Boles to the Wolds (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 10 April 2019 21:32 (seven years ago)

De Gaulle's opposition to the British is often attributed to simple Anglophobia, an example of latter-day French dislike of "La perfide Albion". This position is supported by readings of De Gaulle's public speeches or reference to his relationship with his Allied comrades during the War, which could be euphemistically described as "turbulent". A particularly infamous, though fake, quotation of De Gaulle's in these scepter'd isles is "We shall stun [the British] with our ingratitude!"

not really long enough for a referendum, anyone would think they want us to leave

stet, Wednesday, 10 April 2019 22:36 (seven years ago)

The Tories can’t VONC Theresa May until December and this suggests the EU are trying to keep her in until then.

I think the date is probably a lot more about France than the UK.

Andrew Farrell, Wednesday, 10 April 2019 23:05 (seven years ago)

Jean-Claude Juncker was ‘really annoyed’ with Emmanuel Macron, according to diplomatic source. ‘France went on its own and has broken EU unity, it surprises us,’ a source rants to me!

We’ll break the EU before we break the Party.

Euro elections = REF2?

American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Wednesday, 10 April 2019 23:19 (seven years ago)

In as much as a big vote for pro or anti EU parties in the euros will be the next pivot point.

American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Wednesday, 10 April 2019 23:20 (seven years ago)

Except with a turnout of 30%.

Do you like 70s hard rock with a guitar hero? (Tom D.), Wednesday, 10 April 2019 23:20 (seven years ago)

suspect the turnout will be too poor to pin much on it, but it won't stop people trying xp yeah exactly

Boles to the Wolds (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 10 April 2019 23:20 (seven years ago)

We are about to be besieged with D’Hondt threads. Both turnout and attention could be enormous here; I don’t think this will be a 30% effort.

stet, Wednesday, 10 April 2019 23:21 (seven years ago)

OK, 35%.

Do you like 70s hard rock with a guitar hero? (Tom D.), Wednesday, 10 April 2019 23:21 (seven years ago)

Seriously, I think people are kidding themselves if they think people are going to go out in vote in a European election.

i can only vote in euro elections, general elections and uk referendums so i'll be enjoying being able to exercise my democratic right as a bloody red white and blue brexiteer boy from my canadian bolt-hole

findom haddie (jim in vancouver), Wednesday, 10 April 2019 23:27 (seven years ago)

Yeah no way is this election getting turnout. It will be low enough for even more cranks than usual to become MEPs

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Wednesday, 10 April 2019 23:33 (seven years ago)

Don’t follow this at all. It will be played by all sorts as a ref by proxy, and turnout will be corresponding. There are too many people too pissed off for it to be local election-scale.

stet, Wednesday, 10 April 2019 23:51 (seven years ago)

Think we'll need a separate betting thread for the over/under here

Less than 50 percent, easy

Boles to the Wolds (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 10 April 2019 23:55 (seven years ago)

The official thing the election is about (who gets to be your mep) is likely a moot point.

And the thing it’s supposedly a proxy referendum on, well, the actual referendum doesn’t appear to have been binding so it’s not clear why this one would be.

Very difficult to argue with anyone who says voting in these elections is pointless.

The over/under should be whether we’ll even beat the “normal” euro election turnout, ie not a lot per cent.

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Thursday, 11 April 2019 00:23 (seven years ago)

Don’t get me wrong, the campaign will be febrile and vile.

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Thursday, 11 April 2019 00:23 (seven years ago)

The euro turnout in 2009/2014 was 35% btw

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Thursday, 11 April 2019 00:24 (seven years ago)

I don't know - some people are actually pro-europe now! Certainly, if the media were to pump up the election...oh, never mind.

Leaghaidh am brón an t-anam bochd (dowd), Thursday, 11 April 2019 00:27 (seven years ago)

Thanks caek, i wondered what was normal and was appropriately conservative. Brexiters more likely to boycott and be encouraged to boycott than vote i wd guess

Andrew Farrell, Thursday, 11 April 2019 05:39 (seven years ago)

Farage's Brexit Party has two kick-off events over the next week - "This is place is democratically invalid let's slash the seats (and pick up expenses)" worked pretty well for his last job.

Uptown VONC (Le Bateau Ivre), Thursday, 11 April 2019 07:30 (seven years ago)

Can't see the logic in the EU agreeing, nay asking, UK to play along in the elections. It will hijack the whole damn thing; maybe not in the UK, but outside it most certainly.

Farage will be glad they got his salary sorted tho.

Uptown VONC (Le Bateau Ivre), Thursday, 11 April 2019 07:31 (seven years ago)

Also I know it's hard to believe but 5 years ago people just didn't care that much about the EU - I think it's safe to say that's changed now.

I reckon 50% is about right.

Turnout will be an excellent litmus test of how many people in the country are really committed Brexiters or FBPErs - I'd expect 80%+ turnout among ultras and a decent turnout among people who are otherwise reasonably politically engaged, while virtually no one else will bother to vote.

Also I know it's hard to believe but 5 years ago people just didn't care that much about the EU

Depressingly OTM.
