He wants to overturn Roe vs Wade, believes the President should be able to fire any US attorney, all but said that as AG he will redact the Mueller report, and is anti-LGBTQ rights.

I agree these are not reasons that Republicans will vote against him.

sans lep (sic), Tuesday, 15 January 2019 19:19 (seven years ago)

My biggest takeaway from this so far is that both Grassley and Leahy are soooooooooooooooooooooo old.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 15 January 2019 19:20 (seven years ago)

basic GOP shit. He's already done the job, I will be curious who of the Dems would vote against him. He's not an idiot, he actually came off ok during the hearing. I also don't give a shit about career advice to little Jimmy, Ethan, Jayden, Squi, that was driving me crazy.

I think it would be worth the sacrifice/gamble to get this turd in ASAP to get Whitaker out.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 15 January 2019 19:23 (seven years ago)

yeah Barr was always getting in, and having done the job under Poppy he's difficult for Dems to oppose (and it's possible if they held the majority a few of them would defect).

Trump is not going to nominate someone more palatable than Barr.

Oh his answer to jailing journalists is bad. FFS I hope the entire legacy of his career ends up dog food.

Yerac, Tuesday, 15 January 2019 19:40 (seven years ago)

getting barr confirmed in the era of no filibusters is a foregone conclusion, unless the proverbial dead woman or live boy comes to light

Trump can wake up with both and the base will applaud his audacity.

An exchange to watch. Cory Booker confronts William Barr's record on the criminal justice.

Here is a reminder that due process is a constitutional standard that does not apply here which you would think a possible AG would know 🤷🏻‍♀️

Harris gets Barr to say he thinks a wall would help prevent drug trafficking then notes that most drugs trafficked into the US enter through ports of entry

Barr concedes this quietly

It's been about 30 years since he's been to a port of entry he says

So many of the Barr questions (from both sides!) are either literally or implicitly variations on "Trump, his family and his associates are under all sorts of investigations, criminal and otherwise: Federally, privately, in several states. Can you promise to let these play out?" Does not bode well for the 300 pound elephant in the room.

I will say it's sort of refreshing, GOP ass or not, that Barr is not relying on "that's a hypothetical" as a lame dodge. He's generally given reasoned responses, like them or not. For example, on the legalization of cannabis, he flat out said he would prefer it be illegal even while stating he would not undermine what's going on at the state level and going further by saying (more or less) he'd prefer they just go ahead and legalize it on a national level rather than deal with these ad hoc contradictions. He's even responding, right now, on the "indict a sitting president" question, at least to some degree.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 15 January 2019 22:29 (seven years ago)

kinda feel for mueller having to interview all these lying shitbags. between corsi, stone, credico and nunberg and I dont know how you could cut through the bullshit and obfuscation to get the truth of the matter. probably explains why its taking so goddamn long to indict stone.

Speaking of Mueller, some fun details in here

Politico reports:

President Donald Trump is often called thin-skinned. It’s usually not meant literally. But the back of Trump’s right hand was covered with an adhesive bandage during a Thursday trip to McAllen, Texas, with blood visibly seeping through the dressing. His hand was similarly bandaged again on Monday as he departed for a trip to New Orleans.

Armchair medics studying photos that circulated online this week leapt to dramatic conclusions. But the White House said on Tuesday that Trump sustained the injury while playing with his 12-year-old son. “The President was having fun and joking around with his son Barron and scratched his hand,” White House press secretary Sarah Sanders told POLITICO.

Yeah, Pelosi is definitely not asking, she presides over joint sessions of Congress and is telling him outright he can either reschedule for when the government is open, or submit the SOTU in writing.
