The show’s idea of Australia is way less accurate than the America-themed restaurant is at depicting America

Until the Brexit etc jokes I was convinced that this had to be in purpose, and leading to a reveal that they’re not really on earth, and it’s a fake Australia that doesn’t make any sense for in-story reasons

Four episodes in, they finally hire at least two, maybe three Australian accents to play Australians; they still don't bother to ask them what anything looks like or how anything works in Sydney.

(The barista selling lottery tickets [???!?!?!] was the first voice I perked up at: immediately after commenting that he sounded legit, the next new character onscreen was played by a guy I worked with at a bookshop 18 years ago [and went to see a play he was in once])

i have learned over time since moving to the US that it is definitely a HUGE hobbyhorse for
a) australians consuming american tv back home & b) new immigrants or temporary visitors from aus

*very* protective of our portrayal in the media
also: place names

australians are mostly portrayed in american tv shows as americans (ask anna torv, simon baker, hemsworth # 3, etc.)

I like the way this show never uses an excuse to pad or rest on its laurels. Most shows, with a promising set-up like Trevor the demon antagonising everyone, would let it run for a few episodes to squeeze out every last limp laugh, but this show resets the format almost every episode.

They're on the Global website in Canada. Can you not watch them on the NBC site in the US? It's what I used to do.

Hi Jimmy! I don't know if you remember the previous seasons, but about 80% of the episodes involve the four human leads being placed into a fake environment and told that it's something it isn't. They build our knowledge of them, and their rapport and care amongst themselves, by gradually (or rapidly) coming to realise that they're being lied to and the supposed reality of their environment has massive inconsistencies, incongruities and "errors" that are actually meant to subtly undermine their sense of well-being.

This season is being presented to them as though it's absolutely 100% reality, but nearly every single aspect of the world they are in (not counting the many good jokes like the koala headline, or jokes like Larry Hemsworth) is actually filled neck-deep with inconsistencies, incongruities, "errors" and things like Eleanor and Jason staying in the country for a year without visas. Hence wondering if this was a deliberate pointer.

yeah, what sic said is otm but also there’s the basic possibility that “near enough is good enough, fuck it” factored into the production of this show in which all the american characters constantly tell people in the bad place/medium place/australia that “i’m from arizona” or “i’m from florida“ which is some flagrantly solipsistic bullshit that frankly *clap* i *clap* don’t *clap* give *clap* a *clap* fuck *clap* about *clap*
