administration officials who had seen a draft copy of his speech said the president was not preparing to do so.

thanks goodness he's predictable and can be counted on to stick to his original thinking

is he gonna be alone in the room w/ the techs, tho? reading the 'Prompter?

if he did, someone would declare him "presidential"

flappy it's because these are the same networks that spent the last 2 years soul searching about how to better cover a demagogue who spreads blatant falsehoods and racist propaganda every time he speaks yet still are willing to give him unlimited airtime to do so because apparently the "fake news" thing cuts deep for them

frogbs, Tuesday, 8 January 2019 18:26 (seven years ago)

not to mention the fact that Obama requested the same thing in '14 and was rejected because they didn't wanna come off as "politically biased"

he's finally going to address the tough questions about the border raised by Sicario: Day of the Soldado

omar little, Tuesday, 8 January 2019 18:28 (seven years ago)

according to that article the WH has asked for eight minutes of airtime, which tbh isn't that much -- especially for a guy known to ramble off on bizarre tangents. wonder if any of the networks have plans to cut him off if he runs long/gets weird

mookieproof, Tuesday, 8 January 2019 18:28 (seven years ago)

Whats the point of this if he isnt declaring an emergency? Just more ranting about democrats?

Trϵϵship, Tuesday, 8 January 2019 18:28 (seven years ago)

woke up from a nightmare the other night that after declaring a state of emergency, he instituted a draft to force people to serve six-month terms on the border building the wall.

soaring skrrrtpeggios (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 8 January 2019 18:29 (seven years ago)

the only small saving grace here is that, after two years plus of this shit, nobody is likely to take anything he says TOO seriously, up to and including a declaration of war against mexico as it will be made instantly and abundantly clear that he has not vetted whatever half baked decisions he presents with anyone who would then be obliged to enact his dumbfuck pronouncements

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Tuesday, 8 January 2019 18:29 (seven years ago)

yeah. I was gonna say that a lack of preparation gives zero indication of whether he'll do something.

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Tuesday, 8 January 2019 18:39 (seven years ago)

Prediction: he will deliver his address, which he will think is the smartest, best address ever, totally persuasive. No one will be persuaded, the dems will rip it to shreds in the next breath, he will lose his shit and declare an emergency (or intimate as much) some time after, maybe overnight, or maybe tomorrow morning, most likely by tweet. Then rather than talk about his stupid speech, everyone will start asking "wait, did he declare an emergency? Can he do that? Here's legal expert Bullshit McCory to address those and other legal concerns. But first, how about those Golden Globes?"

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 8 January 2019 18:41 (seven years ago)

just to be clear: the state of emergency he may or may not declare is that...people are trying to enter the country?

gbx, Tuesday, 8 January 2019 18:43 (seven years ago)

Emergency TBD

I thought POTUS had carte blanche when it came to Oval Office addresses? 8 minute address is pretty standard and not blanketing the airwaves for 30-60 minutes (obviously that would be insane). of course he's going to lie. this is new for presidents?

I'm looking forward to it bc it's going to be a complete disaster if he's using the traditional format as Morbs suggested - I can see the camera dollying in on him sitting at the desk, sticking to the script for a bit, then going off like a maniac. it's going to be SO dumb. I have very little regard for the intelligence of the American people but I'm with Nate Silver, give them some credit... this isn't the beginnings of some fascist takeover. it's an Oval Office address.

flappy bird, Tuesday, 8 January 2019 18:45 (seven years ago)

just to be clear: the state of emergency he may or may not declare is that...people are trying to enter the country?

that's the thing. the real crisis is one of his own making - the asylum crisis, the family separation, children dying in government shelters of poor condition not intended to house children, etc.

but he conflates all of that with illegal border crossings/ illegal immigration, a number which has been on the DECLINE for years. he just refers to all of that as the same thing and calls it a "crisis", which is as confusing as hell because everyone is thinking of a different crisis. i doubt he will distinguish between the two tonight, either. he never does.

🚨 NEW: Paul Manafort's attorneys failed to properly redact their filing. They reveal that Mueller alleges Manafort "lied about sharing polling data with Mr. Kilimnik related to the 2016 presidential campaign". Konstantin Kilimnik has alleged ties to Russian intelligence. 🚨

— Jon Swaine (@jonswaine) January 8, 2019

Manafort attorneys also accidentally reveal via failed redaction that Mueller says Manafort was in contact with "a third-party asking permission to use Mr. Manafort’s name as an introduction in the event the third-party met the President."

In new court filing, attorneys for Paul Manafort seem to confirm he was in contact with members of the Trump administration after they took office. They deny Mueller's allegations of wide-ranging lying. pic.twitter.com/2y0GeOPlvZ

I thought POTUS had carte blanche when it came to Oval Office addresses?

US broadcast TV networks are for-profit private businesses who refused the brown POTUS the exact same thing.

Has anyone posted about how this speech being a smokescreen for something big going down? Are their rumblings of any knew filings or subpeonas (subpeonae)?

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Tuesday, 8 January 2019 19:00 (seven years ago)

I'm a paralegal and I've done my share of redactions for federal court filings and this is a flagrantly bad fuck up. Makes me wonder if Manafort's law firm dgaf anymore and did this on purpose.

Didn't know that about O in 2014. I stand corrected. What, was The Bachelor on that night?

flappy bird, Tuesday, 8 January 2019 19:03 (seven years ago)

Due to a redaction error, we learn today that: 1) Paul Manafort and Konstantin Kilimnik, who has been tied to Russian intelligence, met in Madrid during the campaign. 2) Manafort shared polling data with Kilimnik. 3) They discussed a "Ukrainian peace plan."

of course he's going to lie. this is new for presidents?

I don't think any US president in history has been as divorced from reality as Trump. it's not uncommon for them to mislead or cherry pick bad stats but it's another to claim they've apprehended 4000 terrorists at the border, especially when the real number is 0

the real frustration about this is that the news media has spent countless hours on opinion pieces speculating how to better cover a person who lies about literally everything but have not yet figured out that they can just not put him on TV

frogbs, Tuesday, 8 January 2019 19:23 (seven years ago)

Frogbs otm. Best thing would be to air it with an hour delay, to allow fact checkers to point out the most blatant lies. Or better: to bleep out the lies.
