bring back stands

gabbnebulous (darraghmac), Tuesday, 18 December 2018 21:49 (five years ago) link

amused that in some circles Solskjaer is seen as a less risible possibility than Bruce or Hughes

I Accept the Word of Santa (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 18 December 2018 22:09 (five years ago) link

aye, Hughes would let the sunshine in again alright

Number None, Tuesday, 18 December 2018 22:12 (five years ago) link

i can barely remember if Solksjaer has a managerial style. i'm obv not saying Hughes or Bruce are remotely likely, but it's not like their managerial chops are any more questionable than Solskjaer's

I Accept the Word of Santa (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 18 December 2018 22:14 (five years ago) link

yeah but they're both cunts

Number None, Tuesday, 18 December 2018 22:16 (five years ago) link

I'm not turning cartwheels about this appointment but I would have been happy enough with Carrick and McKenna til the end of the season tbh (considering it's almost a total write-off at this point). Getting in a dour PL journeyman would be a horrible move. At least this is somewhat left field. I mean, fuck it

Number None, Tuesday, 18 December 2018 22:20 (five years ago) link

nah i agree with all that, i was just listening to former professionals laughing at the notion of Bruce/Hughes (obviously correctly) but then getting all up in Solskjaer's rear

I Accept the Word of Santa (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 18 December 2018 22:22 (five years ago) link

at least Carrick/McKenna would have some logic of potential continuity to it, this is like a post-shark jump sitcom bringing in a very special guest who turns out to be not so very special

I Accept the Word of Santa (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 18 December 2018 22:23 (five years ago) link

baby faced shark jumping do do do do do do

Hey Manchester United, I’m available

I presume the thinking here is that it would essentially be impossible for the Utd fans to turn on wee Ole

let's find out

Number None, Tuesday, 18 December 2018 22:25 (five years ago) link

yeah i agree with nv. i think there's a hint of politics about this - real pragmatism would have been carrick who is already working there. this feels like hunting some cheap soft power.

xpost that's definitely it, which to me coming from woodward and co seems cynical.

FernandoHierro, Tuesday, 18 December 2018 22:26 (five years ago) link

trying to think of any united players that went on to become decent managers, help me out here

my name is leee john, for we are many (NickB), Tuesday, 18 December 2018 22:28 (five years ago) link

Phil Neville seems to be doing ok

I Accept the Word of Santa (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 18 December 2018 22:30 (five years ago) link

George Graham won some titles.

Tim, Tuesday, 18 December 2018 22:32 (five years ago) link

Blanc is definitely the most successful to have played under Fergie, although he barely counts

Number None, Tuesday, 18 December 2018 22:35 (five years ago) link

oh, good shouts! robson had a couple of great seasons at boro i guess but a bit iffy after that

my name is leee john, for we are many (NickB), Tuesday, 18 December 2018 22:37 (five years ago) link

Robson one of the worst managers in my lifetime at that level

I Accept the Word of Santa (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 18 December 2018 22:38 (five years ago) link

Mind you I didn't much care for him as a player so

I Accept the Word of Santa (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 18 December 2018 22:39 (five years ago) link

apart from his highlights: winning the Skol Skol Bloodaxe league a couple of times years ago and being much more useless than Warnock at Cardiff, Solksjaer seems like another ex-player stealing a living to me. I wouldn't fucking wish him on Bradford City tbh!

calzino, Tuesday, 18 December 2018 22:40 (five years ago) link

ended up in an ex-man u player google hole but... is it just me who had never heard this?

not ruling out h/t oranges with a cup of tea though!

calzino, Wednesday, 19 December 2018 09:47 (five years ago) link

I know Twitter is not the best barometer but the United fans appear to be absolutely lapping this shit up

groovypanda, Wednesday, 19 December 2018 10:28 (five years ago) link

might as well put on brave face on when everyone is laughing at you. God, some of those entitled dickheads on 5live yesterday talking all that Utd way bollox yesterday reminded why I fucking despise this club.

calzino, Wednesday, 19 December 2018 10:36 (five years ago) link

in a way hating the whole club makes you the truest manchester united fan of all

ogmor, Wednesday, 19 December 2018 10:48 (five years ago) link

that's could almost be a grave insult, but obv contains some truth as well! But don't forget fans of every other club in the football league don't have quite have that preternatural desire to see pretty football and see their club winning games like utd fans do. Because that's the Utd way.

calzino, Wednesday, 19 December 2018 10:54 (five years ago) link

Do Burnley fans want to see pretty football?

It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christ (Tom D.), Wednesday, 19 December 2018 10:56 (five years ago) link

not since the Stan Ternent days when they signed Gazza!

calzino, Wednesday, 19 December 2018 10:57 (five years ago) link

i think wanting to watch decent football is completely fair, not wanting to watch Moyesball or Mouball is more than fair

I Accept the Word of Santa (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 19 December 2018 10:57 (five years ago) link

that's the united way when they're losing but if mou had them one nilling their way to a title nobody would give a shit. it's not as if there were never seasons like that under fergie.

god knows i have PTSD from a lot of our pre-Nuno years

I Accept the Word of Santa (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 19 December 2018 10:58 (five years ago) link

Some of my favourite promotion campaigns in the 90's/00's were built on formless kick 'n' rush football and outright thuggery. But I'm not calling that the HTAFC way!

calzino, Wednesday, 19 December 2018 11:01 (five years ago) link

Half the clubs in the league claim some spurious "way" that they're currently not adhering to. Commentators are always shiteing on about the "tradition of attacking football" demanded by fans of West Ham, Newcastle, etc

Number None, Wednesday, 19 December 2018 11:09 (five years ago) link

true

calzino, Wednesday, 19 December 2018 11:11 (five years ago) link

in this sense, Burnley remain truest to their way

I Accept the Word of Santa (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 19 December 2018 11:13 (five years ago) link

yeah once the club starts talking about their way you know things are really fucking shit

FernandoHierro, Wednesday, 19 December 2018 11:17 (five years ago) link

it makes me think about the Crewe Way + how they used to be held up as the platonic ideal of a lower league club. Then that myth crumbled to pieces when it turns out they had a long-standing culture of institutional child abuse and even the revered Dario Gradi was using club staff to delete dodgy material off his PC.

calzino, Wednesday, 19 December 2018 12:24 (five years ago) link

omg

the charlton way fyi is to panic whenever winning

imago, Wednesday, 19 December 2018 12:30 (five years ago) link

calz do you have fond memories of the time lou macari brought the united way to huddersfield?

my name is leee john, for we are many (NickB), Wednesday, 19 December 2018 12:32 (five years ago) link

he got us to the playoffs, but the football was woeful. 11 behind the ball at home to relegation threatened Notts Co in a 2-2 draw was a great memory! But some ppl remembered him quite fondly because the fuckwit that followed him (Mick Wadsworth) was comfortably our worst post-war manager and took us down to L2.

calzino, Wednesday, 19 December 2018 12:45 (five years ago) link

lot's of players hated him. I seem to recall a West Ham player accusing him of finishing off his career because he had him jogging on concrete after he wasn't recovered from an injury. But tbf he seems to do expend a lot of his energy helping the homeless in Stoke these days, so he's obv not a total monster.

calzino, Wednesday, 19 December 2018 12:52 (five years ago) link

maybe that's a path that jose could follow to redeem himself

my name is leee john, for we are many (NickB), Wednesday, 19 December 2018 13:23 (five years ago) link

There's probably never been a better time for English football fans to enjoy good, exciting, attacking, technical football that also wins games, certainly compared to the Mourinho imperial phase. You shouldn't have to choose these days.
