Good morning waking up after a long day of hurricane reporting I was looking at twitter and seeing the NC Sea Level Rise story coming back up in the context of #HurricaneFlorence - Since I broke the story, I feel like I ought to say something . . .— Kirk Ross (@ludkmr) September 12, 2018

Another reminder there that there are some fucking idiots in government with a wilful disregard for science and risk management in the name of lining their or their cronies pockets.

It looks like they're going to evac to Jacksonville tomorrow, so that's good.

Trump grifted BK, would not surprise me if the ploots try to figure out ways to grift seaside flooding policies to get direct public subsidies for their direct losses or even hypothetical losses for anticipated investment expectations or something else obviously ridiculous. Like- “that rezoning for my planned hotel property which is now underwater is just a federal takings!” “Uh, its not rezoned, its just...underwater” “ONLY BECAUSE THE GOVT WOULD NOT PAY FOR EMBANKMENTS DREDGING AND OTHER FLOOD CONTROL, IT’S ANTIAMERICAN!”

what about the people who are just too fucking broke to go anywhere. i myself have spent a lot of my life at that level of poverty. they seem to get scant regard from the media

There has been weather monitoring in the city of Wilmington, NC for nearly 150 years. The most recent NCEP WPC rainfall prediction for Hurricane #Florence would shatter the historical record for 7-day rainfall accumulation by more than a foot. pic.twitter.com/CsSrSfRMKE— Robert Rohde (@rarohde) September 13, 2018

There was a segment on this on the NBC news last night. Lester Holt interviewed a family who are in a mandatory evacuation zone, but can't afford to leave. They got offers from friends to stay inland, but as they pointed out, you still have to pay for gas there and back, in addition to buying/bringing food to wherever you're staying. Also, the mother has an autoimmune condition that leaves her acutely susceptible to contracting contagious diseases, so a shelter isn't an option. Adding insult to injury, they're being shamed for their "selfishness" by acquaintances.

yeah, and there is substantial overlap with "people staying for religious reasons" and "people staying because they're too broke to leave" probably

I've heard albums that sound like that live stream.

Is anyone else waiting for the camera on Frying Pan Tower to be ripped away entirely?
― There's more Italy than necessary. (in orbit), Thursday, 13 September 2018 20:30 (seven years ago)
That poor flag is definitely falling apart. Slowly, yet nonetheless.
― Totally different head. Totally. (Austin), Thursday, 13 September 2018 20:32 (seven years ago)
Also, it's going to be too dark to see anything on that live stream before too much longer.
― Totally different head. Totally. (Austin), Thursday, 13 September 2018 20:33 (seven years ago)
You could draw upon that live stream to prepare a lecture on the sublime.

There's a Keiji Haino piece on his boxed set that sounds eerily similar to this.

you can see the camera dying from around -2:35:00 onward in the livestream. the color and focus gradually get out of whack before it reverts to black and white and dissolves into a grainy daguerrotype. William Basinski is currently sitting on his roof and writing a soundtrack for it.

soundtrack has already been written

i like the part where the color switches to monochrome, too. well done, terrible unfolding disaster

So glad that they're so prepared for hurricane season that they realised they had a financial surplus.

so frustrating watching these people that refused to listen to experts and authorities and get out of there now have to be rescued from flood waters .
― (•̪●) (carne asada), Friday, 14 September 2018 17:23 (seven years ago)
some ppl literally cannot afford to leave
― gbx, Friday, 14 September 2018 17:35 (seven years ago)
for some reason i feel like that is not the majority in a lot of these cases but i could be wrong. I saw plenty of people being interviewed that last few days that were just being stupidly stubborn .
― (•̪●) (carne asada), Friday, 14 September 2018 17:42 (seven years ago)
this was also a very slow moving storm ,it didn't sneak up on anyone
― (•̪●) (carne asada), Friday, 14 September 2018 17:44 (seven years ago)
I wonder how much of an effort was made to offer accommodations to those who have financial considerations - escape pods of some kind
― | (Latham Green), Friday, 14 September 2018 17:46 (seven years ago)
you'd think they'd factor in the costs of potential rescue operations and maybe foot the bill to help people who couldn't afford to leave otherwise. idk.
― omar little, Friday, 14 September 2018 17:48 (seven years ago)
there are plenty of stubborn people who had the resources to leave and chose not to do so. also plenty of people who couldn't afford to leave.
― Karl Malone, Friday, 14 September 2018 17:49 (seven years ago)
sorry to Both Sides this, but it's true

$10 million to Ice from FEMA and $29 from the coastguard really does seem so thought through at this moment in time doesn't it?
― Stevolende, Friday, 14 September 2018 19:32 (seven years ago)
― Karl Malone, Friday, September 14, 2018
Yep. Lester Holt, cited here earlier, interviewed a family on Wednesday that couldn't afford to leave.
― The Silky Veils of Alfred (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 14 September 2018 19:35 (seven years ago)
xp $29 million that was supposed to be.
― Stevolende, Friday, 14 September 2018 19:39 (seven years ago)
lol Trump is petty enough to take just $29 from the Coast Guard--"No snacks today!".
