6 of the last 7 Best Actor wins have been for biographical roles. Something broken.

I can also believe Streisand collects self-portraits.

The feminine side of (Sanpaku), Monday, 25 February 2019 03:51 (seven years ago)

xpost

Must be why I've only seen one of the last 7 best actor wins!

Timothée Charalambides (cryptosicko), Monday, 25 February 2019 03:52 (seven years ago)

All is forgiven if its Olivia Coleman or Melissa McCarthy. If its Gaga, you're dead to me, Academy.

Olivia coleman for actress is the first pleasant surprise of the night.

Just when will it be Glenn Close's year?

piscesx, Monday, 25 February 2019 04:01 (seven years ago)

OK, she's delightful.

Timothée Charalambides (cryptosicko), Monday, 25 February 2019 04:03 (seven years ago)

Best speech of the night.

adam the (abanana), Monday, 25 February 2019 04:03 (seven years ago)

HOLY SHIT

Glenn Close proves what a good actress she is by smiling and clapping.

Let's have sensible centrist armageddon (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 25 February 2019 04:05 (seven years ago)

And one of the two shit nominees wins BP.

adam the (abanana), Monday, 25 February 2019 04:15 (seven years ago)

Re:Donen & The Death Montage: I saw somewhere once that they have to have it prepared a couple weeks in advance (due to timing and clearing the clips), so anyone who dies prior to the ceremony has to wait until next year.

That said, wasn't a big exception made for Whitney Houston or somebody else this decade?

You were saying, about Slant’s predictions, Morbs? Not sure many others got 7 of the top 8.

zama roma ding dong (Eric H.), Monday, 25 February 2019 04:21 (seven years ago)

I walk into the living room, where my wife out of sheer desperation has the Awards turned on. I hear the producer of Green Book sating "This was a movie about love." My reaction: well, it's about time!

A is for (Aimless), Monday, 25 February 2019 04:22 (seven years ago)

lol Peter Farrelly

Van Horn Street, Monday, 25 February 2019 04:31 (seven years ago)

Farrelly winning for a segratation film in front of Coogler and Lee's face is just straight evil mise en scène and why would one continue watching this dumb ceremony after that.

Van Horn Street, Monday, 25 February 2019 04:40 (seven years ago)

I assume he was listing names so the son couldn't have time to say something stupid (see his Globes speech), or at least that was the intended joke.

adam the (abanana), Monday, 25 February 2019 04:40 (seven years ago)

great job New Yorker spelling Coleman's name and face wrongly.

an incoherent crustacean (MatthewK), Monday, 25 February 2019 04:44 (seven years ago)

what should I watch tonight: OF FATHERS AND SONS or FREE SOLO?

(I've seen MINDING THE GAP and loved it)

k3vin k., Monday, 25 February 2019 04:45 (seven years ago)

Free Solo is terrific. If only for the relationship between character and filmmakers!

Van Horn Street, Monday, 25 February 2019 04:47 (seven years ago)

I want to watch Free Solo, but only if I can tie a safety line to my bedframe.

family friendly "frells" & "fracks" (Sanpaku), Monday, 25 February 2019 04:51 (seven years ago)

yeah I am personally terrified of heights so...

there is remarkably little discussion of OF FATHERS AND SONS that I can really find anywhere

k3vin k., Monday, 25 February 2019 04:57 (seven years ago)

Watch MERU before you watch FREE SOLO imho

Also this guy turned in his words impressively fast imo

I haven’t seen many of the other nominated film but the favourite is a great movie and the performances by the three leads are really excellent. Well deserved win by Olivia Coleman.

A Quiet Place was really robbed.

piscesx, Monday, 25 February 2019 05:46 (seven years ago)

Watched the Olivia Colman speech, and it will be the only thing I watch from these Oscars. Glenn Close steaming worth it alone, but most wild to see Yorgos Lanthimos crying at the Oscars. Awesome.

On the other hand,

yeah you woulda lost anyway, Shelton.

Kudos on Green Book I suppose, Eric, you know to expect the worst.

True, they used to split with the physically and developmentally challenged.

I saw about 10 minutes early on, and it feels so good.

If you wonder what a "champion of Green Book" sounds like, well, here is renowned liberal racist awards blogger Jeffrey Wells.

Alas, the p.c. left tried to kill Green Book over and over. Ask anyone in the Oscar-strategizing business — it was one of the ugliest attempted takedown campaigns in Hollywood history.

But Academy members, to their eternal credit, told the haters to stuff it. It’s not that I think Green Book is an especially brilliant or mesmerizimg film, or that it delivers a profoundly meaningful subcurrent or after-vibe or what-have-you, but the tears of joy that came to my eyes when it won are about the glorious decision by Academy voters to tell the Stalinist lefties and p.c. virtue-signallers to go fuck themselves…that they like or love what Green Book is about and how it made them feel, and to hell with the snooties.

as soon as I see "virtue-signallers" is when I know I'm definitely reading a well-informed and nuanced correspondent.

Wells has always been a crank, now he can join the Intellectual Dark Web

jaymc, Monday, 25 February 2019 14:14 (seven years ago)

I kind of hovered for the first half--DVD going, No Country for Old Men on TV (seemed apropos: "that colossal goat-fuck out in the desert"), some computer time in the adjacent room--caught as much of the second half as I could stand. Highlight was Lady Gaga's Lola Heatherton speech ("Bradley Cooper, I want to BEAR YOUR CHILD!") about how tough she's got it. Disappointed that Jonas Mekas was left off the death roll.

When I saw that trailer for the Elton John movie, my thoughts were basically just "I guess we're going to get one of these every year now"
