"last time i was in SF there was some local cable access show with a panel of random people who review restaurants and it was so mesmerizing."

That's not Cable that's PBS!

huh - never heard of it. got some nice gear though. don't recognize anyone that's recorded there, makes me think they haven't been around for too long...? how'd you hear about 'em?

This is my fave place for vegetarian burritos in SF. Lots of haterz will tell you how it's so inauthentic and shit, but the Jerry's burrito is absolutely the yum.

Otherwise, it's almost impossible to sit down at a restaraunt in SF and not have at least vegetarian options, if not vegan. And if you don't see 'em, ask. I went to Gary Danko for an anniversary some years back and they had no vegetarian options on the menu but they served me one of the best vegetarian meals I have ever had.

libcrypt, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 21:21 (eighteen years ago)

Also, I like Herbivore, so this certifies me as totally mad.

libcrypt, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 21:24 (eighteen years ago)

I like Balazo a lot but yeah "authentic" eh, I dunno.

who cares about authenticity anyway

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 21:27 (eighteen years ago)

libcrypt, I could care less about burrito 'authenticity' and it's not my absolute favorite but I like Balazo's fine.

Michael White, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 21:28 (eighteen years ago)

I am a raving carnivore but I've liked Millenium the few times I've been, Herbivore, not so much.

Michael White, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 21:30 (eighteen years ago)

altho honestly I don't usually get the burritos when I go to Balazo - I usually get the chille rellenos or taco salad

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 21:30 (eighteen years ago)

who cares about authenticity anyway

These people seem to care about it:

I find their reviews to be absolutely and totally off the mark, tho.

libcrypt, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 21:31 (eighteen years ago)

Millennium is good, but I think that Greens has a slight edge if only because of the nice view.

You can get some really fine vegetarian tapas here^^^ (yes, I live in the upper haight) and quite potent sangria. No reservations, so you just have to arrive at the right time or else wait an hour.

libcrypt, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 21:36 (eighteen years ago)

okay I draw the line at that place. ugh

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 21:37 (eighteen years ago)

here are some places i scribbled down based on looking at vegdining.com - i think i actually ate at the golden era last time i was in town and they had some pretty radical fake chicken drumsticks:

- Ananda Fuara
- Bok Choy Garden
- Golden Era Vegetarian Restaurant
- Herbivore
- Millennium Restaurant
- Ike's Place
- Under dog
- Squat and Gobble

i might rule out squat and gobble based on the name.

homosexual II, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 21:42 (eighteen years ago)

Squat and Gobble is a chain - okay but nothing special, and definitely not specifically vegetarian

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 21:43 (eighteen years ago)

those liars!

homosexual II, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 21:45 (eighteen years ago)

they have one of those generic chalkboard menus and everything is either a crepe or an omelette or a sandwich

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 21:46 (eighteen years ago)

I avoid vegetarian asian restaurants, as a general rule. They all seem to be the same bland thing as far as I can tell. Squat and Gobble is good for vegetarian lunch/brunch: They have tofu scramble, pretty good salads, and vegan chili.

I went here a few weeks ago and I was impressed with the chili rellenos.

libcrypt, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 21:48 (eighteen years ago)

I really want to check that place out.

Michael White, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 21:49 (eighteen years ago)

Mexico-DF was practically empty on the Thursday night I was there. The service was good and the food rich and reasonably interesting. They have these cheesy lighted paintings, though, which change every 15 minutes or so.

libcrypt, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 21:53 (eighteen years ago)

cheesy? more like classic.

homosexual II, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 22:02 (eighteen years ago)

dude at Jay's cheesesteak ruined their veggie options for me by pointing out to me that they cook the veggie stuff over the same areas where they cook the meat, and they do the fries in lard, so it's not really veggie.

I think herbivore is pretty good, personally. It's not expensive and it's alright. but i go to the one in berkeley more than the ones in SF.

akm, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 22:09 (eighteen years ago)

I tried to see how many places I could list off the top of my head. I came up with 86 in 10 minutes, including in wine country/marin. You may bestow my ribbon now.

gabbneb, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 22:25 (eighteen years ago)

CLUSTER!

dan selzer, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 22:28 (eighteen years ago)

yeah I'm bummed I can't go to that

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 22:30 (eighteen years ago)

Ananda Fuara is bleh.

Alex in SF, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 22:40 (eighteen years ago)

their club sandwich is really good

akm, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 22:41 (eighteen years ago)

All my vegetarian friends swear by the sandwiches at Love N Haight, though I've never had one.

Michael White, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 23:06 (eighteen years ago)

is that the vietnamese place next to Noc-Noc?

Steve Shasta, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 23:08 (eighteen years ago)

Is it Vietnamese? I've been in to pick up a sandwich for a friend, but I didn't notice anything Vietnamese about it. It is just down from Noc-Noc, though.

Michael White, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 23:10 (eighteen years ago)

I thought they had like falafel and pizza and stuff

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 23:11 (eighteen years ago)

Golden Era makes me sick. Cha Cha Cha is cool! My friend J works there and i always get fuckered up on sangria.

chaki, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 23:12 (eighteen years ago)

huh - never heard of it. got some nice gear though. don't recognize anyone that's recorded there, makes me think they haven't been around for too long...? how'd you hear about 'em?

The guy who runs it is a friend of our drummer.

Elvis Telecom, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 23:14 (eighteen years ago)

i'm going to be in SF this weekend & will have time to hang on sunday and at least part of monday, if anyone's up for a beer or brunch or something. (how is universal cafe?)

get bent, Friday, 15 February 2008 13:32 (eighteen years ago)

I haven't been in ages, but their brunch used to be great as I recall.

Michael White, Friday, 15 February 2008 15:16 (eighteen years ago)

That settles it. Next V-day I'm taking chaki to Cha Cha Cha instead of Shakey Mo.

libcrypt, Friday, 15 February 2008 17:37 (eighteen years ago)

I'll be at Murio's getting shnockered.

Michael White, Friday, 15 February 2008 17:59 (eighteen years ago)

ah the Trophy Room

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 15 February 2008 18:05 (eighteen years ago)

Murio's is kinda creepy and weird but still better than Cha Cha Cha's!

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 15 February 2008 18:06 (eighteen years ago)

get bent, Saturday, 16 February 2008 04:33 (eighteen years ago)

Have you been to Brenda's, Shakey?

this place, WAU

i was temporarily tased by the pumpkin pancakes with butter pecan sauce

get bent, Tuesday, 19 February 2008 18:26 (eighteen years ago)

Murio's used to be my urinary heaven during prolonged Amoeba visits.

Steve Shasta, Tuesday, 19 February 2008 18:44 (eighteen years ago)

Off topic, but to anybody visiting the Exploratorium, definitely make an appointment to experience the Tactile Dome, an internal sculpture exhibit which people will feel but never see. The exhibit is encased in a geodesic dome about the size of a large weather balloon. Visitors enter through a light-lock room into a totally dark maze (path). Then, for an hour and fifteen minutes, they feel, bump, slide and crawl through and past hundreds of materials and shapes which blend, change and contrast.

Bobbi Peru, Tuesday, 19 February 2008 19:07 (eighteen years ago)

^^^^true - very fun!

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 19 February 2008 19:08 (eighteen years ago)

akm, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 18:19 (eighteen years ago)

chaki, Thursday, 28 February 2008 17:14 (eighteen years ago)

akm, Thursday, 28 February 2008 17:16 (eighteen years ago)

Michael White, Thursday, 28 February 2008 17:21 (eighteen years ago)
