a few days ago I listened to that town hall AOC did with Chris Hayes and when she said the Republicans passed a constitutional amendment to stop FDR from being reelected I was like, "I hope nobody heard that."

dude the Republicans were in the minority in 1944. They passed the amendment in 1947 after winning majorities in house and senate.

yes, GOP regained Congress for the first time since the Hoover years. Truman was exempt from the amendment.

She misspoke. I have no doubt that she knows when FDR died and when the amendment was passed, just like I know 100% that Barack Obama doesn't think there really is 54 states.

But like Neil Armstrong forgetting the difference between "man" and "mankind," she misspoke. It's dumb of the right-wingers to run off with it, but let's not pretend that what she literally said was fact.

xxp it also specifically exempted the sitting president at the time of proposal or passage and applied only to future presidents. So she was right for the wrong reasons -- it was definitely a reaction to Roosevelt's third and fourth terms, but would not have stopped him from having them because he would have been grandfathered in.

she got it wrong, it's an understandable mistake, the 22nd was clearly targeted at FDR and his legacy, but insisting that she actually got it right based on a strained reading of history is not a great strategy

Yeah, I don't think that is doubling down. She's not wrong, her selection of words relative to the timing of how it played out is not great as shown in that newsweek article.
