I enjoyed this but it wasnt amazing or anything. Not as good as Dogtooth or The Lobster but much better than Sacred Deer (which I hated)
The dialogue could have been a bit sharper though. It leaned a bit too heavily on actors in aristocratic clothing saying "cunt" for comic effect

I don't remember Colman in The Lobster... or Hot Fuzz. That's the only other stuff i've seen her in.

(no, I don't watch contemporary Brit TV comedy, how much time do you think I have?)

Queen Anne was a sympathetic character.

Look Around You was brilliant. Colman is a national treasure.
It leaned a bit too heavily on actors in aristocratic clothing saying "cunt" for comic effect
yeah I thought the lines were well written and delivered perfectly but the novelty of 'cunt' wore off v quickly*
*that's a clause I never thought I'd write

she's in a lot of contemporary Brit TV drama too
― sans lep (sic), Wednesday, 9 January 2019 19:45 (seven years ago)
one key scene, for me, was the incredibly amusing dance routine (i liked the various anachronistic touches) and then the shift to Queen Anne's face while that was happening. at first i was like "i want to see more of those moves! show me them!" but gradually you realise that you're watching something far more interesting - the change in Coleman's expression - that's the point at which your sympathy for her character is created. that's an acting masterclass right there.
i love this film more than any new film i've seen for a long time.
the thing i loved most were the candle-lit scenes. those were truly stunning.

Yet to see it, but reading descriptions I want a parody with Coleman & Stone uttering "Now we know. Now we know." in unison...

i gen avoid starting on TV shows. I couldn't even get through Twin Peaks s3, and I liked it.

I haven't! I don't think I like David Mitchell. He's annoying on panel shows.
― Acting Crazy (Instrumental) (jed_), Thursday, 10 January 2019 19:17 (seven years ago)
you should watch it. shame about having that baggage going into it, but it’s the best sitcom of the 21st c imho

I can't fucking stand the sight of either of 'em on panel shows or in peep shows, nauseating tossers!

Finally saw this, reminded me of a more commercially-minded Peter Greenaway. Also was that crazed organ music on the soundtrack Messiaen? Olivia Colman was fantastic, she's shaping up to be this generation's Judi Dench if that's not an absurd assertion (I realise it probably is).

Huh just watched this an hour ago too, really liked it. It's nice just to have a movie with three female leads. Certainly my pick of the Best Picture nominees (though yet to see Green Book)
― Vinnie, Saturday, 2 March 2019 11:42 (seven years ago)
Funny seeing Olivia turn up as a secretary in Green Wing last night which was presumably from before she had made a name for herself.
― Stevolende, Saturday, 2 March 2019 12:11 (seven years ago)
Or at least, had it on the tv for the first time in ages. Have the box set from shortly after it was on tv for first time.& while she is a recurring character she is a lesser part of an ensemble cast. Or something to that effect.
― Stevolende, Saturday, 2 March 2019 12:15 (seven years ago)
Peep Show was already airing when it debuted

This was what I was hoping Phantom Thread would be, the difference being that I actually wanted to hang around these characters. Loved the economy of the screenwriting within the lavish setting.
