It’s amazing these people were too dumb to realize they were colluding in espionage

Not even amazing. Stupefying. I’m sure don jr et al thought oppo research was oppo research, and of course you’d leverage the presidency for foreign investments

Rudy: I took an oath to the Constitution - which apparently Mueller’s people forgot

I caught the last several minutes of "The Daily" tonight (the Times podcast), which was focused on at least the first day of the Barr hearings. It featured, imo, some pretty intriguing, perhaps even compelling tea leaf reading. The podcast briefly observed the same vibe I got from the hearing, which they likened to an attempt at a reset. New judiciary committee, new, serious, qualified AG nominee. And yet, it noted, one constant remained: Trump and Mueller, which is really the crux hanging over of the whole thing.

Yesterday someone (maybe even Graham?) asked Barr about his previous interactions with the president, including a report that Trump had asked him to join his defense team. Barr recounts the single encounter, which was back in 2017. The current ambassador to Israel, of all people (who Barr had never met), contacted him and asked him if he wanted to join Trump's team, but Barr demurred, saying thanks but no thanks, he's busy with other stuff right now and didn't feel up to jumping into that particular meat grinder (or something to that extent). Still, he agreed to meet with Trump the next day, which he did. Apparently Trump mostly asked about Mueller, and Barr allegedly responded that Mueller was an esteemed prosecutor and straight shooter, and should be treated as such. And again Barr turned down the defense team, and didn't hear anything from Trump again until asked about the AG role.

Which of course raised the question yesterday: why would someone turn down the defense team role, likening it to jumping into a meat grinder, yet agree to the AG role a year later? The podcast emphasized Barr's peerless reputation and career when it asked, rhetorically, why someone would throw that all away in (in so many words) defense of a scumbag president who has done nothing but undermine the rule of law and the reputation of Barr's friends and peers. And the podcast came to the tentative conclusion that he *wouldn't*, positing in the process nearly the opposite, that as a lawyer with a sterling reputation at the late stage of his career, helping to maintain the rule of law in the face of Trump's recklessness/lawlessness is one of the few career tacks that could burnish his reputation even more. It suggested that even if Trump inevitably turned on Barr - and it underscored how so many purportedly serious public servants have wilted and died in Trump's bad vibe aura - Barr would leave the situation better than he walked into it, either as the AG who helped push back against Trump and support the special counsel and his investigation, or the AG who righteously resigned in the face of interference (which would in some ways probably also support the special counsel and his investigation). Barr might pursue a traditional conservative agenda, but the podcast could see no upside to him aiding Trump's crusade against truth and justice.

The podcast ended by emphasizing that at least as Barr portrayed himself, he was absolutely not the type of AG Trump has repeatedly insisted on in the past, and in fact wondered what Trump made of his testimony, which portended the opposite of a Sessions-like toady.

I think this is it: https://www.nytimes.com/2019/01/16/podcasts/the-daily/william-barr-confirmation-hearing.html

Meanwhile, back at the ranch:

A top Department of Housing and Urban Development official is leaving the agency Thursday following disagreements with other members of the Trump administration over housing policy and the White House’s attempt to block disaster-recovery money for Puerto Rico, according to five people with direct knowledge of the situation.

Deputy Secretary Pam Patenaude, second-in-command at the agency helmed by Ben Carson and widely regarded as HUD’s most capable political leader, is said to have grown frustrated by what a former HUD employee described as a “Sisyphean undertaking.”

However, instead of paying the $50,000 that company owner John Gauger was expecting, Cohen handed him “a blue Walmart bag containing between $12,000 and $13,000 in cash and, randomly, a boxing glove that Mr. Cohen said had been worn by a Brazilian mixed-martial-arts fighter,” the Journal reports.

Michael Cohen hired an IT firm to rig online polls in favor of Donald Trump ahead of the 2016 election and instructed the company to create the @WomenForCohen Twitter account to laud how sexually attractive he is

Trump is too busy governing and opening the government to tweet.

