The context isn’t the context of the joke the context is him.

Like nobody’s trying to say they retroactively didn’t find him funny or moving in the past, he could be telling good jokes (he isn’t; he’s telling hacky transphobic jokes) and it still wouldn’t be funny because he is an unrepentant sex criminal.

He always had those “shock” jokes and they were always in the context of something more complex and humanistic and some of them always fell flat or went too far. It’s kind of moot now that he’s also outed as a gross sexual predator, but yes, I do think there is something to the way twitter just takes those moments and magnified them out of context, and also something very prudish about callout culture, almost like a bunch of elementary school kids oohing at bad words. Like yeah I do think comedians should have some leeway to say stuff that winds up being offensive and going too far because they are doing a lot of material and trying a lot of stuff and doing a lot of shows over a career and sometimes something is going to go too far or land wrong. I mean how much psychic harm is actually done by those moments. I have cringed at jokes that offended me but that cringe at a joke from someone otherwise not trying to be hateful or terrorize anyone is not the comedy equivalent of painting a swastika on a synagogue door, ya know?
