I Love Politics board?

I thought most people use the Site New Answers link. I always assumed people get pissy about the politics threads because that they think it takes away from traffic on other general topic threads.

but of course i'm someone who comes here at this point as much or more to get exposed to challenging political ideas

well, people use SNA but you customize that. the argument would be, i think, that if there were an I Love Politics board, those who never wanted to see politics threads could have that one turned off and wouldn't see it in their SNA.

@ Mordy - it's true! being on ILX has been one major factor in my getting leftier with the years, and watching how others articulate their POVs has helped me practice and better define mine. also getting exposed in depth in more specific discussions like, idk, Gamergate thread or Techno-Utopianism is both a space for me to try out shit i've been thinking/reading about, and to realize additional connections between those and capital-P Politics threads.

I think Mordy probably means that he's one of the ppl who's political views challenge ilx status quo views and maybe they were not shall we say enthusiastically received?

moving politics to a sub-board will likely have the effect of increasing the number of threads about politics and activity on them in the short-term (i'm talking during the first week, when it is new and shiny), then reducing the overall amount of posts and people looking at the politics threads afterward. i'm sure that will thrill a lot of people, but i'm one of the people upper-decking the current politics threads on a daily basis so of course i'm inclined to keep things as they are.

the worst feature of the us politics threads predates the current president: it's the attention given to media and how bad it is, at the evident expense of other frameworks. there's lots of competition for what those other frameworks could be and I don't mean to suppose that my favored ones would be popular here & that's fine, but the media one, it's like talking about rock critics instead of about rock.

basically there was this old h@rv4rd philosopher who said "philosophy is bullshit but history of philosophy, that's scholarship" & that view is bad enough, imagine if we did history of history of philosophy, like, that's what happens here for politics way too much

I mostly just want to mod a board, which I’m not sure the higher ups were even really considering

the phenomenon DC describes takes place on "democratic party direction", the left- and right-wing drift threads, the organizing thread, the silicon valley thread, occasionally the scotus thread etc.. (and of course brit politics threads.) it does not take place on the monthly trump threads, which are foolish garbage without exception. one active thread of foolish garbage at a time p much is a sub-board.

Yeah, if you're a duplicitously Eurosceptic tankie whose bedside bibles are The Foundations of Geopolitics and The Protocols of the Elders of Zion (grossly exaggerating for effect, obviously, but the doctrinaire partisanship is hard to stomach – there are plenty of reasons to support Corbyn, and even more reasons to despise May, but current UK politics strikes me as rifer with gray areas than its US counterpart).

I refuse to take seriously anyone who thinks a) Russia isn't that bad, the West is the sole vilain!; b) Corbyn's comments about English irony were not antisemitic; c) Brexit is ultimately a good thing as it is merely the first, necessary step towards utopia on a global scale.

I do sometimes feel like the US Politics thread is too much of a giant clutter heap (and yes dominated by Trump), but that can be solved just by making other politics related threads? Like you could just start a Rolling US Non-Trump-Related Politics thread, or a Rolling US state and local politics thread, or a rolling congress/legislation thread or something?

I feel politically homeless. I want about 90% of the UK political classes to be liquidated. But all I could find in the last Labour manifesto was boring stuff about bringing PFI's back in house, re-nationalising utilities and public transport, not being such dicks to the poor and disabled etc...

having a bunch of parallel US politics threads would be a drag - same articles getting posted/discussed in multiple places. the dem party direction one is distinct enough, because they're not in govt and don't drive most of the main politics news etc.

Yeah, I agree. I think the solution is for trump to not be president. He dominates us politics, therefore he dominates the us politics thread. This’ll work itself out.
