People are sharing this about on Twitter, i've no recollection of it at all. It must've been cut from the tv coverage in the UK, they did a next-day highlights package on the BBC in the 80s, until the early 90s when Sky began showing it live.

No, didn't they change the rules again after the O.J. debacle?
no Wiseman again is of course a disgrace, but they gave him an honorary last year.

Just looked at the list. Mild rooting interest in Bale--no feelings about anybody else. They should give some kind of an award for the "It's Too Late to Turn Back Now" scene in BlacKkKlansman.

you guys aware that two blockbusters are up for Best Picture? It's gonna do better than the last few broadcasts.
They should give out the Academy Awards as the Super Bowl halftime show.
― Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 22 January 2019 21:16 (seven years ago)
I said "if it is," ftr, but I also believe that people are probably kidding themselves if they think Black Panther is going to bring the show back to Titanic ratings.

From filmexperience.net Oscar trivia post:
We believe but we don't yet have the clarification that Marina de Tavira is now the ONLY performer ever in the modern era to receive an Oscar nomination without a single notice from critics awards or precursors of any kind. Not a single one. And remember there are 40+ now. There were far fewer precursor awards in 2000 when Marcia Gay Harden stormed toward the Oscar for Pollock out of the blue significant precursor attention but she did have a smidgeon of precursor support. She was a Spirit nominee and she won one major prize: The NYFCC for Supporting Actress.

Marina de Tavira nom might be an indicator of how many people have been watching Roma on Netflix just in the last month or so.

Absolutely no one likes how long the broadcast is. Putting a firm cap on it (3 hours) and doing only two montages (memoriam and + rando) would probably have more people stay tuned in. Or do they make it so long for commercial dollars?
― Yerac, Wednesday, 23 January 2019 01:15 (seven years ago)
it's because they love themselves so much I think
― Dan S, Wednesday, 23 January 2019 01:20 (seven years ago)
No, even the attendees usually talk about how much they hate how long it is.
― Yerac, Wednesday, 23 January 2019 01:22 (seven years ago)
I was (kind of) joking, I definitely would be stressed out spending 3+ hours in front of cameras
― Dan S, Wednesday, 23 January 2019 01:28 (seven years ago)
as a viewer I've never minded the length of it, for people on the west coast it doesn't run so late that we have to worry about getting up for work the next day
― Dan S, Wednesday, 23 January 2019 01:29 (seven years ago)
ok looking it up I'm surprised to see on wikipedia that it's run closer to 4 hours than 3 hours the last six years in a row
― Dan S, Wednesday, 23 January 2019 01:57 (seven years ago)
I hold the opposing view that people don't care about the results as much as they care how entertaining the broadcast is. People obv. remember the results more than the presenter but if there's no one to host the show that's going to make you laugh, or possibly make you laugh, then no one will care enough to watch with much enthusiasm. Watching Chris Rock presenting in the year of *oscars so white* was a treat, for example.
― Acting Crazy (Instrumental) (jed_), Wednesday, 23 January 2019 02:22 (seven years ago)
Also, people talk about how it's too long but the fact that it's too long is the point of it. If it was actually too long then they could just press-release the results. It would make for terrible oscar parties though.
― Acting Crazy (Instrumental) (jed_), Wednesday, 23 January 2019 02:26 (seven years ago)
The fact that it's too long is what gives it the little cultural currency that it has. If it lasts two hours and doesn't have a host then it is truly fucked.
― Acting Crazy (Instrumental) (jed_), Wednesday, 23 January 2019 02:31 (seven years ago)
I agree, yet I still hold the 2001 telecast with Steve Martin as host was the most fleet of foot.
― Your sweetie-pie-coo-coo I love ya (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 23 January 2019 02:32 (seven years ago)
Steve Martin was the best. I loved his opening line: "800m people around the world are watching us, and they're all thinking the same thing: we're all gay"
