There are many things to watch.

Peep show is at the top of any list of things to eat g. Wish i could watch it for the first time again..
― flopson, Thursday, 10 January 2019 17:57 (seven years ago)
All very well but this is the thread for The Favourite, a film by Yorgos Lanthimos.
― Acting Crazy (Instrumental) (jed_), Thursday, 10 January 2019 18:10 (seven years ago)
rumor has it they share a performer
― a Mets fan who gave up on everything in the mid '80s (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 10 January 2019 18:13 (seven years ago)
jed, have you watched Peep Show?
― flopson, Thursday, 10 January 2019 18:44 (seven years ago)

what makes the Required Viewing list is rather easy to predict around here

I haven't! I don't think I like David Mitchell. He's annoying on panel shows.
― Acting Crazy (Instrumental) (jed_), Thursday, 10 January 2019 19:17 (seven years ago)
you should watch it. shame about having that baggage going into it, but it’s the best sitcom of the 21st c imho
― flopson, Thursday, 10 January 2019 19:37 (seven years ago)
I can't fucking stand the sight of either of 'em on panel shows or in peep shows, nauseating tossers!

Finally saw this, reminded me of a more commercially-minded Peter Greenaway. Also was that crazed organ music on the soundtrack Messiaen? Olivia Colman was fantastic, she's shaping up to be this generation's Judi Dench if that's not an absurd assertion (I realise it probably is).

Huh just watched this an hour ago too, really liked it. It's nice just to have a movie with three female leads. Certainly my pick of the Best Picture nominees (though yet to see Green Book)
― Vinnie, Saturday, 2 March 2019 11:42 (seven years ago)
Funny seeing Olivia turn up as a secretary in Green Wing last night which was presumably from before she had made a name for herself.
― Stevolende, Saturday, 2 March 2019 12:11 (seven years ago)
Or at least, had it on the tv for the first time in ages. Have the box set from shortly after it was on tv for first time.& while she is a recurring character she is a lesser part of an ensemble cast. Or something to that effect.
― Stevolende, Saturday, 2 March 2019 12:15 (seven years ago)
Peep Show was already airing when it debuted
― Number None, Saturday, 2 March 2019 14:24 (seven years ago)
Was Mitchell and Webb Look post Peep Show?
― Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 2 March 2019 14:57 (seven years ago)
yes
― Number None, Saturday, 2 March 2019 14:59 (seven years ago)
she appeared in a few other sketch shows with them prior to Peep Show though
― Number None, Saturday, 2 March 2019 15:00 (seven years ago)
her work on Peep Show is god-tier
― bhad bundy (Simon H.), Saturday, 2 March 2019 15:23 (seven years ago)
Colman met Mitchell & Webb when all were 18-19 yrs old at the Cambridge U. Footlights (1992-93).

This was what I was hoping Phantom Thread would be, the difference being that I actually wanted to hang around these characters. Loved the economy of the screenwriting within the lavish setting.

That’s kind of an enigmatic take
― moose; squirrel (silby), Saturday, 2 March 2019 19:12 (seven years ago)
Finally saw this last night. It was ok, but overall it was underwhelming compared to Lanthimos' other films. I did like the lens choices, and belly-laughed at the dancing in the grand ball scene.

"That’s kind of an enigmatic take"

Eazy, you wanted to hang around... vermin?
― a Mets fan who gave up on everything in the mid '80s (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 13 March 2019 19:28 (seven years ago)
Saw it the other day. I hated the other Lanthimos movie I saw (The Lobster), but liked this quite a bit. It reminded me of Barry Lyndon a little.

natural light, period piece
comparison falls down bcz The Favourite is not so boring that you ossify to death halfway through
― steven, soda jerk (sic), Wednesday, 13 March 2019 20:20 (seven years ago)
Well, tbf that's where comparisons to any Kubrick film fall apart.

xp Well, were it not for Olivia Colman's natural charisma, it would've gone 0-for-10 there.

Just viewed. I was enchanted until the last 5 minutes, and really wish this could have stuck the landing.
The Draughtman's Contract (likely Lanthimo's major inspiration) is a better film (though the available video transfers from 16mm aren't), but this will remain in rotation.

Really? I thought the ending was perfect! They both realized they were trapped, but were in their own separate versions of reality. After all of the harshness of the preceding story I thought it was kind of moving
― Dan S, Thursday, 14 March 2019 06:33 (seven years ago)
this was okay, mostly just reminded me that every 10 years or so everyone in the industry appears to develop an insatiable need for an artsy royals/costume drama to enthuse over
