Absolutely no one likes how long the broadcast is. Putting a firm cap on it (3 hours) and doing only two montages (memoriam and + rando) would probably have more people stay tuned in. Or do they make it so long for commercial dollars?

I was (kind of) joking, I definitely would be stressed out spending 3+ hours in front of cameras

as a viewer I've never minded the length of it, for people on the west coast it doesn't run so late that we have to worry about getting up for work the next day

ok looking it up I'm surprised to see on wikipedia that it's run closer to 4 hours than 3 hours the last six years in a row

I hold the opposing view that people don't care about the results as much as they care how entertaining the broadcast is. People obv. remember the results more than the presenter but if there's no one to host the show that's going to make you laugh, or possibly make you laugh, then no one will care enough to watch with much enthusiasm. Watching Chris Rock presenting in the year of *oscars so white* was a treat, for example.

Also, people talk about how it's too long but the fact that it's too long is the point of it. If it was actually too long then they could just press-release the results. It would make for terrible oscar parties though.

The fact that it's too long is what gives it the little cultural currency that it has. If it lasts two hours and doesn't have a host then it is truly fucked.

I agree, yet I still hold the 2001 telecast with Steve Martin as host was the most fleet of foot.

Steve Martin was the best. I loved his opening line: "800m people around the world are watching us, and they're all thinking the same thing: we're all gay"

So long as it keeps the Oscars from adding a g-d stunt category, I'm fine with them keeping best song and the other twenty-odd categories.
