aimless's read on negotiation clicks with me. this is his only idea of how to deal with opposition, and we would have been seeing countless versions of this same story for the past two years if the dems had one house of congress to block him with.

for all their smug preening in recent years, the GOP couldn't even manage to stop a clown that they hated from getting their nomination, and have spent 2 years living in fear of the guy. Dems don't seem to mind defying their party as much

Cant remember Dem congress defying an Obama veto tbh

https://www.cnn.com/2019/01/09/politics/immigration-deal-wall-fight-republican-senators/index.html

After Trump stormed out of a White House meeting with congressional leaders, GOP senators privately gathered in Sen. Lindsey Graham's office Wednesday to discuss a way out of the logjam. The long-shot idea: propose an immigration deal that would include $5.7 billion for Trump's border wall along with several provisions that could entice Democrats.

Those items include changes to help those who are a part of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program as well as immigrants from El Salvador and other countries impacted by the Temporary Protected Status program - along with modifications to H-2B visas.

Lol this woulda worked a year ago, nice try

right, but the vote was 97-1 in the Senate, and Schumer publicly criticized the White House after the vote.

fuck the NRA (Neanderthal), Thursday, 10 January 2019 04:19 (seven years ago)

the funniest thing about the "shutdown may go on for years" threats is that somehow border security is a national crisis and everybody's lives are at stake if we don't act immediately, but hey, if we get it done 3 years from now, nbd

fuck the NRA (Neanderthal), Thursday, 10 January 2019 04:26 (seven years ago)

trump's aggregate approval has decreased by 0.2 points (42.5 to 42.3) since the start of the shutdown

https://dyn.realclearpolitics.com/epolls/other/president_trump_job_approval-6179.html

Karl Malone, Thursday, 10 January 2019 04:30 (seven years ago)

tbf the pollsters haven't been real active due to recent holidays, and one of the three listed is Rasmussen, who you might as well subtract 7 points from. Gallup hasn't posted a new weekly one since before Christmas.

That said, his approval rating has barely moved in the last year or so. it seems 40-42% is just where he's going to sit. the passing of the tax reform seems to have given him a permanent 3-4 point bump.

I hope he dies of dysentery.

fuck the NRA (Neanderthal), Thursday, 10 January 2019 04:40 (seven years ago)

one of the three listed is Rasmussen, who you might as well subtract 7 points from

that's a very good point

but yeah, i don't know. i know his rating doesn't move. he's just in an insane period of lows recently, just the dumbest piece of shit of all time falling on his face every single day. it's odd to see that it has no effect, but i suppose it's the same old song - republicans love him, everyone else hates him, very few people are in between.

Karl Malone, Thursday, 10 January 2019 04:44 (seven years ago)

There's a lag time between cause and effect too, people changing their opinion on something often takes months even years. On the one hand it seems baffling that there might be people out there who were pro-Trump right up until now and then decided oh now this really is too much I don't like him now, but on the other hand the cumulative effect takes a long time to really take effect

I'd say if this is the case his approval rating still has potential to drop some but not necessarily in response to anything in particular

anvil, Thursday, 10 January 2019 05:10 (seven years ago)

The remaining 60% of us are gonna have a helluva mess on our hands if he opts for a Jonestown-style resolution to his presidency.

Love is Scarface (Old Lunch), Thursday, 10 January 2019 05:15 (seven years ago)

There's a lag time between cause and effect too, people changing their opinion on something often takes months even years.

i can see this and i hope it's true (because it gives me hope that some of his supporters might eventually realized they fucked up), but in this case there's just this really loud dumb guy shitting his pants on the stoop every evening, and he reliably sets his car alarm off by accident every night at 4 am and it takes him 2 minutes to turn it off.

Karl Malone, Thursday, 10 January 2019 05:17 (seven years ago)

could someone remind Shakey that the two major parties still... STILL... agree on a number of things

Shahid Shafi, a trauma surgeon in Fort Worth, said precinct Chairwoman Dorrie O'Brien is petitioning to have the Tarrant County Republican Party “reconsider” his appointment, The Washington Post reported Wednesday.

O’Brien has, without evidence, publicly accused Shafi of promoting Sharia law and being affiliated with terrorist groups.

She has written on Facebook that Shafi is a “fake Republican” who might have joined the party at the request of the Muslim Brotherhood to infiltrate the organization, the Post reported.

one thing about the 40% is that they're essentially Flat Earthers now, no amount of evidence of gonna dissuade them, especially as they still get their sweet liberal tears day in and day out. Trump appeals to them because, despite being the highest-ranked government official, he's still one of *them* - a dumb as shit reactionary who cannot be bothered to learn anything that could possibly change his mind. he's living the life they all dream of.

I looked at that Facebook thread and it is just as fucking grim as you'd expect.

I predict we'll see GOP-ers increasingly grasping at straws to explain why their party is collapsing around them. Why not infiltration by the Muslim Brotherhood?

Poor guy. The reporter that is.

I asked Trump, who said he is prepared to declare a national emergency, when this emergency/crisis began.
"Oh, it began a long time -- ask President Obama," Trump said.
I then pointed out that he has been President for 2 years.
His response: "Look, look, you can all play cute."

I don't know who to believe about Tableslamgate but I hope the media devotes the bulk of their resources to ferreting out the truth of what is clearly the most important aspect of the interchange in question. Only then can we turn our focus to the precise variety of candy on offer at the meeting.
