Republican Kansas Sen. Pat Roberts will announce his retirement at a press conference in Kansas Friday afternoon, two sources close with Roberts told The Daily Caller News Foundation. Roberts, 84, will make the announcement around 11:15 E.T. in his home state. Roberts, who has served in the Senate since 1997, will announce his retirement after months of speculation.

So...Kansas has a newly elected Democratic governor (Laura Kelly), but she doesn't take office until January 14. Is Roberts retiring immediately, thus allowing the current Republican governor to appoint someone to fill the vacancy? (Unlike Arizona, Kansas doesn't require that the appointed senator be from the same political party as the departing senator.)

Oh, never mind, probably just retiring at the end of his current term, which ends in 2020.
