yes, deciding to play trump's game & falling on her face spectacularly in the process is an own-goal, which is some dumb shit my man

Maybe I’m a complete fuckin’ idiot (“MAYBE?”, ILX screams as one), but I’m genuinely not seeing the face-plant/own-goal here. Explain it to me like it’s not obvious, cause to me it’s not, like, at all.

My posts in these threads are just coping mechanisms of varying efficacy (eg a CNN talking head LARP sesh in lieu of undying screams), the momentary pretense of control to offset a terrifying general lack thereof. Usually, anyway. Pretty sure Elizabeth Warren is taking copious notes rn.

xps to caek i had to dig into the table to parse what he meant there. its not that WW with no college are trending that much further to trump, although they did move moreso in that direction. the widening of that gap mostly comes from a dramatic shift of college educated WW to the democrats, a demographic that routinely voted for REPS save the two DEM wave midterms of 82 and 06.

also, 2018 is the first time this poll has a dem advantage with WM with college. huh.

f. hazel did a good job of this upthread:

Warren was being cute with the ambiguity of "Native American ancestry" in order to zing Trump, and naturally it's going to result in an eye-rolling press release from Kim TallBear, who is native herself and whose main research focus is race and science. Tribal membership, as a matter of self-determination, should be left up to them to define for themselves. And Warren should know better than to fuck around with public assertions about her blood quantum when the criteria for membership in the Cherokee Nation are readily available from the Cherokee Nation and do not include "the presence of genetic markers". Pleading ignorance about issues of DNA testing with respect to tribal membership is worse, because it just proves to Native Americans that once again you do not give a shit about them, it's all about white people fighting with each other. All Warren had to do was ask someone like Kim TallBear, who is easily reachable on Twitter, if this was a wise idea before going ahead with this obnoxious publicity stunt.

I'm on the fence about Warren running or for that matter why she'd even do this right now but regardless I believe this will have absolutely no bearing on any potential candidacy.

Is it too crazy to say that a pestilential male force is in control of this country right now?

I think we need to elect a woman president as soon as possible

ugh yes it is too crazy get a grip. or sure, yeah, base your politics on whether or not the candidate’s junk is an innie or an outtie

yeah ok it's too crazy I'll get a grip

Dan S, Tuesday, 16 October 2018 03:42 (five years ago) link

In the long term, this DNA kerfuffle won't make any difference to a potential Warren presidential campaign. It won't help her in the primaries and if she were to be nominated, it would be reduced to insignificance by November 2020. The most this could do for or against her would be to persuade some big donors or some party activists that she's either a stronger or weaker candidate than they thought she was. The public won't be swayed by this.

I agree w/ f hazel on why this was dumb

Anyway here's a thread chronicling efforts to mobilize black voters in Georgia

I’ll be traveling across Georgia for the next few days with the Black Voters Matter bus tour. They’re doing voter registration and outreach, trying to influence elections across the South. Follow here for updates! pic.twitter.com/07Nb4DEsZB

M bison yeah I think based on that data alone that could be good news or bad news for either side (it’s probably bad news for the gop because it’s them losing a growing constituency). But the main thing for me is the cliff edge 25ish pt change is very unusual.

There’s many reasons why the Warren thing is dumb, but correct me if I’m wrong, Warren was calling out Trump and not trying to join a Tribe.

He said captain, I said wot (FlopsyDuck), Tuesday, 16 October 2018 03:59 (five years ago) link

The point being made is that identifying as Native American is done within the context of the principles and guidance of the Tribes' consensus, and not by counting DNA nucleotides; implying that the DNA test proves her Native identity seeks to bypass the preferences of the Native Americans who've made their criteria clear.

sorry for getting upset, just don't see Palin and Thatcher as representative of women in politics in 2018, and do think that women politicians in the US on the whole are less likely to be racists, bigots and warmongers (there are exceptions obviously)

Was Warren's Pocahontas appellation purely from Trump or did he pick that up from somewhere. Seems like a particularly dumb transposition but then again I can't think of what other iconic fictional Native American names could have been substituted. I guess at least it wasn't Minne-ha-ha.

Some right-wing blog asshole called her "Fauxcahontas" when the whole thing first emerged, and Trump - being way too stupid to understand that - called her "Pocahontas" and his knuckle-walking death cult hooted joyfully when he did it, so he's kept pressing his personal pleasure-button ever since.

I know it's not the best thing for, like, a healthy democracy, but part of me can't help wishing we could just run our finest insult comic against Trump. I mean, he's already been roasted at least twice (on Comedy Central and the Correspondents' Dinner) and didn't appear to handle it well either time. What I'm saying is, Jeff Ross 2020. Or Lisa Lampanelli or Sarah Silverman or Anthony Jeselnik. I'm not picky.

|Restore| |Restart| |Quit| (Doctor Casino), Tuesday, 16 October 2018 13:28 (five years ago) link

Yeah, one of the most frustrating aspects of combating Trump is that the one thing he absolutely cannot take, his one demonstrable Achilles heel, is the bullying he dishes out, but dishing it out basically turns you into him. Which is the last thing I'd ever wish on anyone.

Extra Shprankles (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 16 October 2018 13:43 (five years ago) link

"I agree that what Warren did was dumb but I'm not gonna pretend anyone's gonna remember this in two weeks, much less 2020"

then you must not follow or know any Native activists, who are going to keep grinding this into the ground, as they have even prior to this DNA thing. Now, maybe Native activists have no actual sway or pull on electoral politics; but it depresses me to think of two years of relentless anti-Warren stuff coming from the Native left.

akm, Tuesday, 16 October 2018 13:45 (five years ago) link

Yerac, Tuesday, 16 October 2018 13:49 (five years ago) link

yea I don't know why Native activists would focus on a relatively small transgression by Warren instead of Trump doing Native American war cries at his rallies

frogbs, Tuesday, 16 October 2018 13:49 (five years ago) link

I wouldn't be surprised if Trump starts echoing the talking points of Native activists in lambasting Warren. Incoherent, you say? Inconsistent with his overt racism? An almost maddening demonstration of cognitive dissonance? Yeah. Exactly.

Extra Shprankles (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 16 October 2018 13:54 (five years ago) link

it really is maddening especially given the media's complicity in all this, it's just broadly accepted that Trump & the entire GOP are bigots and bullies who lie about literally everything but whenever Maxine Waters suggests that maybe Huckabee Sanders doesn't deserve to be able to eat in peace CNN spends an entire day clutching their pearls

frogbs, Tuesday, 16 October 2018 13:57 (five years ago) link

Pocahontas (the bad version), sometimes referred to as Elizabeth Warren, is getting slammed. She took a bogus DNA test and it showed that she may be 1/1024, far less than the average American. Now Cherokee Nation denies her, “DNA test is useless.” Even they don’t want her. Phony!

— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) October 16, 2018

lmao @ "The bad version"

frogbs, Tuesday, 16 October 2018 13:59 (five years ago) link

anyway, I firmly believe it doesn't really matter who the candidate is. You either support Trumpism or not. It's up to people to vote in overwhelming numbers blah blah and not have some shifty 3rd party trying to muck it up again.

Yerac, Tuesday, 16 October 2018 13:59 (five years ago) link

Also, the IRS needs to claw back all the money that the Trump family failed to pay in taxes over the years. this cannot be said enough.
