Ubering With The King (C. Grisso/McCain), Monday, 8 October 2018 22:05 (seven years ago)

When I think of the long run, its historians sifting through the ashes, Pete Postlethwaite in The Age of Stupid style. After the collapse, conservatism will be utterly discredited, at least until the next yuga.

godless hippie skank (Sanpaku), Monday, 8 October 2018 22:10 (seven years ago)

bequeathing an utterly fucked planet to the children whose lives you so deeply cherish

on the whole, the wealthy and privileged place their trust in the ability of money to save them from most unpleasantness. he'll no doubt make certain to bequeath those kids a prep school education, social connections, and several millions in 2018 dollars, thereby fulfilling his major duty to them as he sees it.

I always assume that the self-soothing inner monologue, if any is even necessary, is along the lines of ‘my descendants tremendous wealth will enable them to buy private armies/envirodomes/orbital condos/one of the precious few flasks of antimutation serum” etc

valet doberman (Jon not Jon), Monday, 8 October 2018 22:52 (seven years ago)

what will their descendants watch on TV when only rich people are left? there won't be song and dance people or gladiators in those future days

There are smarter and more dignified characters on the Federalist Society rosters.

AFAICT, the main reasons Kavanaugh was selected where his opinions on US v. Nixon, that would protect Trump from indictment, and his opinion that the EPA doesn't have the authority to regulate greenhouse emissions.

His nomination means hundreds of billions for carbon emitters, and tens of millions in political contributions for those who ratified his nomination. However, he's just an outlier, like Thomas, and will never persuade any moderate justice to his positions over his presumably long future career, and like Thomas will be vilified by future generations who will be broiling and starving due to the likes of him. It's a own goal against conservatism, in the long run.

Fuck every motherfucker in the federalist society. None of them are "dignified."

So the supreme court can now undo any action on climate change if by some miracle the us gets its act together in 2020

Trϵϵship, Monday, 8 October 2018 23:00 (seven years ago)

Also re rich ppl being able to buy security in a broken world... that is nonsense. Money only means something in a world with a functional economy.

Agree that anyone who thinks they will be able to adequately prepare themselves for a severe climate crisis is probably delusional. No one knows how that shit will play out.

Fedora Dostoyevsky (man alive), Monday, 8 October 2018 23:12 (seven years ago)

the Supreme Court’s authority is not necessarily supreme, despite the name. Anyway, the right thing to do is pack the court, preferably with women, preferably with people who went to other schools.

Were I in the Court, I'd do my own writing, and at the end of the year I'd rank my opinions, blog about them, and paste the link on ILX.

As I look back with the clarity of hindsight, I am convinced that coded racial appeals had at least as much, if not more, to do with the electoral success of the modern GOP than all of the policy proposals crafted by well-intentioned analysts like me. https://t.co/qIvBAPVhna

"There's no 'Dark Side of American Conservatism', really. Matter of fact, it's all dark."

Ubering With The King (C. Grisso/McCain), Tuesday, 9 October 2018 05:02 (seven years ago)

even in his mea culpa he's a fucking dumbass

Most Republicans in Congress voted in 1964 and 1965 for landmark civil rights legislation, but not Goldwater. In his 1960 bestseller “The Conscience of a Conservative,” Goldwater wrote that “the federal Constitution does not require the states to maintain racially mixed schools.” Goldwater was not personally a racist — he had integrated the Arizona Air National Guard — but, like his GOP successors, he was happy to make common cause with racists in order to wrest the South from the Democrats.

Goldwater was just as extreme when it came to foreign affairs. He suggested that Americans needed to overcome their “craven fear of death.” If the Soviets intervened to crush another uprising in Eastern Europe, like the one in Hungary in 1956, he wanted “to move a highly mobile task force equipped with appropriate nuclear weapons to the scene of the revolt.” I used to think Goldwater’s reputation as an extremist was a liberal libel. Reading his actual words — something I had not done before — reveals that he really was an extremist.

"Ryan’s retirement signals the final repudiation of an optimistic, inclusive brand of Reaganesque conservatism focused on enhancing economic opportunity at home and promoting democracy and free trade abroad."

this guy should have a blog where every week he reads the actual words of some conservative icon he's been praising to the skies, and then is shocked, shocked to discover right-wing extremism and racist dog-whistling going on here.

The paid D.C. protesters are now ready to REALLY protest because they haven’t gotten their checks - in other words, they weren’t paid! Screamers in Congress, and outside, were far too obvious - less professional than anticipated by those paying (or not paying) the bills!

— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) October 9, 2018

good point, where the hell is my god damn check Soros

frogbs, Tuesday, 9 October 2018 13:18 (seven years ago)

Shelling out good money on protestors seems like an investment with a pretty poor rate of return but I suppose President Deals understand business better than I.

Werther Down the Spiral (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 9 October 2018 13:25 (seven years ago)

uh it's an incredibly good deal if you just stiff 'em which President Deals knows a lot about

frogbs, Tuesday, 9 October 2018 13:29 (seven years ago)

Is he getting this idea just from their responding "No, we aren't paid"?

jmm, Tuesday, 9 October 2018 13:47 (seven years ago)

Well u see, from inside the mind of a Donald Trump where Donald Trump exists at the world's center, it is unthinkable that anyone might legitimately and openly despise Donald Trump, and the only explanation for such expressions is that some evil zillionaire has slipped a cool hundo into the pockets of staunch Trumpists and forced them very against their will to bite their lips and choke back tears as they spout seditious credos which run counter to their deep and abiding love for the Donald. It is the only explanation.

Werther Down the Spiral (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 9 October 2018 14:02 (seven years ago)

Soros bided his time and waited until the American public was truly exhausted from their streak of unabated winning, one might even say altogether sick of it, and then he pounced.

I figure a lot of protesters who get an offer from Soros call up Trump to see if they can get a counter-offer. The top talent really has all the leverage in the fake protest/crisis acting biz.
