I’m the guy at my office who hand grinds his own beans and uses an Aeropress. I kind of want that just to get the reactions.

I really like the siphon, its seems smoother than the Chemex, that may be a functionalists of meetups putting too hot water into the Chemex whereas the siphon kind of brevets that.

Whilst I was looking for that I found this coffee making contraption:

I am staying somewhere that just has a regular drip coffee maker. I have not used one of these in over 10, 15, 20? years and have never owned one. I went to make coffee and got stumped about whether I needed to leave the lid off or on the coffee pot. I left it off. There is only one button on the machine and I managed to mess up the process (despite having been a barista and serving coffee in a bar before).

If you don't put the lid on the coffee pot the nub on the lid doesn't nudge the little tip above that releases the coffee. I was defeated.

I do want that siphon coffee thing though.

all the air bnbs and hotels i have stayed at recently always just has a nescafe pod thing. Those also take me a minute to figure out.

I want an airbnb that ONLY has one of those steampunk vacuum dealies just to piss off the guests, because it's orders of magnitude harder to figure out than any drip maker.

Also I'm no coffee snob but isn't using pre-ground supermarket coffee in that thing like using an elaborate hand-blown glass bong to smoke seedy ditchweed?

I don't really understand what the vacuum siphon thingy accomplishes tbh, it just seems like a more elaborate way of making french press coffee, or maybe more like a percolator with more temp control?

i don't understand much about the difference between apparatuses either. i'm beginning to think it's all the same. i'm annoyed.

I had siphon coffee once -- I don't remember what coffee they used but something decent. My reaction was that it was a nice, clean-tasting coffee that maybe was subtly better than if the same coffee had been made drip or press, but seemed unworth the fuss -- much like with the Clover machine. Whereas the difference a good espresso machine makes is enormous.

Siphon is my favourite non-espresso coffee right now, more body than drip, less stewed than French press, much less risk of over heating than either. I’ve only started doing it at home since I started working from home, so it’s a nice way if taking a break, kitchen is too small for a decent espresso machine and besides if I want that I can walk round the corner.

a la pavoni will take about as much room as a siphon (and cost 6x as much and have a steep learning curve and cause serious burns a couple times, but so worth it)

i am too clumsy as a person in the world to be trusted with such a pretty & precarious contraption

I’ve always wanted a pavoni, maybe after we move. $30 siphon will do till then.

Finally using my french press for warm coffee. I'm a total non coffee snob but y'know I'm in my 40s

my oxo barista brain is still treating me really good

might have a possible grinder situation going on -- have one of those bodum bistro burr grinders (say that one fast, hah) and the little timer dial doesn't seem to be doing much. it stops grinding randomly, but it's possible it just has a clog or something and it's freezing up

gonna have to do some cleanout/grinder surgery this week to figure out if it's a mechanical issue

when it clogs it makes a VERY violent sound so I'm not sure it's that but it does come apart easily so rooting around is pretty painless

mostly irritated because running it for 20 seconds on the right setting creates the exact amount i'd need to run a 4 cup batch through the coffee maker and i'm currently back to measuring scoops until this situation is rectified

made some strong ass coffee last night for a long day today. super caffeinated, properly caffeinated. mild headache now & earlier, took an advil. but I feel good. sleep soon. ah. another day. not so bad

Fresh coffee always surprises me in terms of how delicious it is vs stuff that’s been in your freeezer for a month /deepthought

This week the beans are from Guatemala and I’m not liking them as much as the Ethiopian ones. More bitter but not in a good way.
