The actress who plays Eleanor's mom first played the role in the flashbacks to Eleanor's childhood. So that's why she's so young. I think.

she talks about it in an interview (it’s the woman who played mary cherry on POPULAR)You play Kristen Bell’s mother on The Good Place, and you return for Thursday’s episode. How did that role first come about, and did you discuss the age difference?I (first) got a call from my agent, “You got an offer to play Kristen Bell’s mother.” I was like, “Well, here it is. Here’s that phone call where you are officially an older actress.” Then she said, “No, no, wait. It’s to play the mother of her character in flashback.” Initially, it started off as playing the mother of a little girl. I thought, “Okay, that makes more sense,” because Kristen Bell and I are not that far apart in age. Look, don’t get it twisted. I know I’m older than her, but I’m not old enough to be her mother. Then when they said, “We’d like you to come back and work with Kristen,” there was a conversation, “Well, how is that going to work?” Like, “What are you going to look like?” They were like, “We don’t want to do aging makeup on you. That’s not something we want to do.” They came up with a brilliant idea to just Real Housewives her and to make her look really pulled and surgeried. We put in extensions. We gave me a really insane tan. Pulled my face up with tape. Wore really crazy makeup, really intense, Real Housewives-ish makeup.https://www.vulture.com/2018/11/leslie-grossman-ahs-apocalypse-the-good-place.html

another terrible thing about our cursed age
― maura, Friday, 9 November 2018 01:54 (seven years ago)
they didn't really appear to do that to her though. she looked exactly the same as she does on American Horror Story.

The homage to LOST at the beginning was fantastic.
― Johnny Fever, Friday, 16 November 2018 04:21 (seven years ago)
(the whole episode was fantastic, actually)
Honestly never expected one of the best shows on TV would feature Ted Danson channeling Matt Smith, but here we are.
― Mince Pramthwart (James Morrison), Friday, 16 November 2018 05:38 (seven years ago)
Via the podcast today, I learned the fight sequence was coordinated by the same guy who did all the work for the Bourne films (including the building jumping one in Morocco).

Lost feat Chuck McGill... loved it

i had been wondering why chidi never questioned the utilitarian good place calculation. glad they plan to address it.
― adam the (abanana), Saturday, 17 November 2018 02:23 (seven years ago)
Yeah, same. I really didn't think the show could get this good again.

they're on midseason break :/

it's back next week
― maura, Friday, 30 November 2018 14:24 (seven years ago)
oh nice! I assumed it was off till '19
― resident hack (Simon H.), Friday, 30 November 2018 14:26 (seven years ago)
Oh, that's okay, I guess. Was looking forward to my episode today...
― Leaghaidh am brón an t-anam bochd (dowd), Friday, 30 November 2018 14:38 (seven years ago)
after next week it's off again until January, then the last three episodes run b2b with new Brooklyn Nine-Nine and The Office repeats, presumably from the Schur era
― sans lep (sic), Friday, 30 November 2018 18:24 (seven years ago)
That's.... usually not a good sign for a show, no? Burning off episodes like that? I know it hasn't been renewed for S4 yet, but that doesn't make me feel good about the future.
― soaring skrrrtpeggios (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Friday, 30 November 2018 18:50 (seven years ago)
best thing that could happen to this show would be to go out on top. would be great if they wrapped after another season... or this one.
― Spottie, Friday, 30 November 2018 18:52 (seven years ago)
Burning would’ve been if they ran them off now and held the show until fall next year
― YouTube_-_funy_cats.flv (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Friday, 30 November 2018 19:01 (seven years ago)
On WTF Kristen was talking about Schur has had the whole storyline mapped out in his head from day 1. I thought she said it was a 5 season plan, but maybe I'm conflating it with something else.

Sitting on a mere three remaining episodes so that you can program a night around three shows by the same bloke, one of which you've just rescued from the network that cancelled it, does not indicate a lack of faith in that bloke, imo.
(One does wonder what the plan is after the third week, though.)
― sans lep (sic), Friday, 30 November 2018 19:05 (seven years ago)
Oh wait! I misread that as all three episodes b2b on the same night. That's what I intended with the burning 'em off comment. Never mind.
― soaring skrrrtpeggios (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Friday, 30 November 2018 19:08 (seven years ago)
Ah, sorry for confusion!
― sans lep (sic), Friday, 30 November 2018 19:12 (seven years ago)
Ha, it's fine, clearly I just misread. I just don't want one of the few new sitcoms I still watch to disappear just yet.

loved the wernham hogg vibe of the accounting department

Everything about that episode was fantastic. D'Arcy Carden is a national treasure.
― soaring skrrrtpeggios (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Friday, 7 December 2018 14:33 (seven years ago)
it's hard to believe that this show continues to get better with almost every episode.
I was kind of hoping that they'd discover no one had EVER gotten into the Good Place.
― akm, Friday, 7 December 2018 15:36 (seven years ago)
i love my favorite show
― jolene club remix (BradNelson), Friday, 7 December 2018 17:17 (seven years ago)
This was a great episode. A brilliant performance from D'Arcy Carden. It really connected in the way that the best of the episodes did.

So if they're finally in the real Good Place is it all going to be based on perceptions of idyllic society from 500 years ago? Hope so!
