holy shit there was a cliff Johnson style puzzle game released last year? Woooooow thx ilg!

lumen (esby), Monday, 15 April 2019 20:43 (seven years ago)

I also played System's Twilight in the 90's which based just on that screenshot was almost certainly a direct influence upon System Syzygy! It was a good game. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/System%27s_Twilight

Dan I., Monday, 15 April 2019 20:47 (seven years ago)

I found out about System Syzygy from andrew plotkin's blog (he created system's twilight and also he was the guy who turned mafia into werewolf).

I threw Detroit a vote but definitely don’t recommend it unless “Quick Time Event: The Game” sounds up your alley or you’re a Clancy Brown superfan. Humorless, self-important, cliche, very clownable! AND YET the gimmick of pressing a series of buttons to make characters do boring things like set the table or gather wood eventually made me care about them more? It’s like, I tucked in this orphan girl and told her a bedtime story you’re damn right I’ll murder every human between her and the android haven of Canada.

HI DERE. If not for TLOU, I would definitely have voted for ace rhythm game Yakuza 0 (though if not for TLOU, I may not have gotten back into console gaming).

Audrey Tautoulogy (Leee), Monday, 15 April 2019 21:16 (seven years ago)

There's an iOS game called Calculator:The Game, it's got wacky buttons, so on the level I'm on now you start with 91 and your goal is to get to 19 in 6 button presses and the buttons available are '+5', 'Mirror' (12->1221) and 'Sum'

The Room is the OG very fancy looking room escape / object manipulation games, yes?

I did actually play System Syzygy last year, it was great but I would have completely forgotten about it if I'd voted (which I didn't)

Andrew Farrell, Monday, 15 April 2019 21:19 (seven years ago)

Also I will probably repeat this later but I heart ILE as somewhere that loves games but will give an industry behemoth like MHW 5 points total (NB this is not in any way a reflection on the quality of MHW)

Andrew Farrell, Monday, 15 April 2019 21:22 (seven years ago)

(xp @silby) if you're patient, wait for them to put Atelier Ayesha on switch which is both an entry point and the best game in the series according to several people i trust on this stuff (i haven't played it yet myself). if you're impatient, rorona is a fine entry point / litmus test, and totori is a bit harder but my favorite of the ones i've played

ciderpress, Monday, 15 April 2019 21:28 (seven years ago)

I can be pretty patient considering I still have to beat Octopath or at least beat someone's chapter 4 I'm so slow lol

yeah this is making me immediately interested as well

though it also made me realize that i've stopped getting the monthly emails from cliff's mailing list that i've been on for years and he stopped updating his site, hope he's okay

ciderpress, Monday, 15 April 2019 22:08 (seven years ago)

Moved too fast! I haven't heard of like 90% of these!
hole.io was fun.
I loved Theme Hospital, flaws and all, Mordy. But I am a cheapskate who will wait for that game to go under $5 or be included in a bundle for pretty much any PC game.

Nhex, Monday, 15 April 2019 22:52 (seven years ago)

that's fair. i don't regret paying for it - it had a good amount of content and my 7yo loves playing it too.

Mordy, Monday, 15 April 2019 22:56 (seven years ago)

bad north reminds me of ftl a lot

Mordy, Monday, 15 April 2019 23:37 (seven years ago)

None of my votes have shown up yet, but I played a bunch of NGU Idle after I saw it on the nominations thread. It's exactly what you'd expect an idle clicker thing to be in 2018 I guess? Both a parody of older idle clickers and a much more complex version of the same. It got it claws into me for a week or two but in retrospect I'd have been happier not picking it up in the first place.

