sounds like they discontinued the SE
Macs TKI honestly feel nothing for any products Apple makes these days, I’m not mad or anything it’s all just at a stable equilibrium and design differentiators are basically impossible, since all anyone wants is things built on the same lines as the products Apple introduced 2003-2007. They are still dragging their heels on a MacBook based on an Apple-designed ARM SoC and that irritates me a bit.

Speaking for myself but I can't help but imagine there are many other people like me: the thought of switching to another OS is terrifying/paralyzing. I have used Apple all my life. Used Windows XP when I was in HS but that's it. Ever since his death the company has totally stagnated and failed to invent or introduce anything truly exciting. I use Apple products but I'm not a super fan, like I couldn't care less about the watch. All of their products keep getting worse too, in different ways. But I can't switch.

I still balk at the idea of paying $1k for a friggin' phone. Also don't quite understand the difference in the X tiers
― Nhex, Wednesday, 12 September 2018 22:29 (seven years ago)
I borrowed one of the fancy new Dell Windows laptops for a week to see if I could get along with it - god, it still sucked so much. All the things I hate about OS X (notifications, handoffs) combined with an absolutely miserable trackpad.
I think I'd be fine with one of the 'pure' Android phones without any of the Samsung overlay bullshit but there's not really any enticement to switch (nor any enticement to switch to a new iPhone, tho).

When my dad died I inherited his almost new iPad, this is the device I find most useless of everything I've owned. The screen's pretty but it's awkward to type on, more awkward to play games on than a phone, uncomfortable to hold for reading books.
Total found uses: drum machine+synth apps, reading comics. For something that probably cost $900 new.
― louise ck (milo z), Wednesday, 12 September 2018 22:40 (seven years ago)
the apps for music making are a pretty compelling reason to get an iPad, though never for $900 imo... like, anything as much or less than an SP-404 makes sense.
― flappy bird, Wednesday, 12 September 2018 22:49 (seven years ago)
i have to use ipads for work (including keyboard covers) and they're just awkward. they need a flat surface to sit on, the keyboards aren't great at all for typing, and phones do pretty much the same thing most of the time.

I’m on the iPhone upgrade program so I’ll get a new XSMAX. I don’t think I have a need for 512 GB tho. Current have 256 and only use about 100 gigs. I don’t expect I’ll start shooting a lot of 4K video or whatever would fill that up.

I have trouble with this too. Also I imagine there are a lot of younger people who are just growing up used to wireless and don't care enough about the improved sound from the wired connection. Today's pop music is p much designed for shitty audio anyway.

I disagree with the part about not paying $900 for one. I bought an iPad Pro last year. It was a lot of money for me - it was a purchase that I considered for a long time, and so far I have zero regrets. There seems to be an endless supply of innovative music apps. It seems like every few months someone drops a new app that changes how I approach everything. The downside of this is that I feel like I am constantly in learning mode, but it has helped me get closer to what I consider to be the perfect workflow. The touch screen is perfect for music software - gets you closer to "knob twiddling" than using a mouse on a desktop. I also use it for drawing and there are some top notch apps for that as well. The biggest concern I have is that the device is going to be outdated before I feel I've fully gotten its value.
― beard papa, Thursday, 13 September 2018 15:48 (seven years ago)
true. and the extra $$$ obviously justified by everything else the iPad can do, even if you choose not to use it. yeah, I've thought about it a lot, because a lot of friends of mine use them for music and they're super portable, powerful, and versatile. wouldn't mind getting one as a gift tbh!

I’ve got an m4 air with 24GB RAM. I’m surprised about how memory efficient it, I’ve been running some localModels (Gemma 4 and qwen3vl) and doing some ML stuff, often multiple instances at the same time and it barely touches the sides.
Google chrome is a memory leak with tabs and can fill it up no problems if you visit the wrong website.
Disappointing though as I was hoping that something like an upcoming M5 mini with 64GB would be a killer openclaw/claude code with local models box.

I really did deficit spent an obscene amount back then: 128GB RAM and 8TB. Sometime last month I finally paid it off with enough work.
It has to be an everything computer: I have a side-gig where I'm doing Final Cut Pro stuff, and another where I'm running around with it as a network monitor, wi-fi scanner, and virtual machine for Windows 7 because I still need to talk to 2004. Using Mathematica and QGIS there is not uncommon.
At home I'm using it for basically run my life and keep myself alive as an one-guy shop freelancer (please hire me!). When I'm not billing hours, it's a recording studio and a movie projector. My list of hobbies includes things like software-defined radio, font creation, vintage synthesizer modeling and underground internet data piracy. The 14" is ideal because I'm travelling around everywhere with it and oh yeah, it has my entire record collection.

ET, snap, at least on some of those.
I’m do a lot of QGIS work right now and the MCP is making it very fast. I also now have a docker container running with a database containing a lot of the public data I’m working with because it’s all the APIs are frustratingly rare limited. For fun I built an iOS app to take to sites and bring up my maps and make notes.
Lots of energy modelling as well and dealing with the incredibly badly architected historical data stores of the national electricity market (this is a theme in Australian public data). Lots of python and Julia (10years of energy data broke python but Julia seems to handle it).
Then for fun I’m trying to offload a lot more tasks onto local models; so to build my skills on this I’m trying to build an agentic/ML pipeline to turn engineering drawings into 3D models. This is a legit hard task but I’m having a lot of fun trying to work it out.
It’s also the sort of thing i can work on whilst lying on the floor next to my son as he drifts off to sleep.
The M4 is such an insanely capable chip. I only have the Air with 32GB but it’s a thing of wonder.

Just setting myself as a contractor developer after 10 years being a permanent employee… the temptation to get someting else other than my M1 Pro is very compelling even though I know it is well up to the task at hand.

After careful consideration, I think my first action as Apple CEO would be to finally dissolve Claris (it's still around!) and make FileMaker part of the Pages, Numbers, etc. group of mostly free apps. Hypercard used to be free. FM is still super-useful but it's just out there twisting in the wind. Claris' current CEO is a former sales guy who's obsessed with nebulous "AI" features, outrageous licensing fees, and has a predilection for going on /r/filemaker and making fun of people who want to switch away from FM because of that.
