He got through it the first time by not commenting, then it came around again and he did this

The “Louis CK masturbated in front of women” story came around as a barely-blind item from Jen Kirkman like a year before he actually took the fall for it, is all I mean.

Louis CK live was the best standup I’ve ever seen in my life. He’s a POS because he cornered women and masturbated in front of them. Both of these things are true. I’m not gonna do that revisionist social media bandwagon jumping thing. I don’t really care that he “made fun of the Parkland survivors”.

Your first three sentences are true and valid (and I agree with all of them - I saw him live a few years ago and laughed harder than I've ever laughed in my life). Your last two sentences make you sound like a gaping asshole.

grawlix (unperson), Tuesday, 1 January 2019 02:52 (five years ago) link

I mean I guess I need to hear the actual joke in context? But he “made fun of the holocaust” more than once I’m pretty sure and it was funny.

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Tuesday, 1 January 2019 02:56 (five years ago) link

The context isn’t the context of the joke the context is him.

I have measured out my life in coffee shop loyalty cards (silby), Tuesday, 1 January 2019 03:04 (five years ago) link

Like nobody’s trying to say they retroactively didn’t find him funny or moving in the past, he could be telling good jokes (he isn’t; he’s telling hacky transphobic jokes) and it still wouldn’t be funny because he is an unrepentant sex criminal.

Like what is “revisionist bandwagon jumping” about saying that Louis CK doing mean-spirited sets in 2018 is noxious

I have measured out my life in coffee shop loyalty cards (silby), Tuesday, 1 January 2019 03:07 (five years ago) link

Yeah I can get on board with that sentiment. I just meant more the stuff that’s like “actually he was always an unfunny white man using his privilege to be edgy.”

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Tuesday, 1 January 2019 03:07 (five years ago) link

like in this thread? Or just out in the world? Some people probably never found him funny either. It’s not a science.

Whiney made the argument upthread that his new material is nearly identical to his old material. Also misunderstood my post about context becuz as silby notes the context is HIM

I never thought he was funny, he always seemed gross and sad to me. I don't use social media. You're welcome.

brimstead, Tuesday, 1 January 2019 04:24 (five years ago) link

Wait crap ilx is social media. Oh well!!!!!!

brimstead, Tuesday, 1 January 2019 04:24 (five years ago) link

Louie was a big pot of soup and the soup was delicious and then he put his dick in the soup and now it is no longer edible

@ whatever tweet upthread that commented that “he’s rich, go away, why is it so hard” espouses a specifically American idea of prioritizing capital worth over human worth

Anyway I wish he hadn’t made those shitty Parkland comments, bye dude, the soup was delicious once

pretty much sums it up

Squeaky Fromage (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 1 January 2019 04:46 (five years ago) link

Is there a German word for 'I acknowledge that you've done awful + gross shit which has dissuaded me from paying you serious attention from here on out but I still think you had some worthwhile perspectives in the past and I feel conflicted about this schism between present and past'? I just think back to like that episode where his neighbors are all insistent about helping him out when his pregnant sister is ailing, or I think about the Gordon Gartrell shirt, and I think about the positive feelings I associate with those moments and I'm all like...why? Why did you have to taint and complicate this? Why? Life is weird.

Maybe he should run for president

StanM, Tuesday, 1 January 2019 09:12 (five years ago) link

There's probably a 100% overlap between people who will go and see a comedian in the full knowledge that he's a sexual abuser and people who will lap up a basic anti-snowflake routine. He's pretty transparently playing up to the one remaining constituency that still likes him.

His act is exactly the fucking same! It’s not some 3D chess play to pivot to maga Twitter, it’s just callousness and/or obliviousness

ebro the letter (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 1 January 2019 13:27 (five years ago) link

keep thinking about how louis ck has broken the cardinal rule of predators and openly revealed in the most obvious way that the nice guy act will be exchanged for outright hostility the moment it stops serving their ability to find victims

i missed the progressive hero louis period so i'm not sure what that was built on, apart from asking people to vote for hillary, but i don't see a huge difference between this leaked set and what he was doing ten years ago as he was moving from club headliner to theaters off basically this caliber of standup and o&a appearances where right before and right after he divorced his wife he went full mra. i don't think he's suddenly because of bitterness at being caught jerking off in front of people swung wildly to the right. he was never above shocking dead baby cunt bits. he was always like this or was like this for most of the past ten years—i did miss the progressive louis period whenever that was like i said—and this is just him fucking around at governors long island not being shot for a special after a year of working it out. there's not some reactionary louder with crowder demographic that's going to pick this up because louis has always been supported by those people, the o&a subreddit, men that go to comedy clubs and hate their bitch wife, free speech guys, people that explain to you how the world used to be better because you could call black guys the n-word but everyone got along without all this racial tension and here's a clip of louis and patrice to prove it.

sucks to see him dragged by school shooting survivors and weiners like andy richter, but he brought it on himself.

