i remember seeing this ad (the first one) constantly as well:

For some shows it’s hard to locate the original promo since they have been revived so many times. Just went looking for Pump Boys and Dinettes, although that wasn’t as ubiquitous as the one’s we’ve mentioned so far.

^^^When i was working at one bank and reviewing some broker statements, I sae some illiquid shares of Crazy Eddie in someone's account, like 20 years later. OMG that was one of the first scams that I remembered from my childhood.

Andrea Martin as Indira, no?

If they were parodying it on SCTV, does that mean these Broadway ads were not just local?

Elly Mae Bumpit (James Redd and the Blecchs), Sunday, 3 March 2019 01:00 (seven years ago)

yeah, once it opened in Toronto I imagine they used the same ad.

Sorry if cud was posted as I can’t see but “we’re not candy, even though we look so fine and dandy…we are serious we could make you delirious. You should have a healthy fear of us” etc is my all time fave. Busta Rhymes as well.

Also Milford Plaza, beautiful Mt Airy Lodge…

I actually saw thompson twins do a 2 or 3 song lipsync “set” at action park in maybe 83 or 84. They were like 25 feet from us like, on the sidewalk.

Hunt3r, Sunday, 3 March 2019 05:40 (seven years ago)

i went to action park once and got banged up/minor injury to my hand. it was fun as hell but the ride i got injured on was def unsafe.

the second of the two above is permanently in my head so that if ever i see a chorus line mentioned, the ONLY response in my head is "gimmetheball gimmetheball gimmetheball...YEAH"! i don't even remember the first on tho.

Wanted to mention that the Chiller Theater animated creeped me out too, probably a little more than even Gumby and Pokey or Davey and Goliath.

Theorbo Goes Wild (James Redd and the Blecchs), Sunday, 3 March 2019 19:23 (seven years ago)

Had forgotten these last two were animated by the same guy. Also just found this interesting Davey and Goliath takeoff called He Was Once, not to derail my own thread.

One thing about the Million Dollar Movie- thanks for posting that - is that back in the day I believe it was less common for television channels to show movies so the MMM would show all kinds of good stuff that young Marty Scorsese would watch like Powell and Pressburger’s The Red Shoes, but later they seemed to just be showing stuff the other stations didn’t want over and over again, such as Mighty Joe Young.

Theorbo Goes Wild (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 4 March 2019 03:07 (seven years ago)

MDM not MMM

Theorbo Goes Wild (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 4 March 2019 11:03 (seven years ago)

I’m still stuck on the Dagostino one. I remember as a kid on Long Island thinking that it was such a real city supermarket. Years later I transferred to NYU and was housed in a midtown hotel during my first semester. The day I moved in my mom took me to a Dagostino to get groceries and I remember thinking - Wow I really live in the city now! Lol.

Jerry and Anne did these for years

Feel like I was even more likely to hear the radio commercials when I was upstate.

There was a pretty good Steve Coogan Alan Partridge joke involving this beverage which surprised me at the time because I for some reason thought it was Tri-State- or at most US-only.

This is interesting:
https://www.nytimes.com/1976/08/24/archives/advertising-rca-shifts-color-tv-strategy.html

Many spokesmen on radio and TV commercials have become celebrities, particularly when they are the principal owners of the businesses they talk about. If you don't believe it, catch the “Midday Live!” program on Channel 5 today at 11:30 A.M.

For in addition to what may be considered typical talk show guests—such as Rita Moreno and Jerry Stiller of the new film, “The Ritz”—five “stars” of the world of commercials are slated to appear. They are Frank Perdue of Perdue Inc., Tom Carvel of the Carvel Corporation, Sam Goody of the recordstore chain bearing his name, Leo Wiser of the Automobile Club of America and Sy Syms of Syrns clothiers.

What's the story?
