Because closing the border to LEGAL traffic and trying to stop illegal immigration are obviously two different things? The wall (as bad an idea as it is) is not designed to "close the border," it's designed to prevent people from making unauthorized crossings. Close the border means close the legal crossings.

I feel like this is a common tactic -- deliberately misconstruing what the other side is saying rather than arguing against it. It's great for the echo chamber but does nothing to convince anyone.
