lol the MMA stuff is the most interesting/best-executed part, it's the political angle that's suspect (I also do not care about MMA)

agree with simon here & i even legitimately dislike MMA

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Tuesday, 11 December 2018 22:11 (seven years ago)

the MMA doc is pretty good, i learned quite a bit. i'm sympathetic to biederman's thesis that it allowed for something legitimately strange and unarguably direct in a time when life got ever more managerial, duplicitous and unforgiving. but that seems to be *his* point of attachment to the sport.

i was a little disappointed he didn't at least take on the idea that it provided a spectacle of masculine violence in a time that has been, little by little, more feminized. i mean that just seems obvious, and a clear link to its trumpiness.

I remember him talking about fighting and bringing up that point in an interview shortly after the 2016 election, I forget the podcast name but the logo was a cassette tape. pretty sure Matt went on earlier as well.

They need more group movie viewing and right-wing novel reading series eps.

Can’t decide which thread to put this in so here goes:

“Let Me Make You Famous”: How Hollywood Invented Ben Shapiro
With the shaping of producer Jeremy Boreing, Brand Shapiro has made owning the libs a lucrative business, and the Daily Wire a rising power in conservative media. But can they survive Trump?

TINA NGUYEN
DECEMBER 9, 2018 5:30 PM

...Before Shapiro, Boreing was a fairly obscure Hollywood figure, perhaps best known for helping to produce Etienne!, a buddy movie about a dying dwarf hamster. His primary political affiliation was as the managing director of Friends of Abe, a quasi-secretive salon of conservative entertainment-industry professionals, which he had taken over from Forrest Gump actor Gary Sinise. Years earlier, Andrew Breitbart, a celebrity in his own right within Friends of Abe, had introduced him to Shapiro, and they became fast friends, both serving time at Truth Revolt, a now-defunct Web site, started as the right’s answer to David Brock’s Media Matters, which churned out reliable content attacking the mainstream media and their secret funders. Truth Revolt placated its ancient donors at the David Horowitz Freedom Center, a nonprofit condemned by the Southern Poverty Law Center, but it was far too earnest, and barely made a ripple.

So Q has never given out disinformation before? If JFKJr was in fact alive, how would Sun Tzu answer the question "is JFKJr alive?" Would he say 'yes' or would he say 'no'? How do you think Sun Tzu would answer the question Jeremy? Would he show his hand or would he hide it?

I did listen to that episode and it wasn't bad. Mostly Simon talking.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Monday, 17 December 2018 20:48 (seven years ago)

I'm as suspicious of liberal identity politics as the next leftist grouch but I've never really seen what people see in "exiting the vampire castle" which doesn't really engage with pro-identity politics voices, just lots of ad hom from a trad marxist about the "petit-bourgeois", "post-structuralist", "moralizing", "mccarthyite", "'left'" throughout and, on the other hand: praise of Russell Brand.

( ͡☉ ͜ʖ ͡☉) (jim in vancouver), Monday, 17 December 2018 21:05 (seven years ago)

i think it was just an early critique of idpol from the left and therefore seems somewhat prescient for ppl sympathetic to critiques of liberal identity politics today but i never felt like beyond its historical significance it was the definitive take on the topic - and also his personal narrative lends sympathy vis-a-vis the blowback he got for the article, etc and how that relates to the contemporary debate.

Mordy, Monday, 17 December 2018 21:09 (seven years ago)

good point.

does give me "there is nothing new under the sun" vibes when i think about the traditional class focused marxist vs eurocommunist culturalist discourse in the CPGB in the 70s.

Amazing that the Patreon continues to grow given how little of a shit they seem to give about the show.

louise ck (milo z), Monday, 17 December 2018 23:54 (seven years ago)

vampire castle is aight but mark fisher's empathy and insight had a big impact on my life and i hate seeing his work reduced to a cudgel in twitter slapfights over cum town or whatever

oiocha, Tuesday, 18 December 2018 03:43 (seven years ago)

it’s one of his stickier works but far from Fisher’s most interesting writing. ppl want to tear down the academy, but lives next door to the academy

catching up here, I haven’t checked out the mma doc but am interested and we should do a thread. a little less than a decade ago I’d done a fair bit of mma watching and my friend’s bf was working in the video editing trailer for ufc, going around the world but stuck in a metal box in the parking lot cutting up clips for promos. lots of weird shit and opinions on Dana White and the money

mh, Tuesday, 18 December 2018 04:07 (seven years ago)

the SNL episode felt like listening to some people read our SNL thread aloud

I would pay like a good dollar for a monthly guide to the best of that month's Street Fight. it's just too much damn pod

I get so many Patreon emails from Street Fight, I don't even read the episode descriptions anymore.
