the argument has been made that within those constituencies the leavers were in the main not also labour voters, but afaik we don't really have the data

ogmor, Tuesday, 2 April 2019 09:49 (seven years ago)

it might be overstated but there are a significant number of leavers even within the party, curious how the elections will pan out, talk of low turnout

Christ, stet’s post about TW reminded me to link this absolute joy spotted elsewhere on twitter the other day:

guys if you see jack straw in the street, please don't let him forget he's a war criminal

One “minor benefit” of the Brexit crisis, the former foreign secretary Jack Straw revealed last night, is that people no longer berate him on the tube, accusing him of being a ‘war criminal’. Nowadays, he told a public meeting on Peace vs Justice at Inner Temple Hall in central London, they buttonhole him and tell him that politics wasn’t in such a chaotic state in his day.

Straw, who was in the Labour cabinet during the Iraq War, defended the legality of the conflict and also disclosed that he regretted having to release General Pinochet after he was given evidence that the Chilean dictator was not medically fit to stand trial.

at least TiG can now add a pledge to fight for a no-deal brexit as well as bringing back national service to their embryonic party manifesto.

gyac, Tuesday, 2 April 2019 10:32 (seven years ago)

The bottom 30 constituencies when you rank by % who signed the revoke petition are all Labour seats, including Tom Watson’s. Revoke is a dicey thing for them to be seen to support even now.

Yeah, but this is supporting revoke in the very specific flowchart destination of

1) Neither May's deal nor any other deal pass the house, with two days to go.
2) The EU won't provide the UK an extension of any kind.
3) MPs vote for revocation rather than No Deal.

This is pretty much a quantum of "well, I suppose one of those is worse than the other".

I do get the "This Is Betrayal", and Labour desire not to get hit by that slurry-spreader, but in that instance, it's not more Betrayal than No Deal, and it's not more Betrayal than everything that Theresa May has been doing for the last three years.

Andrew Farrell, Tuesday, 2 April 2019 10:36 (seven years ago)

The other alternative is "The SNP is gay", but given that Joanna Cherry actually is gay, I would not have phrased it that way. Which I should probably not have phrased it that way in the first place - sorry all.

Andrew Farrell, Tuesday, 2 April 2019 10:48 (seven years ago)

factor rather than alternative

Andrew Farrell, Tuesday, 2 April 2019 10:48 (seven years ago)

SNPbad is the accepted nomenclature

Matt DC, Tuesday, 2 April 2019 11:03 (seven years ago)

Revoke will be seen as betrayal. The only reason for it is MPs were not able to work together to carry out the result to at least a soft Brexit. "Europe can't give an extension" will be recast as "they put a gun to our heads". What May hasn't done will soon by forgotten should that be the final outcome.

May is about to do another podium thing outside number 10 soon after a day of talks, anyone expecting her to say anything new?

MAY: The Leader of the Opposition and I have been alerted to the existence of a...squints at autocue scrobbling service that is believed to belong to the Deputy Leader of the Labour Party...

gyac, Tuesday, 2 April 2019 17:11 (seven years ago)

I think in a sense we all belong to the Deputy Leader of the Labour Party now.

Andrew Farrell, Tuesday, 2 April 2019 17:15 (seven years ago)

Oh yeah the bit:

"Theresa May says she understands some people are so fed up that they want to leave with no deal. But she supports leaving with one and says we need a short extension to article 50.

She says the debate cannot be allowed to drag on and adds that the Commons’ approach has not worked.

May says she is offering to sit down with the leader of the opposition, Jeremy Corbyn, to come up with a plan to leave with a deal. But she says that deal must include her withdrawal agreement."

Shit. Does anyone know the web address for Zoopla?

Andrew Farrell, Tuesday, 2 April 2019 17:15 (seven years ago)

"May says the extension would be “as short as possible” and would end once a deal was struck.

She says any plan both she and Corbyn agreed upon would then be put to MPs for approval with a view to it being taken to next week’s European Council meeting.

If she and Corbyn cannot agree a unified approach, May says, then a series of options for the future relationship would be put to the Commons in a series of votes. The prime minister adds that the government would abide by the decision of the House – but only if Labour did so too.

May also says she wants the process to be finished by 22 May so that the UK does not have to take part in the European Parliament elections."

I mean in fairness, this is new. It's also nuts.
