I wonder how much of an effort was made to offer accommodations to those who have financial considerations - escape pods of some kind

| (Latham Green), Friday, 14 September 2018 17:46 (seven years ago)

you'd think they'd factor in the costs of potential rescue operations and maybe foot the bill to help people who couldn't afford to leave otherwise. idk.

omar little, Friday, 14 September 2018 17:48 (seven years ago)

there are plenty of stubborn people who had the resources to leave and chose not to do so. also plenty of people who couldn't afford to leave.

Karl Malone, Friday, 14 September 2018 17:49 (seven years ago)

sorry to Both Sides this, but it's true

Karl Malone, Friday, 14 September 2018 17:50 (seven years ago)

yeah just bums me you to see rescue personnel risking their lives because someone thought they could just wait it out .

$10 million to Ice from FEMA and $29 from the coastguard really does seem so thought through at this moment in time doesn't it?

Stevolende, Friday, 14 September 2018 19:32 (seven years ago)

sorry to Both Sides this, but it's true

― Karl Malone, Friday, September 14, 2018

Yep. Lester Holt, cited here earlier, interviewed a family on Wednesday that couldn't afford to leave.

The Silky Veils of Alfred (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 14 September 2018 19:35 (seven years ago)

xp $29 million that was supposed to be.

Stevolende, Friday, 14 September 2018 19:39 (seven years ago)

lol Trump is petty enough to take just $29 from the Coast Guard--"No snacks today!".

On the redeye to Boston Tuesday someone near me was a lineman flying out with a crew to rent a truck and go down to the Carolinas to be ready to work. He anticipated a couple months of work.

... and if it floods that stretch down south, etc etc

rip van wanko, Friday, 14 September 2018 20:33 (seven years ago)

I just got back from lunch with an 82-year-old friend (legally blind, limited mobility, pancreatic cancer) who evacuated with his wife (diabetic, needs back surgery, chronically depressed). Fortunately his son, daughter-in-law, other relatives, and four dogs were able to convoy to safer ground in a camper truck and a Jeep. These are people who could afford to evacuate in the sense that they had the means to get out of North Carolina, but I doubt they can afford to be away from home for very long. The old folks are staying in a hotel, the younger ones are camping at a relative's house. A neighbor who didn't evacuate is an essential phone contact, giving them updates on property damage, power outages, etc. The decision to stay or go can be very complicated, even when the dangers of staying are obvious.

Brad C., Friday, 14 September 2018 20:47 (seven years ago)

I haven't been able to follow this closely but I get the sense Florence has not been nearly as awful as it could have been?

rip van wanko, Saturday, 15 September 2018 01:18 (seven years ago)

the flooding is 10 to 17 feet above normal in some areas

The Silky Veils of Alfred (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 15 September 2018 01:24 (seven years ago)

early on, too - record rainfall is going to be happening for the next several days, and flooding will be happening for weeks.

but yeah, it's true that it could have been worse, in terms of windspeed. a lot of people are focused on the category designation - it was predicted to be a category 3 or 4 on landfall, and "only" ended up being a category 1. which is great news, of course, but it only feeds the suspicions of some people that all of this hurricane stuff is a bunch of overblown bullshit. humans are shortsighted fucking morons, sometimes.

No reporst I've read or seen quote residents in NC or SC who think the meteorologists exaggerated.

The Silky Veils of Alfred (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 15 September 2018 01:39 (seven years ago)

The rain and flooding can be devastating. Sure houses being blown down is dramatic, but flooding can have more widespread impact.

Ok, pretty convinced at this point that clip I posted is fake. It's not any more terrifying than some of the legit clips floating around, though.

Fetchboy, Sunday, 16 September 2018 17:32 (seven years ago)

oh. i was more shocked by the footage of like, wind ripping up paving stones and knocking cranes off skyscrapers

Trϵϵship, Sunday, 16 September 2018 17:33 (seven years ago)

3 more months. If the season goes by the old pattern .
I don't remember hearing much about the summer months in it. So is this about the heaviest time normally or doies it actually tend to get worse as the season continues.

Stevolende, Sunday, 16 September 2018 18:11 (seven years ago)

I mean hurricane season is listed as June to November so a nice polite squall should stick to that schedule innit.

Stevolende, Sunday, 16 September 2018 18:42 (seven years ago)

Not really that reassuring but there's some comfort in knowing that those swaying buildings are doing exactly what they're supposed to
