If people are going to rise to NP's bait then threads will turn into insult trading and nonsense. No point killfiling because threads will still be full of other peoples insults and retorts back, which means you have to killfile them too, and even then the topic is derailed because the energy is sucked out of topic and into this, thread becomes unusable anyway.

As narcissism lives off validation and attention, only real answer is "is the post I'm about to respond to, actually worth responding to, or am I being had?".

not necessarily a problem with this, having a person dedicated thread where the person can do battle with their opponents can be another way of taking that out of whichever thread happens to be hosting it at the time. Nested threads like on reddit would fix the issue better as it wouldn't derail from the content related parts of a thread and could easily be collapsed for people who didn't want to participate

i just want to note for the record that though the message says "banned permanently" as long as i've known it a 51 isn't actually a permaban and will expire (though maybe this has changed and i don't know what i'm talking about)

and i don't think that one disliked poster getting 51'd is in any way a wider commentary on the fairness or not of "the system" any more than a guilty person getting convicted is a commentary on the fairness of the justice system

that said i do think the "system" works, because the mods are pretty diligent here about issuing permabans to the most egregious shitposters

Telling tales out of school here, but oone of the things I hated worst about modding was seeing good people like Fredrik get 51'd twice while you only accrue a handful of FP's, despite your mewling, telephone toughguy posting style.

Keeping my opinions about various posters private, I will say that I would most like to ban people who engage with the people they want to 51, instead of ignoring them. My killfile does quite well at blocking the incomprehensibles, the imbeciles, the assholes, the attention-seekers. But then there are decent posters who engage with those I've blocked, and this is what really ruins threads. Just ignore the bad posts! If that means quitting ILX then so be it. But it is unlikely you will change consistency lousy posters.

I like Fred too but and I'm betting most of FPs he collects he deserves and the one time (I think?) he was banned he deserved that too.

re: not feeding the trolls/"just ignore him": this is easy to say but the result can be threads full of trolly and/or hateful shit that just sits there unremarked. what does this say to the casual poster or lurker about what kind of discussion space this is? what does it say to those whose hardships are being mocked for trolLOLz if the community at large were to conclude "this doesn't bother me much"? getting shed of bad-faith posters like NP actually boosts my faith in ilx a bit.
