Still in his inbox are a slew of important vacancies to fill, including defense secretary, interior secretary and chief of staff. His attorney general, United Nations ambassador and Environmental Protection Agency chief are all serving in an acting capacity while waiting for Senate confirmation votes of his nominees. The White House on Tuesday sent 51 judicial nominations to the Senate, returning names that had gone unacted on last year.

Mr. Trump expressed no urgency when asked by reporters recently about all the acting officials in the upper echelon of his administration. “I like acting,” he said. “It gives me more flexibility.”

deep sigh. it gives you more flexibility, while also introducing uncertainty among the people who actually have to do the work (when they're paid to work, that is) and aren't sure what their agency's major initiatives will be until someone comes in on a permanent basis.

He's daring her to cancel

President Trump said Wednesday he will forge ahead with plans to deliver the State of the Union address in the House chamber on Jan. 29, despite objections from Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.).

In a letter to Pelosi, Trump said he has been assured by national security officials there are “no security concerns regarding the State of the Union address” and “therefore, I will be honoring your invitation.”

“It would be so very sad for our country if the State of the Union were not delivered on time, on schedule, and very importantly, on location!” Trump wrote.

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 23 January 2019 17:29 (five years ago) link

The head of the Democratic Caucus said Wednesday that it’s all but certain party leaders will prevent President Trump from giving his State of the Union address if the government remains closed on its scheduled Jan. 29 date.

“It’s absolutely not clear … what his present intention is,” Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) told reporters in the Capitol. “But I can say that unless the government is reopened, it’s highly unlikely that the State of the Union is going to take place on the floor of the United States House of Representatives.”

Yerac, Wednesday, 23 January 2019 17:42 (five years ago) link

this is sorta interesting

In the new Politico–Morning Consult poll, 72 percent of voters said they oppose putting funding toward a wall even if it's the only way to end the government shutdown.

The poll also found that 43 percent of respondents support the construction of the wall while 49 percent oppose building the wall.

so 29% only support the wall if mexico will pay for it?

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Wednesday, 23 January 2019 17:56 (five years ago) link

er duh i did my math wrong there but point being support seems to drop dramatically when the us paying for it is involved

Trump's idea of a threat sounds like, "If you're not careful, I'm going to FedEx this week-old bologna sandwich to your mom's."

E Pluripubis Unum (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 23 January 2019 19:20 (five years ago) link

xpost yeah i don't know, trump used to have people like cohen make threats like

"I will make sure that you and I meet one day while we're in the courthouse. And I will take you for every penny you still don't have. And I will come after your Daily Beast and everybody else that you possibly know," Cohen said. "So I'm warning you, tread very fucking lightly, because what I'm going to do to you is going to be fucking disgusting. You understand me?"

"You write a story that has Mr. Trump's name in it, with the word rape, and I'm going to mess your life up … for as long as you're on this frickin' planet … you're going to have judgments against you, so much money, you'll never know how to get out from underneath it," he added.

if some asshole walked up to me and said that, i'd feel really threatened, even if it was obvious that the asshole was also really dumb

Karl Malone, Wednesday, 23 January 2019 19:32 (five years ago) link

this has pretty much been trump's way of business for a very long time, threatening people with lawsuits and figuring that they'd back down or settle rather fight an endless legal battle. i'm sure he thought he'd be able to continue this strategy in a modified fashion as president, perhaps having even more tools of aggression and intimidation at his disposal as the head of state.
