I wonder whether RBG will be at the ceremony and get a standing ovation.

adam the (abanana), Tuesday, 22 January 2019 17:10 (five years ago) link

have there ever been two nominees in the directing category for foreign language films in a given year?

Oscar nominee Ready Player One

No arguments in my corner.

1976 had Ingmar Bergman for Face to Face and Lina Wertmuller for Seven Beauties. I think that's the only precedent, though.

jaymc, Tuesday, 22 January 2019 17:21 (five years ago) link

that's the one I was going to post; it's the only one

1976 also had two women in foreign films up for Best Actress.

Your sweetie-pie-coo-coo I love ya (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 22 January 2019 17:22 (five years ago) link

I would be fine with this member-refreshed directors' branch just doing the nominations for every category tbh.

More a reflection of legitimately having no alternatives from stateside product in that era.

flappy bird, Tuesday, 22 January 2019 17:44 (five years ago) link

is it that bad?

that article jaymc linked above about Richter and Donnersmarck is fascinating! The ending of The Lives of Others was a little too sentimental for me, and I was disappointed to see that his film Never Look Away was on the foreign language nominees list and not Burning, but now I’m interested in seeing this film.

If Eric’s list is the real best picture nominees: looooooool

sans lep (sic), Tuesday, 22 January 2019 18:48 (five years ago) link

Stunned that this is the first time Spike Lee has been nominated for Best Director, but tbf there are only a few of his movies that could've plausibly been nominated: DTRT, Malcolm X, 25th Hour. the rest either sucked, too out there for the Academy (Bamboozled), or flopped (He Got Game). He's surely gotten a Best Doc nom though right?

as producer of 4 Little Girls, yes xp

I believe the Katrina docs were both made for HBO.

People are sharing this about on Twitter, i've no recollection of it at all. It must've been cut from the tv coverage in the UK, they did a next-day highlights package on the BBC in the 80s, until the early 90s when Sky began showing it live.

Which means, these days, they would've been eligible.

forrest drumpf (Eric H.), Tuesday, 22 January 2019 20:04 (five years ago) link

No, didn't they change the rules again after the O.J. debacle?

no Wiseman again is of course a disgrace, but they gave him an honorary last year.

a Mets fan who gave up on everything in the mid '80s (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 22 January 2019 20:08 (five years ago) link

Just looked at the list. Mild rooting interest in Bale--no feelings about anybody else. They should give some kind of an award for the "It's Too Late to Turn Back Now" scene in BlacKkKlansman.

If it is, ABC backs out of their contract with the Academy the very next day.

forrest drumpf (Eric H.), Tuesday, 22 January 2019 21:13 (five years ago) link

Based on how the ratings have been trending, yes.

you guys aware that two blockbusters are up for Best Picture? It's gonna do better than the last few broadcasts.

Your sweetie-pie-coo-coo I love ya (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 22 January 2019 21:15 (five years ago) link

They should give out the Academy Awards as the Super Bowl halftime show.

I said "if it is," ftr, but I also believe that people are probably kidding themselves if they think Black Panther is going to bring the show back to Titanic ratings.

From filmexperience.net Oscar trivia post:

We believe but we don't yet have the clarification that Marina de Tavira is now the ONLY performer ever in the modern era to receive an Oscar nomination without a single notice from critics awards or precursors of any kind. Not a single one. And remember there are 40+ now. There were far fewer precursor awards in 2000 when Marcia Gay Harden stormed toward the Oscar for Pollock out of the blue significant precursor attention but she did have a smidgeon of precursor support. She was a Spirit nominee and she won one major prize: The NYFCC for Supporting Actress.

Marina de Tavira nom might be an indicator of how many people have been watching Roma on Netflix just in the last month or so.

Chris L, Tuesday, 22 January 2019 22:34 (five years ago) link

I honestly didn't even grok that Black Panther was one of the BP nominees till just now. I pretend it ends around the 75-minute mark. #teamkillmonger

resident hack (Simon H.), Wednesday, 23 January 2019 01:07 (five years ago) link

anyway despite the lack of a director nom I'm putting my $$ on ASIB

resident hack (Simon H.), Wednesday, 23 January 2019 01:15 (five years ago) link

Absolutely no one likes how long the broadcast is. Putting a firm cap on it (3 hours) and doing only two montages (memoriam and + rando) would probably have more people stay tuned in. Or do they make it so long for commercial dollars?

Yerac, Wednesday, 23 January 2019 01:15 (five years ago) link

it's because they love themselves so much I think
