Ernie Bushmiller's "Nancy": C/D?

I just read a bunch of the latest strips and have concluded that the moment of apocalypse was whenever the first comment box was made

They really should remove the comments section below the cartoon. Some real Youtube-level trash there

what's striking is the variety of terribleness too: breathless internet sleuths trying to deduce her identity, comicsgaters, sad nostalgists, people criticizing a cartoon for not using three-point perspective, etc.

I might feel more sympathy for the nostalgists - sd OJ is actually pretty inconsistent! - but the Gilchrist comics they love are so, so bad, like among the worst public art I have ever seen.

I agree with Chuck about the lack of consistency but am inclined to cut a daily strip a lot of slack at the outset. I could also never read this again and not really care, which is why the commenters are so alien to me.

yeah i think anyone expecting consistency is... looking for the wrong thing. these things always read best in bumper digests. they're the original bingewatch object.

i will say i am a complete mark for jaimes' nancy. it is pretty much all i want from the internet right now, a new nancy strip to read every day.

i do also feel that setting up people into jaimes/gilchrist camps is a false dichotomy. it's actually people who likes olivia jaimes' nancy vs. horrible human beings, and i don't have any particular evidence gilchrist is a horrible human being.

gilchrist's comics are so visually unappealing and gross i can barely stand to look at them. the guy makes bil keane look like chris ware.

also, i now feel totally validated for always having hated the moody blues (except for "go now" which gets a free pass)

Are there going to be print collections of James' Nancy strips or am I misunderstanding the banter upthread? Because I think these strips are awesome but I basically forget to read them unless this thread is bumped

I think the print collections being discussed are are all vintage Bushmiller stuff. All the Jaimes strips can be found on the gocomics Nancy page.

Starting my next project---a graphic biography of my cartoon hero, "Nancy" creator, Ernie Bushmiller. Peeling back the layers and finding a nuanced, complex man whose life paralelled the evolution of comics in New York City from the Nineteen teens to the Seventies. Who knows, I may even uncover the identities of Sluggo's parents.

Why did you decide to lead off your run on the comic with the strip about Nancy eating corn bread?
I went back and I looked at the end of [previous “Nancy” cartoonist] Guy Gilchrist’s run. Nancy as a character had drifted from where I envision her, in that the Nancy I know and love is a total jerk and also gluttonous and also has big feelings and voraciously consumes her world. And I was like, I need to do a character-reset week. Just kinda being like, Here’s who Nancy’s gonna be right now. And also, I love corn bread. So, that’s it. That’s the reason. I wanted to reset expectations and pay homage to my favorite food.
