speaking as someone who was assigned male at birth and has for the last several years been taking drugs to turn herself into an old lesbian, it's not really an "aesthetic" per se

first off there's not nearly as much difference between the physical appearance of "men" and "women" as a lot of people seem to think. this lack of difference is, i'd argue, a large part of _why_ clothing is so aggressively gendered. for a lot of people it is Very Important to know upon first looking at someone what their gender is.

since the culture we exist in now is patriarchal, the way this manifests itself is that male is an _unmarked_ gender, and female is a _marked_ gender - maleness is not something that is "performed", per se, just a sort of default state of being. pre-transition i can't say i ever went to a lot of effort to "perform masculinity". i mean, i smelled bad and had a receding hairline. that's about it.

lesbians are often taken to be "butch", to do male gender performance, and absolutely there are plenty of lesbians who do that, but for me, lesbianism is more a matter of _not doing gender performance for the benefit of straight men_. the last thing i want to do is look like a man, but i _don't_ dress femme most of the time.

"old" is certainly a factor as well - when cis women go through menopause they stop making as much estrogen, which i can tell you firsthand makes a pretty big difference in how a person looks. a woman who's not taking hormone replacement therapy (which was, of course, invented for cis women) is going to look more... _androgynous_, let's say.

basically what makes an old man look like an old lesbian is not being bald. that's pretty much it.

anyway, i'm going to continue to use this thread as my own personal version of Her. swiping right on Stone Gossard (shit, they had me when they started calling themselves _Stone_, yummmm), left on Jimmy, Paul, and Joe. (i'm assuming stone would be ENM given how prominent their ring is in their PFP. i'd still want to meet their nesting partner.)

i should also add that photographs are also fairly poor at representing perhaps the two most important ways we gender people - height and voice. take the picture of taylor swift and paul mccartney - she has her arm around his shoulder and they're the same height (5'11"). it's pretty easy to look at that picture and see them as a lesbian couple. would we see it the same way if taylor swift was 5'2"?

height is more like women's clothing sizes - there's what you might call a high standard deviation within any particular number.

one of the great things about being a lesbian is that you can look like taylor swift or paul mccartney or any of the kids in the hall or, well, anybody you like. and these days, instead of saying "she looks like a man!" they'll instead say, without any particular malice against _you_, that anyone who resembles you looks like a lesbian. i think that's pretty awesome.
