isn't the absence of the Aretha doc Amazing Grace an upset? even given their fickle whims?

a Mets fan who gave up on everything in the mid '80s (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 18 December 2018 12:34 (seven years ago)

hoping the Coup make it in if only for the performance

no Mandy or Hereditary in the score shortlist is criminal

resident hack (Simon H.), Tuesday, 18 December 2018 13:27 (seven years ago)

no best doc nomination for They Shall Not Grow Old ?
that is insane.

Hmmmmm (jamiesummerz), Tuesday, 18 December 2018 13:58 (seven years ago)

That is one of the stronger fields of Foreign Language Films in a long time. Cold War, Burning, Roma and Shoplifters should all be nominated, hope The Guilty can get the final one.

Frederik B, Tuesday, 18 December 2018 14:38 (seven years ago)

wait was Transit not Germany's submission? madness.

resident hack (Simon H.), Tuesday, 18 December 2018 14:41 (seven years ago)

of course they were powerless to resist Teen Choice Awards nominee Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck

resident hack (Simon H.), Tuesday, 18 December 2018 14:44 (seven years ago)

Transit didn't really have a chance for a nomination, though?

Frederik B, Tuesday, 18 December 2018 16:00 (seven years ago)

Technically Poland should have nominated 'Mug' and Mexico should have nominated 'Museo', but... That's not how it works.

Frederik B, Tuesday, 18 December 2018 16:04 (seven years ago)

Petzold was a previous submission for "Barbara" so it's not really an out-there choice

resident hack (Simon H.), Tuesday, 18 December 2018 16:05 (seven years ago)

anyway none of this matters because it's Roma fever all the time forever for some goddamn reason

resident hack (Simon H.), Tuesday, 18 December 2018 16:09 (seven years ago)

Maybe Transit isn’t eligible until next year?

I Never Promised You A Hose Harden (Eric H.), Tuesday, 18 December 2018 16:09 (seven years ago)

They submitted him before for a more populist work, and it didn't get nominated. While von Donnersmarck has won before. I get their reasoning, and it seems to have worked. Petzold will have to console himself with having made a freaking great film.

Also, Roman wins Best Film, Cold War wins Best Foreign Language?

Frederik B, Tuesday, 18 December 2018 16:11 (seven years ago)

Nah, I'm sure it's still A Star is Born and Cuaron wins Best Director and Foreign Language.

Your sweetie-pie-coo-coo I love ya (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 18 December 2018 16:16 (seven years ago)

Yeah, the combination of Green Book and Vice underwhelming + the likelihood of Bohemian Rhapsody being in the BP line-up making A Star is Born look better in comparison = that dumb movie winning, marking the worst BP since, what, The Artist?

I Never Promised You A Hose Harden (Eric H.), Tuesday, 18 December 2018 16:21 (seven years ago)

Birdman, surely. It can't possibly be worse than Birdman?

Frederik B, Tuesday, 18 December 2018 16:27 (seven years ago)

Vice isn't playing widely yet -- the embargo lifted yesterday -- and it's just getting notices, so don't discount its box office. I forget that The Big Short made over a $100 million.

ASIB >>>>>>> The Artist >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Birdman

Your sweetie-pie-coo-coo I love ya (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 18 December 2018 16:29 (seven years ago)

I can imagine GDT's evangelism getting Roma all the way tbh

resident hack (Simon H.), Tuesday, 18 December 2018 17:01 (seven years ago)

i think "worst winner since The Shape of Water" is damning enough

a Mets fan who gave up on everything in the mid '80s (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 18 December 2018 17:09 (seven years ago)

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Crash

rip van wanko, Tuesday, 18 December 2018 17:15 (seven years ago)

Yeah, what was I thinking. The Artist, Argo, Birdman, The Shape of Water and The King's Speech are all equally as awful as A Star is Born. Which, to be clear, is awful.

I Never Promised You A Hose Harden (Eric H.), Tuesday, 18 December 2018 17:46 (seven years ago)

They just gave it to a good movie so they've filled their quota for the decade

resident hack (Simon H.), Tuesday, 18 December 2018 17:48 (seven years ago)

Moonlight is a once-ever-25-years kind of thing.

I Never Promised You A Hose Harden (Eric H.), Tuesday, 18 December 2018 17:49 (seven years ago)

The King's Speech and A Star is Born are C movies, mundanities. We have to be like Minos in Inferno, wrapping our tails around our bodies judging which circle in hell to cast these movies.

Your sweetie-pie-coo-coo I love ya (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 18 December 2018 17:53 (seven years ago)

Argo wasn't terribly offensive, by virtue of not trying to be terribly important, unlike most of the rest of those

rip van wanko, Tuesday, 18 December 2018 18:08 (seven years ago)

the shape of water was good. burn the rest

flappy bird, Tuesday, 18 December 2018 18:30 (seven years ago)

Argo made the CIA heroic and Ben Affleck into a Serious Director. That's important.

Your sweetie-pie-coo-coo I love ya (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 18 December 2018 18:40 (seven years ago)

yeah i bet the hostages loved that shit

Jimmy Carter was all "lol, that didnt happen"

a Mets fan who gave up on everything in the mid '80s (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 18 December 2018 18:48 (seven years ago)

what 1969-relevant elders can they get to present Best Picture? Hoffman and Voight are kinda pariahs... Redford and Katharine Ross?

a Mets fan who gave up on everything in the mid '80s (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 18 December 2018 18:51 (seven years ago)

Birdman soundtrack was smoking.

Argo is by far the worst of the movies in that list you are crazy

akm, Tuesday, 18 December 2018 18:59 (seven years ago)

does Nicholson still go out? haven't seen him since that last Jim Brooks movie.

a Mets fan who gave up on everything in the mid '80s (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 18 December 2018 19:00 (seven years ago)

He was gonna be in the Toni Erdmann remake.

bros before HOOS (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 18 December 2018 22:08 (seven years ago)

There were only 3 maybe 4 non-franchise hits this whole year. You better believe the Oscars are going to try to jam as many as possible in the top category.

I Never Promised You A Hose Harden (Eric H.), Tuesday, 18 December 2018 22:16 (seven years ago)

Bohemian and Crazy Rich Asians could complete their transformation into the People's Choice Awards.

a Mets fan who gave up on everything in the mid '80s (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 19 December 2018 03:37 (seven years ago)

Or undo their transformation into the Indie Spirit Awards.

so is the problem what green book reveals about certain americans or what it does to them? if the former, well it's not like we didn't know any of this. if the latter, my sense is that films play a teeny tiny if any causal role in actually perpetuating any of this stuff.

― affects breves telnet (Gummy Gummy)

the latter, and my sense is different! i think we are affected by the perspectives we are exposed to, more than we like to acknowledge.

the scientology of mountains (rushomancy), Wednesday, 27 February 2019 01:19 (seven years ago)

Remember next year is going to be all about CATS, which will win 15 Oscars at the minimum.

Uh, wrong thread!

clemenza, Wednesday, 27 February 2019 15:25 (seven years ago)

no, i think that's a good all-purpose post.

affects breves telnet (Gummy Gummy), Wednesday, 27 February 2019 23:15 (seven years ago)

five years pass...

I said upthread I would probably never see Green Book; visiting a friend tonight with two middle-school-aged boys, so it was "Sure, okay." Didn't think much of it; I posted about Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's defense of the film above, which I liked, but it really did seem 40 years out of date. I don't blame the actors, who did their best.

clemenza, Tuesday, 11 February 2025 04:15 (one year ago)

(60 years out of date--In the Heat of the Night had many more moments capable of surprising you.)
