Matt Binder has done some pretty good episodes on Pro Wrestling and left politics on his Doomed! podcast--recently one about the WWE and Saudi Arabia

Yeah I find the MMA history interesting but I’m not sure I buy the larger socio-political framework they’re going for. Should piss off lots of MMA fans though!

i kind of admire eve for just being a character in a j.franzen novel come to life, even her name seems like the sort of thing hed come up with when wryly creating an oberlin grad with a degree in self-care that writes explainers about millennial culture for "new media"

holy water????
― (° . ° )― (Lamp), Monday, 3 December 2018 16:39 (five years ago) link
Holy water has also been believed to ward off or act as a weapon against mythical evil creatures, such as vampires. In eastern Europe, one might sprinkle holy water onto the corpse of a suspected vampire in order to destroy it or render it inert.[38][39] Thereafter, the concept proliferated into fiction about such creatures.

Anyone else have thoughts on the MMA project? I feel like I must be missing something (having watched one MMA event in my life I probably am) but the writing seems really repetitive - how often does he have to repeat some variation of “weird men with bad tattoos”? And I guess the conclusion works in a symbolic “fight the inevitable unbeatable descent into shit” sort of way but I can’t help think about the effects on that guy’s brain from going out and getting pummeled for another 5 minutes.
― JoeStork, Monday, 3 December 2018 20:42 (five years ago) link
We discussed it a little upthread. I think some of the details are interesting but I don't think it coheres.

yeah like as a history of MMA i was pretty fascinated by it but the shifts into doomy cultural commentary prognostication with some bad taste writing & low-rent visualizations made me feel like i was watching loose change 2 or something

I think Natalie Shure does a good job in this short thread of getting at why it's so bad and annoying
For better or worse, a lot of people have friends whose ideologies diverge from theirs. But navel-gazing about it in the newspaper of record - without ever grappling with the impact your media pal’s writing may have on people’s actual lives - serves an insidious political purpose https://t.co/3W7xBWzMKq— Natalie Shure (@nataliesurely) December 3, 2018

also weiss concedes not an inch in her support for the right while peyser spends a bunch of time grumbling about her alleged ideological compatriots

― louise ck (milo z), Monday, 3 December 2018 22:19 (five years ago) link
Xxxp yeah the historical stuff was often fascinating, I just didn’t see any criticism of it except commenters yelling about politics getting in their MMA.
I’ve only listened to a few CTH episodes but the one from a few months back with Felix going on an extended rant about the glory of the Krassenstein Bros was pretty amazing. Made it a little tougher to adjust to Serious Voice though.

Does the MMA doc have much actual fight footage in it? Because it sounds like the perfect excuse for someone like me who enjoys watching good fight footage but doesn't actually follow the sport.

it could be that there is value in having [and encouraging] friendly relationships w/ ppl you feel political hostility towards and it's not just navel-gazing.