XxxxxxxXxxxxxxxxXxxxx (dylannn), Tuesday, 1 January 2019 13:40 (five years ago) link

it actually doesn’t suck to see him dragged by those people considering

Clay, Tuesday, 1 January 2019 16:17 (five years ago) link

He always had those “shock” jokes and they were always in the context of something more complex and humanistic and some of them always fell flat or went too far. It’s kind of moot now that he’s also outed as a gross sexual predator, but yes, I do think there is something to the way twitter just takes those moments and magnified them out of context, and also something very prudish about callout culture, almost like a bunch of elementary school kids oohing at bad words. Like yeah I do think comedians should have some leeway to say stuff that winds up being offensive and going too far because they are doing a lot of material and trying a lot of stuff and doing a lot of shows over a career and sometimes something is going to go too far or land wrong. I mean how much psychic harm is actually done by those moments. I have cringed at jokes that offended me but that cringe at a joke from someone otherwise not trying to be hateful or terrorize anyone is not the comedy equivalent of painting a swastika on a synagogue door, ya know?

I think kinda lot of 'psychic harm' is being done by yelling at school-shooting survivors...

Frederik B, Tuesday, 1 January 2019 19:05 (five years ago) link

Now that there is creepy behavior connected to the jokes about being a creep, it makes the “racist” jokes sound racist, and so on.

I listened to the two LCK rutines on the N-word and the F-word today, and they're really not the same as the new stuff. I disagree with what he says, but both rutines are filled with empathy and consideration of the people he is talking about. Also, the thing that I can't forget about Louis CK and offensive stuff is that early episode of 'Louie' where he's playing poker with his comedian friends, and Rick Crom gets to tell them how the use of the F-word impacts him. For a couple of years there was a willingness to grow, and to listen to other people, but I think it went out the window earlier.

Frederik B, Tuesday, 1 January 2019 22:45 (five years ago) link

yeah the "oh he was always trash" stuff is lazy/wishful thinking. the decline is more depressing because his best material demonstrated real consideration and reflection (particularly in the middle seasons of Louie)

this rather presumes to dictate that we should have found any of that stuff funny or that we cared that it was """"caring""""

topical mlady (darraghmac), Tuesday, 1 January 2019 23:13 (five years ago) link

A big part of the Parkland that I think is being underdiscussed is the fact that those kids have legitimately been psychotically demonized by large factions of the right and right wing media. It’s inevitable that doing jokes at their expense is going to make you look like you’re in league with the Laura Ingrahams and Mark Levins of the world and I don’t feel the least bit sorry for Louis if he’s not sufficiently plugged in to realize that.

Also what is the point of making fun of traumatized children

ebro the letter (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 1 January 2019 23:23 (five years ago) link

louis' early stuff about his kids was boss-level comedy imo. his later "right on" stuff about his kids, about how they shouldn't have so much sugar and salt and they shouldn't watch so much tv, was fuckin hacky. but there was a year or two where he was p much unquestionably 'funniest man in america' a la chris rock a decade or so earlier, a la dave chappelle, etc. - i mean chacun a son gout but this is fairly uncontroversial

that early episode of 'Louie' where he's playing poker with his comedian friends, and Rick Crom gets to tell them how the use of the F-word impacts him.

The whole show was him giving voice to his antagonists and subjects in a way that his standup wouldn't allow. That really is a source of its strengths, from the Dane Cook scene to the Network Chairman scene. Maybe I Love You, Daddy did something similar.

And I do think often how his harassment took place before the show happened, and how the show did seem to be a kind of therapy.

Which doesn't matter much now, in large part because he doubled down on not owning up to his past behavior when he had a chance. Now it's just dick soup, and who wants that.

if you didn't like his stuff to begin with, i suppose this is the right thread to do the "i told you so's" for the rest of his life. it's ok if you didn't!
but i really loved those first two seasons of Louie, and i'm not surprised there are others in this thread who felt similarly. the dumb provocative stuff was outweighed by the thoughtful and sensitive, for sure. that bully episode was particularly great. never got around to watching any more and probably never will now
