my parents bought a place in SC earlier this year. about 20 minutes south of Myrtle Beach. they asked me what i thought beforehand and i told them that i would never invest in a place on the mid-atlantic coast because of climate change, gave the russian roulette analogy with additional bullets being added to the chamber every few years, all that (my dad is a concealed carry kind of guy so i thought maybe that would resonate with him). they still think that climate change is a hoax and that it can't be real because god promised never to punish humans with a big flood again.
anyway, hopefully god will cause the storm the die down somewhere off in the ocean
― Karl Malone, Monday, 10 September 2018 21:39 (seven years ago)
'I promise that never again will all living beings be destroyed by a flood; never again will a flood destroy the earth' leaves a fair bit of leeway for climate change and rising seas imo
― mookieproof, Monday, 10 September 2018 21:52 (seven years ago)
it's true, but i feel like granting their premise is a step too far
― Karl Malone, Monday, 10 September 2018 21:56 (seven years ago)
i hope all come through safely and well.
my 88 y/o mom is a little to the south of expected landfall. she'll be evacuated and i am v confident that she'll be ok, but i am actually ao glad my dad died 2 weeks ago. he was in memory care nearby, and it would have been a)stressful b)difficult c) possibly traumatic for them both to endure the compounded evacuation and possible separation, one aware in a hellspace, the other knowing who knows what.

I live in a brick house on a hill and all the power lines in DC are underground but this is probably going to suck
― Paleo Weltschmerz (El Tomboto), Tuesday, 11 September 2018 13:05 (seven years ago)
I don't intend this as discouragement or cause for worry, but with the levels of rainfall predicted underground lines may be just as vulnerable.

Shout out to my parents who are driving to VA today to empty all their possessions out of a severely damaged boat (latest tragedy, negligence of marina) and then taking shelter in DC to wait it out before going back to the boat to re-secure it. They’re pretty intrepid but fingers crossed all the same.

Yep from MI. Basically driving right into the storm and waiting it out. Less than ideal but I guess if anywhere gets services back up quickly it’ll be DC.

there is a trump golf course in charlotte
My favourite Trump lie from the last week of August was his claim, at an official event, that the lake beside his Charlotte golf course is the "largest man-made lake in the world, by far."The largest man-made lake in the United States is 25 times larger. pic.twitter.com/cbcBQQW0yp— Daniel Dale (@ddale8) September 12, 2018

Another reminder there that there are some fucking idiots in government with a wilful disregard for science and risk management in the name of lining their or their cronies pockets.

Trump grifted BK, would not surprise me if the ploots try to figure out ways to grift seaside flooding policies to get direct public subsidies for their direct losses or even hypothetical losses for anticipated investment expectations or something else obviously ridiculous. Like- “that rezoning for my planned hotel property which is now underwater is just a federal takings!” “Uh, its not rezoned, its just...underwater” “ONLY BECAUSE THE GOVT WOULD NOT PAY FOR EMBANKMENTS DREDGING AND OTHER FLOOD CONTROL, IT’S ANTIAMERICAN!”
