In celebration that I am now working from home, and that I should stop buying so many $4 coffees on a variable income; I bought a cheap syphon from Alibaba.

With the Rwandan beans from the health food store on the high street it makes a very nice coffee. Quicker than drip if you heat the water in the kettle first.

And I finally got the rubber stopper on my aeropress replaced so A+ for ilx coming through.

I've been struggling with making coffee at home on the weekends / the iced coffee I get during the week. I use the same beans at home as the coffeeshop I go to uses for their iced coffee, but I can never get the same boost from the chemex at home as I do with the iced coffee. afaik I'm drinking the same amount of coffee so I figured my method might be fucked up or something. what gives?

I like shitty home coffee. My spouse makes me aeropress coffee when we get up and then when he goes to work I break out the french press so I can make shitty coffee for myself.

Maybe start using coffee ice cubes to cool down the coffee? I am sure someone here can tell you the issue with your grind, water temp or brew time.

Are they cold brewing their ice coffee? And do you mean that you're making regular coffee and then cooling it for iced coffee or are you referring to iced coffee?

The main reasons you are not getting the same "boost" would be either that you're not using enough beans/grinds or that your water temperature is not proper -- could be too hot or too cold. But if they're cold brewing and you're hot brewing it's going to seem different no matter what.

Also you could ask them (when it's not busy) how they do their coffee. I am sure they will love to tell you.

I fucked with coffee ice cubes for a bit a few years ago when my girlfriend at the time worked at a coffeeshop. I didn't dig it, too much caffeine. I grind at home but literally have not changed the settings in nearly two years and have no idea what they're set at. I boil water and pour immediately for the "bloom," then wait a minute and pour the rest. too much too fast?

xp no the iced coffee I get from them isn't cold brew. I can't drink cold brew, I think I'm allergic to it because every time I've had it my throat has closed up. I'm not exactly sure what their iced coffee process is, I've asked before, but afaik they just make iced coffee. yeah I will ask them tomorrow, a lot of my friends work there, I just keep forgetting.

Yeah, I think it was tracer that notified me of it when I was complaining about the seal wearing away on both my aeropresses (I am glad I kept them instead of tossing). Easy to order online, I think I got generic ones and they are totally fine.

have any of you tried those reusable chemex filters made out of stainless steel or titanium? how do they compare to the paper filters?

Just saw one of those the other day. Looks cool. The one I saw was a really fine mesh like my steel Aeropress filter. I also had a similar tea filter which was a pain to clean - that would be my main concern: Little grounds getting caught. I think tea is harder to rinse out than coffee, though.

yea that was my concern too, is it gonna have oily buildup that will be impossible to clean. i guess my moka pot has that & i don't really care but the muddiness is part of the moka pot appeal, w/ chemex i want it to be really clean coffee

I'd been using cloth for pour over and recently got cloth basket filters too. I think the company for the latter is "coffee sock". I like!

I was looking a small cold brew pitcher online but then just thought maybe I can use my french press (fill with water and then scatter grounds on top) and then plunge in the morning. Has anyone tried this?

i'm rounding the corner of a cold and my red eye this morning was magical

drinking pretty much exclusively tim horton's double doubles these days.

there's a 3rd wave coffee shop doing the pour over right nearby but it's just too far and too slow to go to on my morning break.

iced coffee batch was weak at my spot this morning so they made me an iced americano. haven't had one in a while. not even finished yet and feel dangerously 'jacked' - what's the caffeine level in an iced americano vs. an iced coffee? their iced coffee is p strong fwiw

depends on how the iced coffee is made. cold brew is less caffeine per volume than americanos and french press generally
