everywhere else is somehow warmer than AZ now. Went from hi 90s to hi 60s literally overnight and stayed there.

supposed to drop about 30 deg F in NYC by Sunday morning, ie to 46
finally, 11 weeks before Christmas

The heat finally broke overnight for us, just west of Michael's affected area. We'd still had lows in the 70s until last night, when it dropped to 62, and tonight is supposed to get down to 47. The summer never got to triple-digit extremes, it just went on 5 weeks too long.

fuck
― L'assie (Euler), Monday, 24 June 2019 08:11 (six years ago)
Not extremely hot here but stiflingly muggy, especially if you have to get to work using one of Boris' useless buses.
― Orpheus Knutt (Tom D.), Monday, 24 June 2019 08:14 (six years ago)
The great thing about humidity in this heat is you are sweating like a bastard, and so is everyone else, so I always imagine the sticky, heavy air as being everyone else’s recirculated sweat.
― govussy blues (gyac), Monday, 24 June 2019 08:14 (six years ago)
Good luck, Euler.
Looking forward to people across the Channel losing their minds over 27 degrees later this week.
― pomenitul, Monday, 24 June 2019 08:15 (six years ago)
30 in London next Saturday maybe, but 38 in Paria midweek :o
― nashwan, Monday, 24 June 2019 08:16 (six years ago)
the humidity is going to be over 50% here on Wednesday with temps pushing 40, so we're talking heat index of 48+. but it's already hellish this morning.
― L'assie (Euler), Monday, 24 June 2019 08:17 (six years ago)
17 in Lisbon right now.
Nearly everywhere in Europe has been hotter than here for ages. Arctic coast of Sakha/Siberia has been hotter for weeks on end
― cherry blossom, Monday, 24 June 2019 08:21 (six years ago)
That's insane.
― pomenitul, Monday, 24 June 2019 08:22 (six years ago)
that's the great thing about humidity in this heat?

29 last week, Chokurdakh is 27 this. Arkhangelsk was pushing 30 a couple weeks ago.
Dnipro in Ukraine was 38 last week. We've struggled to get over 21 all month

Hitting 34/35 tomorrow and possibly the same on Wednesday. These aren't temperatures for a Northerner ffs. Feeling for u Euler, must be way worse en Paname.
― Uptown VONC (Le Bateau Ivre), Monday, 24 June 2019 08:54 (six years ago)
the city's a heat sink, it's going to be rotten. I gave my last exam last week so while there are as usual talks & meetings to attend this week, I can skip all of them to stay in my apartment without much consequence. but it's still going to get soooo hot inside despite keeping the blinds down & windows closed, eating only cold foods & not using the big appliances.
― L'assie (Euler), Monday, 24 June 2019 09:07 (six years ago)
Aside from keeping blinds closed during the day, Le Monde recommends the following method:
Faites sécher du linge très humide à l’intérieur des pièces ou encore humidifiez un pot de terre cuite que vous aurez arrosé dans une bassine et placez-la à l’endroit où le logement est ensoleillé : en séchant, le linge et la terre cuite dégagent de l’eau évaporée, ce qui crée une climatisation naturelle…
― pomenitul, Monday, 24 June 2019 09:19 (six years ago)
Not a bad advice, and I'm no expert by any means, but when it's already crazy humid those clothes are barely going to dry n'est pas?
― Uptown VONC (Le Bateau Ivre), Monday, 24 June 2019 09:22 (six years ago)
If you place your wet clothes in the apartment's sunniest spot (although that only appears to be recommended for the terracotta pot method), you may be able to kill two birds with one stone. But I've never tried it myself.
― pomenitul, Monday, 24 June 2019 09:26 (six years ago)
Well it's worth a try even for me. I'm sticky enough as it is.
― Uptown VONC (Le Bateau Ivre), Monday, 24 June 2019 09:38 (six years ago)
just got caught on the tops during a torrential downpour with some thunder and lightning. It was too late to turn back so had to get drenched and leave it up to the gods if they want to put a few hundred megavolts through me. I avoided going out earlier because the lightning storms were foretasted for this morning ffs.
― calzino, Monday, 24 June 2019 11:10 (six years ago)

― calzino, Monday, 24 June 2019 11:18 (six years ago)
I've been caught out by thunder and flashflood like rain a number of times, but never was it so bad as on Top Withens, quite near you Calz iirc. Nowhere to hide, like you said: "get drenched and leave it up to the gods". I love thunder and all but that was quite scary.
― Uptown VONC (Le Bateau Ivre), Monday, 24 June 2019 11:25 (six years ago)
not a bad way to go I reckon, but saying that I'm not in a rush at the moment - maybe at some later date!
― calzino, Monday, 24 June 2019 11:29 (six years ago)
No storms here yet but the humidity really wallops you in the face when you go outside. V glad to be in an airconditioned building

went out for a quite a big walk this evening, only about 19°C but late 80's % humidity which gives it that primordial earth feeling for those that have never even seen 40+°C nor ever left Europe. Got back home and some rando crim type with a bottle in his hand was trying my kitchen door, via the side box room. I burst in there and he ran off saying "you shit me up then" I was too perplexed to answer and he added some bollox about "wrong house" while he was running off. That first attempted break-in of the summer is always the freshest one!

16C this morning and I'm dripping, that'll be the 92% humidity I suppose

― Orpheus Knutt (Tom D.), Tuesday, 25 June 2019 07:17 (six years ago)
we came to London from DC just in time to catch the big muggy heatwave and it would be thoroughly LOL if it wasn’t for all the enclosed spaces you maintain without any air circulation at all e.g. toilets
― El Tomboto, Tuesday, 25 June 2019 20:03 (six years ago)
London air's not worth circulating tbf.
― Orpheus Knutt (Tom D.), Tuesday, 25 June 2019 20:05 (six years ago)
Spotted a guy on the tube this afternoon who had rolled up the sleeves on a thick t-shirt (thin jumper?), tucked it in to his shorts, and then I noticed his belt was also on backwards and upside down. HOW.

Bleurgh. I’m calling it the Menopause Terrarium l.
― suzy, Tuesday, 25 June 2019 20:14 (six years ago)
London was too warm and manky for me today, though unlike when I was down a few weeks ago I didn't see anyone insisting on wearing North Face type jackets on the tube, I'm assuming it's some kind of portable personal sauna thing that hasn't caught on anywhere else.
― michaellambert, Tuesday, 25 June 2019 20:40 (six years ago)
Now y'all know why I fucking hate this season. Fuck summer, and fuck climate change (you can't tell me the fucked up weather going on in Western Europe isn't being caused by climate change). Y'all need to spend as much time as possible during the daylight hours in public spaces with air conditioning, take plenty of showers, and stay hydrated. Sincerely and with the utmost of sympathy, a native Texan who's accustomed to (but still loathes) insane heat.
