I don’t know anything about this but saw the manga for sale today and the title looked familiar from SNA. Is it worth getting or is this more a film kinda thing?

xxp iirc the manga differs from the series not insignificantly & ik some people who hate it-- recently saw it described roughly as "eva if the nerds w a shallow, unfeeling understanding of it & its characters were correct"-- but i can't offer up an opinion myself. prob safe not to get it

for context altho the first vols of the manga came out before the series, the latter & eva as a concept was conceived originally by hideaki anno, & the manga, written by someone else, is basically an alternate version

Don't read the manga before you've seen the show

Just in case they fuck up the dub you should try and find the series now and watch it. unless you're going subs anyway. I just have a sentimental attachment to the original English cast, and tbh they all held up nicely when I rewatched the series earlier this year.

only go for subs, the early episodes of the old dub are extremely rocky

the manga is written by the series' character designer after the show was finished; it's as much of an embellishment on the original story as the rebuild movies. mostly for ppl who are already fans

i nearly owned every volume of the manga and read it to the end. it's fine, wasn't exactly worth it lol

according to early reports: apparently streaming rights for "fly me to the moon" must be incredibly expensive

and since my cats woke me up, i watched a few scenes of the new dub. cast is completely different but misato and shinji are weirdly sorta similar-sounding to allison jaffe and spike spencer (their old adv dub actors). old anime dub fans (and power rangers fans) will recognize johnny yong bosch in the cast as touji

checked and, both sub and dub changed "love" to "like" in ep 24. ok

Not seen it on Netflix yet but not having 'Fly Me to the Moon' during the closing credits is kind of sad. New folk won't know what they're missing I suppose.

pfft i actually recommend getting through the first half as quickly as possible

i mean i love those episodes (barring "a human work" which is good character-building for misato but kinda obviously the least good episode in every other way) but the show is special for the shift halfway through

some of those translations sound wack. otoh I wonder if OG fans whine too much. everyone who's like "no Fly Me To The Moon? it's ruined!!" like...calm down, we live in a society

eva fans (and western anime fans in general) have been professional whiners since the ‘90s

I'm now honestly wondering if Netflix standards and practices deliberately toned down the adultness of that specific dialogue when they noticed how young the characters were supposed to be

cf. there were a lot of sailor moon fans who wanted the early ‘90s dic dub preserved when viz started the massive rerelease/retranslation/redubbing a few years ago and this is basically an unreasonable position

tbc "Fly Me to the Moon" is critical + one of the best parts of the show

Maybe I'll queue up the Youtube ending compilation in another window and flip to it at the end of each episode, like a normal person.
