I hereby renounce the authority of any entity over my freedoms, apart from that of my parents (deceased), and hereinafter expect all governments or other entities to respect such freedoms as I may from time to time assert by speaking the formula "You're not my mother" or, alternatively "You're not the boss of me".

the haunted victorian pencil is at it again

Parliament cannot bind its successors, the Prime Minister’s promises have not invariably proved reliable and there has been little sincerity from the EU. https://t.co/cLblWCl1kD

They're trying to exasperate EU leaders into a No Deal scenario, it's the only thing that makes sense.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 9 April 2019 09:15 (seven years ago)

makes sense, seems to me that all their whingeing about the backstop is meant chiefly to fuck with the EU and their desire not to renegotiate the withdrawal agreement.

L'assie (Euler), Tuesday, 9 April 2019 09:22 (seven years ago)

The backstop will lead directly to customs union and a lot of something something alignment, so I get why they don't like it, but it's impossible to combine hard brexit with the Good Friday deal.

It's impressive that he can tweet stuff like that without the leader he is undermining saying anything, but then that's basically the problem, right?

Frederik B, Tuesday, 9 April 2019 09:52 (seven years ago)

A referendum can apparently bind every Parliament from now til the end of time though, eh

The 28 remaining Tory Brexit rebels are meeting separately from the rest of the ERG. They met at lunchtime today. Their WhatsApp group is called 'the real mainstream'

— Ross Kempsell (@rosskempsell) April 8, 2019

Anyone still pushing no deal with the pretence it will change anything is on a hiding to nothing.

Barnier: "whatever happens, the EU will stand fully behind Ireland"

Barnier also confirms that in case of no-deal EU would not open trade talks with UK without agreement on Irish border, citizen rights, & financial settlement

— Alberto Nardelli (@AlbertoNardelli) April 8, 2019

The EU confirmed it will support farmers yesterday in a no deal scenario which will benefit Ireland and France the most. Meanwhile, they’ll be slaughtering lambs by the million here.

A small Brexit update: I am told that Italy's thinking on article 50 extension is aligned with president Tusk’s long flexible extension proposal

— Alberto Nardelli (@AlbertoNardelli) April 8, 2019

Also linking this so I can laugh for a year at anyone who thinks Italy is going to take direction from a few cranky foreign backbenchers.

gyac, Tuesday, 9 April 2019 10:16 (seven years ago)

Have decided to resign from ERG. Despite excellent Chairmanship by @Jacob_Rees_Mogg who has accommodated all views I can no longer be a member of caucas which is preventing WA4 from passing. Hardcore element of ā€˜Unicorn’ dreamers now actually endangering #Brexit

— Daniel Kawczynski (@DKShrewsbury) April 8, 2019

Kawczynski has quit the ERG and he is close to being as comically right-wing as they get.

ShariVari, Tuesday, 9 April 2019 11:03 (seven years ago)

part of his comical appeal is he appears to dumb as a box of rocks and is something like 7 feet tall.

gyac, Tuesday, 9 April 2019 11:31 (seven years ago)

so if this long extension goes through... are we expecting ERG to precipitate a VONC in the commons?

A thread with numbers on the not entirely shocking finding that support for No Deal amongst Leavers varies with how well-off they are.

Thread: We've done a UCL-YouGov, 5000+ UK voters – asked people to rank outcomes for Brexit. @HuffPostUK article here https://t.co/DYmfKaVqeH

Main pts: OVERALL, No Deal is LEAST preferred outcome (despite what ERG say), but it is the MOST preferred outcome for LEAVE voters. 1/6 pic.twitter.com/FCtMeMbN4x

good to see the Remain bloc are still seeking to heal the nation's divisions

the last 10 minutes of BBC1's lunchtime news was two puff pieces, first on Bletchley Park and then on Concorde-but-mostly-the-Anglo-end-of-Concorde. far be it from me to question anybody's editorial integrity but what the sweet fucking fuck?

xp I've been visited by the ghost of my future and withdraw the question.

Andrew Farrell, Tuesday, 9 April 2019 12:44 (seven years ago)

This crowd, eh?

Andrew Bridgen: "It's hard to believe we used to run a quarter of the globe from Westminster."

"We used to have a five-star Michelin restaurant in Westminster. Now we accept our laws in pre-packaged deals from Bruseels ready to put in the microwave."