Honestly, and maybe this is just anecdotal, but it always seems to me that aside from international travel, whenever he gets bad news/polling or his numbers are down, he stops tweeting as much for a couple of days until it rights itself.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 17 January 2019 14:17 (seven years ago)

The monkeys in his head very nearly typed out something passably clever with that one.

frogbs, Thursday, 17 January 2019 14:20 (seven years ago)

As for the @WSJ article on poll rigging, what I did was at the direction of and for the sole benefit of @realDonaldTrump @POTUS. I truly regret my blind loyalty to a man who doesn’t deserve it.

does anyone remember when we first became aware of Michael Cohen? Was it "Says who?" or the time he hit on his daughter over Twitter

hard to remember a time before awareness of michael cohen was a thing tbh

— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) August 22, 2018

frogbs, Thursday, 17 January 2019 14:33 (seven years ago)

So wait...is Cohen suggesting that Trump also directed him to set up a fake 'Cohen makes me paw myself' twitter account?

A Nugatory Excrescence (Old Lunch), Thursday, 17 January 2019 14:33 (seven years ago)

If I'm reading the story correctly, Trump gives Cohen 50k, Cohen spends 12-13k of it to rig polls, and...keeps the rest? Minus the cost of the boxing glove?

frogbs, Thursday, 17 January 2019 14:40 (seven years ago)

Standard attorney fees iirc.

A Nugatory Excrescence (Old Lunch), Thursday, 17 January 2019 14:43 (seven years ago)

I think the other way around? Cohen spends 12-13K rigging polls, asks Trump for $50K reimbursement, gets it.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 17 January 2019 14:46 (seven years ago)

Yeah, for all his con artistry it seldom occurs to me that Trump is probably super easy to fleece in return.

A Nugatory Excrescence (Old Lunch), Thursday, 17 January 2019 14:47 (seven years ago)

imagine sitting down with someone and saying 'hey i wanna pay you some money to make a twitter account dedicated solely to how hot i am'

like how utterly impervious to shame or embarrassment do you have to be in order to make it all the way through that sentence

I have an equally hard time imagining that anyone could ever accept a job like that without going out of their way to undermine the intent. But I guess that's why I'm not getting Wal-Mart bags full of cash from shady lawyers.

A Nugatory Excrescence (Old Lunch), Thursday, 17 January 2019 15:05 (seven years ago)

I guess that's just marketing in general, making things that hearken the end of human civilization seem palatable, even desirable. Squicks me the fuck out.

A Nugatory Excrescence (Old Lunch), Thursday, 17 January 2019 15:39 (seven years ago)

So in all seriousness, this has been one of the few times Trump has been forced to swallow a poison pill. No matter what he does, he will damage himself.

Gotta say the most likely option is him eventually re-opening the government sans his wall. The shitdown has cost him 2 points in each direction for approval ratings and 538 says it is starting to erode his base some. None of it has to be permanent. His supporters who are going without pay could easily forget their hard feelings later.

But in a few weeks, furloughed workers will count as unemployed and ruin his unemployment stats. His base will hate him if he doesn't get his wall, but the solution has been in front of him the whole time. Re-open the government and tell his idiot lackeys "we are getting the Wall - discussions will continue while the government reopens".

Of course it's bullshit but he'll minimize the damage better than having no wall AND having the longest shutdown in history continuing to hurt the country.

Someone will eventually whisper in his ear that people are less likely to hate him if he ends it now. Nancy has him on the ropes.

fuck the NRA (Neanderthal), Thursday, 17 January 2019 15:41 (seven years ago)

problem is all he watches is FOX News which is constantly reassuring him that he's winning and that Nancy is gonna cave any moment now

frogbs, Thursday, 17 January 2019 15:46 (seven years ago)

xpost OTOH, this could be like the time when he continued stubbornly insisting that the USFL play its games on the same nights as the NFL until the entire league immolated.
