That was comical in the extreme. Lost their heads. I must admit I find it hard to care - but let's hope this 20/20 doesn't set the tone for the summer the way the one in 2005 against the Aussies did.

GamalielRatsey, Friday, 5 June 2009 20:11 (seventeen years ago)

yay! i guess. but since this was so close, i guess "we" sucked as hard as the English, except there are only 6000 people playing this sport here anyway. (we probably threw around some passports for anyone who was interested in playing for us)

Ludo, Friday, 5 June 2009 20:26 (seventeen years ago)

Lot of pressure on the Dutch at the end there and they didn't crack, so completely deserved winners I reckon.

GamalielRatsey, Friday, 5 June 2009 20:36 (seventeen years ago)

I think there may be a few saffas on the Dutch side, but I hope there's plenty of focus on how well Holland played, despite how woeful England were, they were ace.

problem chimp (Porkpie), Friday, 5 June 2009 20:40 (seventeen years ago)

Absolutely, the win was utterly deserved. England middle order poor, english fielding dreadful, but the Dutch played really, really well.

RIP English Cricket, heaven needed another 5-0 Ashes whitewash

"too worldly to compete on /b/" (King Boy Pato), Friday, 5 June 2009 23:59 (seventeen years ago)

reporting to you from dutch media, players trying to remain in their underdog role "we were lucky" but also dreaming of the final! ("that's my birthday!")

Ludo, Saturday, 6 June 2009 07:18 (seventeen years ago)

Eng-er-land lost to....the Dutch??? Bwaahahahahahahahahhahahahahaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!!!!!!!

S Wine Floozie (SeekAltRoute), Saturday, 6 June 2009 08:50 (seventeen years ago)

I heard it was because of Holland's "Total Cricket" strategy...

snoball, Saturday, 6 June 2009 10:00 (seventeen years ago)

7 overs a side is farcical, no? Still, decent total by Scotland.

dada wouldn't buy me a bauhaus (aldo), Saturday, 6 June 2009 12:02 (seventeen years ago)

Yes, it's nonsense, I remember some friends going to a Twenty20 a couple of years ago which was rained into a five over per side match. But it gives a good chance for the underdogs to cause, well, not exactly an upset, because it's almost like flipping a coin, but put the cat amongst the pigeons a bit.

GamalielRatsey, Saturday, 6 June 2009 12:04 (seventeen years ago)

English cricket - bringing the lulz since 1882.

Gordon Brown Reason to Live (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 6 June 2009 12:06 (seventeen years ago)

i watched about an hour of the game in the pub yesterday while playing pool and actually found it fairly exciting. How queer.

all-time A+ lulz almighty

the England guy that throws the balls (country matters), Saturday, 6 June 2009 15:37 (seventeen years ago)

Anyway, you can argue that Australia just got even more comprehensively mullered by a non-team. Cricket = beautiful.

4.1

Lee to Gayle, SIX, One mighty wallop! He cleared the front hit and thwacked it high and over midwicket. Into the school beyond the boundary. What a whack that was.

4.2

Lee to Gayle, no run, yorker around the off stump, dug out to the off side

4.3

Lee to Gayle, SIX, Oh boy what a violent six this was .. Immense fun ... It was the slower one but he picked it up early, waited for it, cleared the front foot and killed it over long-on. Hope the school kids are not wandering around the stadium. It crashed into the roof .. what a big big hit ....

4.4

Lee to Gayle, no run, he moves towards off, comes back into position to dig out a yorker to the off side

4.5

Lee to Gayle, (no ball) FOUR, Violence refuses to abate at The Oval. Gayle is wreaking havoc. Lee, from round the stumps this time, serves one full delivery outside off and Gayle crashes it over covers in his inimitable style. What's more, it's a free hit too

4.5

Lee to Gayle, FOUR, That has almost decapitated Fletcher. It was full and outside off, Gayle murdered it past the startled Fletcher who dived to the ground. Blink. The ball is picked up from the long-off boundary. Lee is bleeding here. What can he do to stop this man?

4.6

Lee to Gayle, SIX, As it turns out, he can do nothing but watch Gayle dismiss him everywhere around the ground. It was a short delivery, Gayle opened up his stance, kept his front foot outside leg and smashed it high into the midwicket stands. The white ball is flying all over.

Chris Gayle: wasn't lying about Twenty20

the England guy that throws the balls (country matters), Saturday, 6 June 2009 17:37 (seventeen years ago)

TBF It takes a team with fierce drive and a legendary work ethic to overcome Australia.

A brutal shot. Sky stats showed it travelled off the bat at over 90mph. Not bad when the ball was travelling around that speed before it hit the willow. Could never work the maths but that's some force at work.

whatever, Saturday, 6 June 2009 20:02 (seventeen years ago)

just watched the highlights gayle omg

Jarlrmai, Saturday, 6 June 2009 22:55 (seventeen years ago)

England with 3 changes from Friday's team. KP back in (and therefore out again very quickly with a duck). Mask-her-anus and Swann in for Morgan and Sidebottom.

Pakistan have a 79% win ratio in international T20, England 37%. No pressure then....

shah a complete liability

whatever, Sunday, 7 June 2009 17:14 (seventeen years ago)

whatever, Sunday, 7 June 2009 18:43 (seventeen years ago)

this is crunch time, afridi can win it all on his own or england get him out cheap. But they gotta get him quickly.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 7 June 2009 19:10 (seventeen years ago)

aww man how did that not go to a fielder, afridi escapes

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 7 June 2009 19:11 (seventeen years ago)

and again

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 7 June 2009 19:11 (seventeen years ago)

not wanting to tempt fate (england fan, goes with the territory) but this is looking quite good...

whatever, Sunday, 7 June 2009 19:13 (seventeen years ago)

mind you at this run rate it would need to be one of the best innings of all time
xpost

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 7 June 2009 19:14 (seventeen years ago)

the Holland vs Pakistan game might be a cracker if the Dutch can play as well as they did against England.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 7 June 2009 19:16 (seventeen years ago)

england have obliged in the past...

whatever, Sunday, 7 June 2009 19:16 (seventeen years ago)

AFRIDI OUT!

afridi "been swinging like a rusty gate"

whatever, Sunday, 7 June 2009 19:17 (seventeen years ago)

he really did look out of form though, im shocked by that innings

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 7 June 2009 19:17 (seventeen years ago)

agreed. his bowling had me worried though, good variation, seemed to pin england back.

i think pakistan assumed they would beat netherlands hence the two young players in their team. if i weren't english i'd be pissed off with their selection and play

whatever, Sunday, 7 June 2009 19:21 (seventeen years ago)

england got the selection wrong against the dutch too.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 7 June 2009 19:23 (seventeen years ago)

argh now bopara drops a dolly

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 7 June 2009 19:23 (seventeen years ago)

shocking

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 7 June 2009 19:23 (seventeen years ago)

But i think it's safe to say that no-one in this group is going to win the cup.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 7 June 2009 19:24 (seventeen years ago)
