I'll keep checking until Kavanaugh is confirmed and then, yeah, I'm gonna be taking that prolonged news vacation. Gotta lot of vomiting to catch up on.

Werther Down the Spiral (Old Lunch), Friday, 5 October 2018 16:16 (seven years ago)

what else are senate dems supposed to do here?

tell voters they'll impeach him over perjury and do a real investigation if he gets confirmed

I am definitely not looking into buying a bunch of drones to deliver mifepristone and DUMPLINGS! on demand.

New poll from @latimes finds nearly every targeted House district tipping toward the Democrats. https://t.co/mixFblxcAY

Polls are for virgins who can't even drive.

so weird that garbage-person Dana Rohrabacher's critical constituency may turn out to be... conservative Vietnamese? wtf

Rohrabacher also benefits from significant support among Asian Americans, who make up about 1 in 8 of the likely voters. Elsewhere in California, Asian Americans lean heavily toward the Democrats, but this district includes a large, conservative Vietnamese population. Asian American voters overall divide almost equally between Rohrabacher and Rouda, the poll found.

does anyone remember when the President of the United States publicly claimed that sexual assault survivors were a dastardly plot by The Jew

Mitch McConnell is unquestionably the world's drabbest evil genius. It's like America is being destroyed by one plain rice cake.

I would guess it's a similar situation to older cubans

my friend texted me a bunch of pictures of their cats and I feel calmer now

but... Rohrabacher is like the number one guy that likes to cuddle up with "communist"/former communist regimes?! So if these are former refugees from the Vietnam War that are die-hard Ho Chi Minh haters or whatever, they've glommed on to an unlikely savior.

Murkowski is officially a No for confirmation. Perhaps Collins will join her, and Manchin will pull a McCain - yes to proceed, no on the actual vote.

I mean the simple explanation is...they're dumb and they don't pay attention to this?

Pretty much all of Orange County is heavily Republican, no need to isolate any ethnic groups. It's Nixonland.

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Friday, 5 October 2018 16:54 (seven years ago)

thx for that link Alfred

Οὖτις, Friday, 5 October 2018 16:54 (seven years ago)

that's certainly true that Orange County is heavily Republican, at least historically, but now:

As a result of those factors, Republicans lag behind in two of the four congressional districts that cover most of Orange County, long the heartland of California conservatism. The other two contests are dead heats.

that is crazy.

Οὖτις, Friday, 5 October 2018 16:55 (seven years ago)

Pretty much all of Orange County is heavily Republican, no need to isolate any ethnic groups. It's Nixonland.

this is a strange thing to say as OC politics is shifting very quickly, and ethnic groups are a big part of that

yeah everyone is gloomy but I'm still a little bit hopeful about this. like I said before I just don't get collins at all and who knows, but if you're making a scene with a splashy conference it makes more sense to do it when you're being the hero.

Except being a hero applies to both sides, right? She could be a dramatic yes vote to win the favor of Republicans.

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Friday, 5 October 2018 17:03 (seven years ago)

I’m of the belief that if they get any justice seated before the midterms it’ll be kind of a miracle if our institutions ever recover. Kept having immiserating thoughts this week about the future of democracy. Then I read this: http://www.lawyersgunsmoneyblog.com/2018/10/continuing-rise-american-style-fascism and, just, well, shit folks, things are fucking bleak as hell.

El Tomboto, Friday, 5 October 2018 17:10 (seven years ago)

oof I just read that too. This line gave me an ulcer: "Meanwhile, how the Republicans counter-attacked on Kavanaugh is nothing but a dry run for defending Trump."

rob, Friday, 5 October 2018 17:11 (seven years ago)

at this point I just don't believe Collins is going to do the right thing

Dan S, Friday, 5 October 2018 17:12 (seven years ago)

breaking w/ the pack is always going to feel like a more meaningful action than falling in line. she was treated like a national hero after the health care vote.

but again...she is a republican. she probably genuinely likes kavanaugh. who knows.

iatee, Friday, 5 October 2018 17:13 (seven years ago)

Before Sen. Jeff Flake (R-AZ) voted to advance Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh in a procedural vote Friday morning, he had a discussion with a friend on the other side of the aisle, Sen. Chris Coons (D-DE).

“We had a positive and I think constructive conversation. He gave me an opportunity to make a few points I was eager to make,” Coons told reporters in the Capitol before the vote. “We spoke about our remaining concerns.”

looks like that bonding trip to Africa they took together was totally worth it!!

electing Donald Trump as POTUS : the USA :: head trauma resulting in significant loss of brain matter : a living human being. Yes, you might be able to painfully shamble along for a little while in a crude imitation of life, but the writing is pretty much already on the wall if you still have enough remaining brain function to read it.

so is collins going to vote no but that douche is coming in after his daughters wedding which is going to kick this garbage to Pence?

akm, Friday, 5 October 2018 18:32 (seven years ago)

we'll know how collins is voting in about 25 minutes when she gives her epic speech at 3pm EST. most likely she will vote "YES".

Karl Malone, Friday, 5 October 2018 18:34 (seven years ago)

will her constituents vote YES when she runs for governor in 2020

If Collins, Murkowski, and every Democrat vote no, Kavanaugh is done. If Murkowski and every Democrat vote no, Pence breaks the tie and Kavanaugh is on the Supreme Court.

grawlix (unperson), Friday, 5 October 2018 18:35 (seven years ago)

will there be any barf left in my body when kavanaugh is STILL on the supreme court in 2050? there are so many mysteries out there

Karl Malone, Friday, 5 October 2018 18:36 (seven years ago)

Trick question, we will all be dead in 2050

"this is the last puzzle piece of the coup that these fuckers have been planning ever since Nixon resigned

the last piece? are you kidding? things can (and probably will) get so much worse

I was watching (ha) the Shahs of Sunset last night while some of them travelled through Turkey to the Iran border and it was very emotional for them to look at a land they were born in and can't return to and I thought well, that could be us in 20 years.

akm, Friday, 5 October 2018 18:37 (seven years ago)

I'm not convince Manchin is going to vote no. although I don't know what he has to loose by voting no. To me it would seem that any way he votes he potentially loses support (do republicans in WV support him?)

akm, Friday, 5 October 2018 18:38 (seven years ago)

Of course they will get worse, my point is that Kavanaugh is the last piece of the bullet train to hell

Between this shit and the Van Dyke verdict being delivered in a few minutes (they've already unofficially closed our office in anticipation of SOME kind of heightened response), it's just possible that I'll wind up having a panic attack before I make it home today.