JimD, Tuesday, 16 April 2019 13:27 (seven years ago)

NGU Idle was my nom and vote. I played it more than any other game in 2018, which was enough for me to give it a few points. It starts out very fiddly with the active game being much better than the passive game -- but there comes a point where the best strategy is to play it once briefly every 24 hours to collect some powerful tree fruit, then rebirth.

adam the (abanana), Tuesday, 16 April 2019 13:41 (seven years ago)

xxp

bad north like ftl is the kind of game I'll play for years cos I'm easily sated!

calzino, Tuesday, 16 April 2019 13:42 (seven years ago)

although a criticism is the random generating islands delays can be way too slow.

calzino, Tuesday, 16 April 2019 13:44 (seven years ago)

i'm back and ready for more countdown! Let's start with a game that barely missed being tied for 44th with a microslice of a first-place vote!

they're not booing you, sir, they're shouting "Boot Edge Edge" (Will M.), Tuesday, 16 April 2019 15:00 (seven years ago)

No one else played Dragon Quest last year?!?!?

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Tuesday, 16 April 2019 15:05 (seven years ago)

no one that voted!

these are not all of the possible side effects (Karl Malone), Tuesday, 16 April 2019 15:06 (seven years ago)

0.1 first place votes? hrm!
i wanted to play this but it got buried under everything else coming out. and Spider-Man iirc

Nhex, Tuesday, 16 April 2019 15:07 (seven years ago)

I will play it eventually but not at full price

L'assie (Euler), Tuesday, 16 April 2019 15:08 (seven years ago)

i played it! it's perfectly fine but left me a bit cold

ciderpress, Tuesday, 16 April 2019 15:09 (seven years ago)

felt like playing a jrpg greatest hits collection, every story beat was recognizable and i didn't find any meaningful throughline to tie it all together

ciderpress, Tuesday, 16 April 2019 15:10 (seven years ago)

when someone ranks 10 games at 10 points each, i give them all 0.1 first place votes. it's fun! we get some weeeird decimals sometimes

anyway sorry im back i had to do a real work there for a minute

fighter?

Mordy, Tuesday, 16 April 2019 15:46 (seven years ago)

the only tag fighter i've ever gotten into

ciderpress, Tuesday, 16 April 2019 16:04 (seven years ago)

also deserves props for raising the profile of under night which is the best active fighting game right now as it turns out

ciderpress, Tuesday, 16 April 2019 16:06 (seven years ago)

It's fun! Wish I had time to play it beyond the demo, but it still made my list. There were SO many fighters this year.
And yes, Under Night rules.

Nhex, Tuesday, 16 April 2019 16:16 (seven years ago)

yeah that demo weekend was so fun that it basically singlehandedly got me back into fighting games after like 10 years of ignoring them

ciderpress, Tuesday, 16 April 2019 16:20 (seven years ago)

Is that the first to get multiple votes? WE'VE CROSSED THE RUBICON.

hi I played Lumines for the first time last year, guess what it's good

don't mock my smock or i'll clean your clock (silby), Tuesday, 16 April 2019 17:44 (seven years ago)

much like tropical freeze, i think this is possibly the best game ever of its genre but it's not really a 2018 game

ciderpress, Tuesday, 16 April 2019 17:51 (seven years ago)

yeah yeah :P

don't mock my smock or i'll clean your clock (silby), Tuesday, 16 April 2019 17:52 (seven years ago)

i'm fine with them being on the list i just play too many games so its a much needed point of disqualification for my own ballot

ciderpress, Tuesday, 16 April 2019 17:54 (seven years ago)

still think u should blog

ilx is my blog

i think i said that last time though, i don't have a new witty comeback sorry

ciderpress, Tuesday, 16 April 2019 18:00 (seven years ago)

that's my vote. northgard is an RTS but the way it's designed it's more slow and methodical. you can overextend and when winter comes it'll destroy you which means that strategic considerations for expansion are more importantly than inputs per second. it's v clever. i haven't played much multiplayer with it but the campaign is definitely worth playing through.

Mordy, Tuesday, 16 April 2019 18:12 (seven years ago)

veering into "someone really liked this" territory!