— Thomas Colson (@tpgcolson) April 9, 2019

Mark Francois: "My message to the EU: If you try to hold us in, you will be facing perfidious Albion on speed."

— Thomas Colson (@tpgcolson) April 9, 2019

Anne Marie-Morris tells the audience "my mother used to have a picture of Edward Heath," prompting a loud series of gasps from the audience

— Thomas Colson (@tpgcolson) April 9, 2019

Anne Marie Morris on PM: "That lady must go."

Says MPs will need to wait until December to force no-confidence vote (most MPs think it could be done much earlier, even if May doesn't go willingly.)

— Thomas Colson (@tpgcolson) April 9, 2019

Anne Marie Morris: "I do not think that wretched deal will ever get through in this parliament. In terms of Labour they could and, in theory, should, bring a no-confidence vote ... But Mr Corbyn doesn't really want an election."

— Thomas Colson (@tpgcolson) April 9, 2019

Anne Marie Morris says she would NOT vote against May if Labour brought a no-confidence motion.

"If that is brought by Jeremy, then no. We do not need until we're ready a general election ... Although I do agree we will get a general election this year."

— Thomas Colson (@tpgcolson) April 9, 2019

gyac, Tuesday, 9 April 2019 12:48 (seven years ago)

"bring the nation back together" is that general rhetorical guff that keeps getting aired by pols/journos/buffoons but the obvious truth is that conviction Remainers are no more interested in searching for a compromise position than conviction Brexiters, hence the jolly dance towards M.A.D. continues

Boles to the Wolds (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 9 April 2019 12:49 (seven years ago)

". you will be facing perfidious Albion on speed."

nowt worse than getting bored to death by a blathering speed-freak in the pub and boasting about perfidy seems a bit fucking thick!

Even more gurning than usual.

gyac, Tuesday, 9 April 2019 12:53 (seven years ago)

surely gammon on speed is just bacon?

Boles to the Wolds (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 9 April 2019 12:54 (seven years ago)

xxxp And you're getting this from the data point that the _first choice_ for 82% of remainers would be remain?

Andrew Farrell, Tuesday, 9 April 2019 12:56 (seven years ago)

I googled to check this & the Wikipedia page is now the second link!
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gammon_(insult)

gyac, Tuesday, 9 April 2019 12:56 (seven years ago)

"Perfidious Albion on speed" sounds the sort of thing you'd find out in Pete Doherty's notebook, crossed out for being too stupid shortly before he shat himself in public.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 9 April 2019 12:57 (seven years ago)

xp suspect he’s getting it from TiG, LD & assorted other gobshites refusing to vote for any of the softer Brexit options at indicative votes.

gyac, Tuesday, 9 April 2019 12:57 (seven years ago)

My god, Mark Francois has been in Parliament since 2001, I thought he just appeared from nowhere two months ago.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 9 April 2019 13:00 (seven years ago)

The Brexiteer dream has fallen through
But the Albion sails on course
So launch the tweets and start the crying
You wanted *this* divorce

gyac, Tuesday, 9 April 2019 13:01 (seven years ago)

It's not a poll of MPs, though?

Andrew Farrell, Tuesday, 9 April 2019 13:10 (seven years ago)

it reflects the same kind of intransigence that the MPs are playing with

i mean obviously, there's a lot of it about

Boles to the Wolds (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 9 April 2019 13:16 (seven years ago)

Does Mark Francois understand the origin of the phrase he’s using?

gyac, Tuesday, 9 April 2019 13:20 (seven years ago)

I was gonna say

... and the crowd said DESELECT THEM (||||||||), Tuesday, 9 April 2019 13:21 (seven years ago)

He made it to the wiki of the phrase today, which was probably his goal.

Uptown VONC (Le Bateau Ivre), Tuesday, 9 April 2019 13:44 (seven years ago)

I think part of the art of perfidy is not announcing in advance that you are a dishonorable shit heel, that just gives the game away!

calzino, Tuesday, 9 April 2019 13:56 (seven years ago)

i always figured these dicks had a general sense of what the phrase meant but approved of it because running/ruining the world is what Albion is ordained by God to do

Boles to the Wolds (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 9 April 2019 14:15 (seven years ago)

but that might well be an overextension of credit

Boles to the Wolds (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 9 April 2019 14:15 (seven years ago)
