can't wait till those new contrapoints viewers proceed to eat up all her takes about nb people & male privilege that other trans women have been pushing back against

lowercase (eric), Monday, 19 November 2018 16:44 (seven years ago)

I know you second thoughted that but can you explain plz? What are her thoughts on nb ppl and male priv? Or is this just some TERF thing?

Mordy, Monday, 19 November 2018 16:49 (seven years ago)

wish i cld find a good thread or post covering these bc i'm not a trans woman myself & don't want to misrepresent intracommunity discourse, but for now-- regarding her video "the aesthetic," there's been criticism about her using the "tabby" character as a sort of strawman, & her glossing over both in the video & in a subsequent (& then subsequently deleted) thread of the violence of gender non-conformance & her describing non-passing trans women as not quite women bc of their inability to pass

shld mb clarify by "her" i mean including takes she's endorsed, e.g. the male privilege thing is in regards to cosigning andrea long chu's thread about trans women having male privilege before they transition, which... others have pointed out is unnuanced for various reasons & however true it might sometimes be is rhetoric used towards explicitly transmisogynistic ends. also cosigning a thread from alc about gender being primarily determined by how society sees you, which overlaps w "the aesthetic"

there are certainly trans women & nonbinary people who agree w natalie on most those points (including alc herself natch) but a lot that don't, & there's something not-great about cis people & people who aren't circumscribed by those debates taking those positions to be self-evident when rhetoric at the v least adjacent to them is used to justify violence

lowercase (eric), Monday, 19 November 2018 17:20 (seven years ago)

*by "her takes"

oh nvm lol

lowercase (eric), Monday, 19 November 2018 17:25 (seven years ago)

i mean obv this isn't like a "cancelled" thing or w/e & i'm sure her videos on like incels are incisive

cosigning andrea long chu's thread about trans women having male privilege before they transition, which... others have pointed out is unnuanced for various reasons & however true it might sometimes be is rhetoric used towards explicitly transmisogynistic ends

oh cool i hate this argument

you're roundly otm here eric thank you

princess of hell (BradNelson), Monday, 19 November 2018 17:30 (seven years ago)

Thanks for the elaboration, eric. I haven't followed the response to her video on "The Aesthetic", but did find it murkier and more conflicted than many of her others. There is a risk if cis audiences are taking these to be the definitive trans perspectives.
