does all this make it more likely that there is some kind of realignment of the parties/national govt situation?

soref, Wednesday, 17 April 2019 16:39 (seven years ago)

the talks were only ever just for show & a trap for both parties. they are now both seeking a pretext to collapse them in a way which damages the other

Ugh, third time trying to post this, it’s like the POST errors are trying to tell me to stop.

If anyone doesn’t get that at least part of Corbyn’s continual stressing that Labour will respect the result of the referendum was to offset the inevitable betrayal narrative, well, they don’t want to get it. Much easier to talk shit about Seumas Milne while Labour MPs are getting death threats and one of them has already been murdered.

A bit of levity: the protestors left Corbyn’s house:

Via @pa: When asked why they left, Tracee Williams, 55, said: “I don’t think this was a misstep but whether we’d do it again, I’m not so sure.

“We just really felt we had to bring it to his front door. I feel absolutely terrible about upsetting his wife.”

windmill jolyon... remain are polling on 25%

In a referendum on Leave/Remain we'll count the votes for Leave and the votes for Remain. The European Parliamentary elections are a proxy Leave/Remain referendum. If you want to Remain make sure you vote for an unambiguously Remain party.

— Jo Maugham QC (@JolyonMaugham) April 17, 2019

... and the crowd said DESELECT THEM (||||||||), Wednesday, 17 April 2019 19:47 (seven years ago)

this seemed like a more sensible analysis
https://mainlymacro.blogspot.com/2019/04/why-european-elections-will-be-painful.html?m=1

Given Labour's position and the lack of cooperation among the anti-Brexit parties, Remainers should not turn these European elections into a vote about being anti-Brexit, because they will lose badly. The combined vote for UKIP, the new Brexit party and the Conservatives is almost certain to exceed the combined vote for the LibDems, CHUK and the Greens. A smarter tactic would be, through the People’s Vote campaign, to make these elections into a vote about a People’s vote. The key difference of course is that Labour can potentially be counted as being in favour of a People’s Vote, and so making the European elections as a kind of referendum on a People’s Vote might succeed. Using the poll numbers above, the pro-People’s Vote parties have an overall majority.
