Ok, pretty convinced at this point that clip I posted is fake. It's not any more terrifying than some of the legit clips floating around, though.

Fetchboy, Sunday, 16 September 2018 17:32 (seven years ago)

oh. i was more shocked by the footage of like, wind ripping up paving stones and knocking cranes off skyscrapers

Trϵϵship, Sunday, 16 September 2018 17:33 (seven years ago)

3 more months. If the season goes by the old pattern .
I don't remember hearing much about the summer months in it. So is this about the heaviest time normally or doies it actually tend to get worse as the season continues.

Stevolende, Sunday, 16 September 2018 18:11 (seven years ago)

I mean hurricane season is listed as June to November so a nice polite squall should stick to that schedule innit.

Stevolende, Sunday, 16 September 2018 18:42 (seven years ago)

Not really that reassuring but there's some comfort in knowing that those swaying buildings are doing exactly what they're supposed to

two weeks pass...

Michael is another monster, 7 MPH shy of category 5 at this point.

omar little, Wednesday, 10 October 2018 16:21 (seven years ago)

I'm terrified for the Panhandle. Rapid intensification is normal these days. Only a matter of time when one heads for Miami-Dade and Broward.

You like queer? I like queer. Still like queer. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 10 October 2018 16:22 (seven years ago)

two days ago i saw a mild headline about this tropical storm and now it's turned into a Katrina. it's shocking how fast they develop into catastrophic storms now, yeah.

Hurricane-force wind gusts, torrential rains, and a massive storm surge are belting Florida’s Panhandle as extremely dangerous Hurricane Michael closes in on an afternoon landfall. At 11:30 am EDT, the hurricane hunters found that Michael was still intensifying, with sustained winds of 150 mph and a central pressure of 923 mb. A storm surge of over seven feet was already affecting the Panhandle, inundating many escape routes. Michael is poised to be one of the most top-ten most intense hurricanes on record to make landfall in the U.S.

Stations now reporting 116 mph gusts as eyewall comes ashore. Landfall will officially occur when the center of the eye (lowest pressure) transects the coastline ... just southeast of Tyndall AFB and NW of Mexico Beach. pic.twitter.com/JajQBWyyoC

Pesto Mindset (Eazy), Wednesday, 10 October 2018 16:59 (seven years ago)

Goes to show you that you really should not be focused on the intensity forecasts 5 days out and should focus on the trajectory and err on the side of caution.

Forecasters have admitted intensification is hard to predict many days out and some were dismissive of the storm on Sunday as it was forecast to be only a Cat 1 before coming ashore.

Not as if a Cat 1 wouldn't have also been dangerous for coastal areas...but you pretty much can't bank on a storm being weak just cos an early forecast guesses so

fuck the NRA (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 10 October 2018 17:05 (seven years ago)

Unbelievably horrifying strengthening continues. Hurricane Michael will likely be the 3rd strongest to hit continental United States in last 167 years. Central pressure down to 919mb. Only stronger storms have been 1935 Labor Day and Camille. pic.twitter.com/ngqoovoMNm

I've relatives who live here. It's Deniersville, so I frankly hope for limited loss of life, but sufficient loss of wealth to change some minds.

godless hippie skank (Sanpaku), Wednesday, 10 October 2018 20:59 (seven years ago)

Since 1990, meterologists have gotten way better at predicting where a hurricane is going.

But forecasts of hurricane *strength* haven’t really improved.

That’s why Hurricane Michael’s speedy transformation into a record-breaking Category 4 is alarming. https://t.co/iDeUx5JLqs

Dan S, Thursday, 11 October 2018 00:12 (seven years ago)

it was extremely odd recently to look up in the sky to the south/southeast of Los Angeles and see these massive, strange-appearing storm clouds and knowing that they were from a rare Pacific hurricane that was dissipating after coming ashore in Mexico. Los Angeles was actually grazed by a hurricane once, in 1858. i wonder if we might see another one at some point, considering everything w/climate change.

omar little, Thursday, 11 October 2018 00:20 (seven years ago)

Here's a weird one-

Hurricane Leslie has been wandering around the Atlantic for a while now (not as a hurricane). It's now heading toward Portugal (!).
