im confused as to how removing likes will improve the quality of —debate—

does this mean i have to add all the tweets i like to my bookmarks instead or else lose track of them

I think overall for most users it's a useless tool altho I do really like it as a bookmark

faving is at the very heart of social media life

They should put it back to beign a star and stop making it appear in people's TLs

Lots of things they *should"* do to make it more functional, they don't want to do any these things for whatever reason, it's getting almost as bad as facebook

imo in this era if there's no way to silently register some kind of engagement with the content on it the social media website will die probably

that "we've removed the hated tweet function" thing is too real. I don't get this at all. the fav (rip) / like button is elemental to twitter.

all we can do here is FP and it works okay

why is the favorite an essential feature?

it lets you communicate "yeah" to the tweeter without burdening them with reading your words

it allows u to tell ppl their tweet is your fave

it also imo motivates people to tweet more

the vast majority of twitter users have small follow counts and don't get replies. without the reassurance that somebody is reading (and enjoying) your ramblings, you're more likely to stop talking or go somewhere else

no way RTs are really actually twitters only good feature

the way the twitter overlords run twitter suggests they know nothing about their active user base nor do they understand how to attract new users

Twitter is a cesspool and the sooner the platform dies the better. I’ve reported so many vile accounts and nothing’s been done about them. Of course, the pipe bomber was on there threatening people who were being told by Twitter he didn’t violate their TOS, so.

It's cool how twitter has a button for "I want to show this tweet to my followers" and a button for "I like this but I don't want to show it to my followers" and they're just gradually reversing what the two buttons do

Twitter (mostly Jack) has a lot of problems w/r/t hate speech and who they ban/who they allow. But the medium is imo by far the best and most interesting of all the social media platforms. it's the only one that's idiosyncratic and isn't completely antiseptic like FB or straightforward IG. they need to either fire Jack or get serious about their hate speech priorities but I really hope it doesn't die, it's the only dynamic social media platform out there.

yeah the way they've handled the hate speech and the harassment and the bot stuff has been bad but I'm not sure that's the same issue as the other stuff we're talking about

my experience of twitter was not remotely dynamic, it is often a bunch of self-impressed people shouting identical jokes

and it was even this way in 2015 before the world ended and after severely culling who i followed

it's entirely up to the people you follow and how interested you are in reorienting your brain to the peculiarities of the site. I don't doubt you had a bad experience but one's experience is mostly dictated by those you follow, how often you check it, how much you like viral phenomena and are fascinated by the way memes spread (like I am).

I follow around 400 people and I actually like the "so and so liked this tweet by this person you don't follow" feature. also I love how direct from brain it is - yes, it is a cesspool because people are sick in the head. I find this fascinating, and often exhausting... but I'd really like to see FB go down and Twitter survive. IG can stay.

i will say that twitter being inextricably wrapped up with my career (media) probably poisoned me toward it early

but also everything you've described is awful flappy

i used to think it was amusing to idly observe the behavior of people who were demented but now that they are in charge, the thrill is gone

I'm in the same boat re: work, it's the only reason I'm still on FB and I hate it... the reticence to ban hate speech is disgusting but I guess ymmv as far as the functionality of the site. I just love how chaotic and insane it is. and it's not exactly a picnic, I get insane people yelling at me in my menchies (hehehehehehe) all the time. But at the same time I appreciate the insight it allows into everyone's thought process, because it so lends itself to impulsive behavior and revealing moments. I understand why this sounds like hell to some people though.

why would you want to know anything about anyone

flappy bird you must be coming at this from a position of relative safety
when i start to feel my safety threatened, it becomes less enjoyable to keep an eye on fringe thought because it isn't so fringe anymore
