regarding polls and blame for the shutdown, still more polled are blaming Trump than Democrats, though Republicans are absurdly bearing little to none of the blame even though it's them refusing to buck the Prez as well. Even one of my best friends yesterday thought this was more a R v D battle until I set him straight.

but 538 says the long-term damage from these things amongst voters is minimal, so I doubt this would swing an election one way or another. I'm glad at least we don't have midterms going on. House Dems need to keep turning the screws, though I feel incredibly guilty that it's on the backs of so many employees.

Trump not having a wall by 2020, that might move a few more voters, though his base will probably just be more encouraged to vote for him cos "without him,, there's 0% chance at a wall!"

fuck the NRA (Neanderthal), Thursday, 10 January 2019 17:07 (seven years ago)

xpost Yeah no one even remembers the previous two - two! - Trump shutdowns.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 10 January 2019 17:07 (seven years ago)

the last one was billed as Dem shutdown

well, he did say in his December meeting that he would accept responsibility

sadly, I really do think this thing could go on for six months and it would end up having little to no effect on 2020 since that's so far out and so much other shit will happen between say July of this year and November of next.

Evans on Hammond (evol j), Thursday, 10 January 2019 17:16 (seven years ago)

and i don't see it ending any other way besides a) Trump declaring a national emergency or b) the Democrats extracting significant concessions in exchange for wall funding. and I can't make up my mind if b) is a good idea, politically (of course, it very well may still be a total nonstarter to the immigration restrictionists like Miller just like it was last year).

Evans on Hammond (evol j), Thursday, 10 January 2019 17:18 (seven years ago)

it will be out of the news, certainly, but i don't think the federal workers now going unpaid are going to forget

mookieproof, Thursday, 10 January 2019 17:20 (seven years ago)

I'm kind of immune to worry as by now, there have been all kinds of worries that Trump will just do illegal things and dare Congress to sort it out, and while it's happened here and there the major ones, he's always blinked, mostly cos his bluff keeps getting called in the press.

He doesn't have an Addington to help him.

fuck the NRA (Neanderthal), Thursday, 10 January 2019 17:21 (seven years ago)

without "lock her up" and "build a wall" i wonder what the new shitty chant they will come up with in 2020

(•̪●) (carne asada), Thursday, 10 January 2019 17:22 (seven years ago)

the same?

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 10 January 2019 17:22 (seven years ago)

Dems should really try to get a DACA-for-Wall deal, if only to see it being first accepted, then shut down once Trump watches some more Tucker.

Frederik B, Thursday, 10 January 2019 17:24 (seven years ago)

we'll build a Wall if Trump resigns

White House lawyers are prepping the legal justification for a national emergency declaration. This has included advising aides to ramp up "crisis" talk. Lawyers suggest the more times they say it, the more often they can point to it in a legal defense filing, per @Kevinliptakcnn

— Kaitlan Collins (@kaitlancollins) January 10, 2019

seems like this, too, might also make it into a filing https://t.co/qgM4Famkli

trump basically is the GOP these days so its splitting hairs, imo. at least the public doesn't see a difference.

What the fresh hell. This is REAL. Filmed in 1958- about a conman who grifts a small town of suckers into building a wall. History not subtle enough for you? GUESS THE GRIFTER'S NAME

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 10 January 2019 17:55 (seven years ago)

Narrator: The people were ready to believe. Like sheep they ran to the slaughterhouse. And waiting for them was the high priest of fraud.

Trump: I am the only one. Trust me. I can build a wall around your homes that nothing will penetrate.

Townperson: What do we do? How can we save ourselves?

Trump: You ask how do you build that wall. You ask, and I’m here to tell you.

why don't they make the whole wall out of blackbox

flappy bird, Thursday, 10 January 2019 18:44 (seven years ago)

yeah that plus the unearthed clip of Trump telling people not to let walls stop them and the fact that nearly everything he says is directly contradicted by an old tweet of his, its weird

there's a good chance we're living in a Twilight World-style simulation where Trump has to live out all his old tweets from 2010-2014 and that there are people obsessively studying them right now in order to divine the future

Sen Collins tells me that the deal in the works for a bipartisan immigration deal to end the shutdown is now all but dead... shutdown continues

— Robert Costa (@costareports) January 10, 2019

“It’s run into some difficulties,” Sen Collins says grimly of the side discussion led by Graham and involving Kushner, blaming both Pres Trump and Speaker Pelosi for refusing to “budge” from their positions

hey, can everyone on this thread make some homemade chocolate chip cookies and bring them to me? preferably one delivery a day, 10-20 cookies so I can share them with people at work? I expect everyone else to coordinate with each other to figure out the schedule. I'll also need someone to act as the point person for me on this because i am very busy.

...WHY WON'T YOU ALL BUDGE ON THIS???

thinking a lot about that Chris Hayes quote "if your parents started speaking like Trump does you'd think about putting them in a home"

frogbs, Thursday, 10 January 2019 20:42 (seven years ago)

There are few venues outside of the presidency wherein the Trump of today at his Trumpiest wouldn't be fired/evicted/arrested/committed/generally shunned by society. Which is, y'know, kind of fucked up.
