why is there an i love film board but lots & lots of threads about movies & teevee on ILE ?

do this and make treesh a mod; excising politics is the only way to save the patient at this pt

Mordy, Friday, 7 September 2018 19:59 (five years ago) link

I think a new board would be good. It probably won't impact me personally, but it really does seem like ILE is overloaded with politics threads, and that it's causing a bad experience for a lot of folks that come here to get away from politics

Yes please. A quarantine is long overdue.

pomenitul, Saturday, 8 September 2018 08:43 (five years ago) link

I can't imagine how an ILX user with a disdain for political threads keeps accidentally clicking on them when they are clearly labelled thus. Or even going one step further and accidentally engaging with them!

calzino, Saturday, 8 September 2018 08:51 (five years ago) link

Let's just fuse all boards, that'll solve it.

pomenitul, Saturday, 8 September 2018 09:33 (five years ago) link

well with yr movies & teevee I can't always tell from the titles what it's about
would be happy just to be able to hide threads I guess
the level of politics discourse here is generally rather low but as a substitute for having to wade through twitter, usa newspapers, etc., it works well

droit au butt (Euler), Saturday, 8 September 2018 11:36 (five years ago) link

With any luck the sheer volume of political posting will return to a more tolerable background noise level after the current moment in history passes over and there’s less shit to be appalled by on a daily basis.

Paleo Weltschmerz (El Tomboto), Saturday, 8 September 2018 13:09 (five years ago) link

I refuse to accept the current political climate in the anglosphere as “the new normal,” basically

Paleo Weltschmerz (El Tomboto), Saturday, 8 September 2018 13:10 (five years ago) link

it's not the "new normal", but only because things are going to get a lot worse from here

i wouldn't bank on any kind of restoration of 2015-era status quo

I think it will get better because of the progressive insurgencies in the democratic party represented by ocasio cortez and others is coinciding with the republican party’s ultimate disgrace, which is just taking longer than people anticipated.

crüt, Saturday, 8 September 2018 14:40 (five years ago) link

I don't understand how the politics thread or threads could be more clearly labeled?

like 95% of the politics discussion happens on 3 threads

I'm generally against sub boards with exception like sports ones makes sense

even I love books I wish wasn't, I feel really too much of a country rube to stumble into that but would be fun to discuss books

i read that thing obama said yesterday. he always was good at speeches. he's on a total "life of brian" trip right now. me, i'm down with it. i try to always look on the bright side of life.

milkshake duck george bernard shaw (rushomancy), Saturday, 8 September 2018 14:48 (five years ago) link

whatever the "level" of discussion is honestly the media/social media landscape is so dire, even at it's most contentious the ilx us politics thread is a way I can guarantee I stay on top of any story though a filter of goofiness and/or predictable/adorbs quirks like tombot hulking out and calling everyone fucking idiots or Morbs Perrin stuff etc etc etc

a subboard will have less discussion and be less useful

Οὖτις, Saturday, 8 September 2018 14:57 (five years ago) link

I enjoy the politics threads sometimes, but I do think ilx being taken over by trump discussion has paralleled the rest of the culture, in which trump now looms over everything, and I hate it. Moving the politics thread to its own board would give some breathing room to other topics.

Trϵϵship, Saturday, 8 September 2018 14:57 (five years ago) link

Threads arent plants

Οὖτις, Saturday, 8 September 2018 15:01 (five years ago) link

Lets move all threads to sub boards then we can live peacefully in our microcurated bubbles

Οὖτις, Saturday, 8 September 2018 15:04 (five years ago) link

yeah Treesh tbh the best way to avoid trump discussion is to just not read the politics threads. ime it isn't really taking over anything else i have my bookmarks on.

how's life's mockup does reveal that ILE has tons of 'political' topics in SNA... but is this actually that different than other points in the board's history? especially if things like the (still-horribly-named) spree shooting thread count... at what point are all "news" or "unfolding news story" threads "politics"? like by that standard, the baseline version of the site, if someone turned off all subboards on their Site New Answers preferences, and if people actually kept movie stuff in I Love Film, sports stuff in sports boards (etc.) would end up being:

idk my feeling is like ILE is the universal water cooler, this mix of shit that's actively on people's minds cause it's currently going on, and random conversation starters around whatever miscellaneous topic. an ILE where the 9/11 or regular election threads were hived off for people interested in the news would be a really weird ILE, one that treats major pressing issues as the equivalent of niche hobbies. i could imagine a scenario a bit like I Love Film where blockbuster crossover stuff that will get thousands of posts is expected to appear in ILE (e.g. the monthly US Politics threads), but issue-specific questions that are just going to be four or five people arguing with each other migrate to the subboard? so that there's only a few "politics" threads in your ILE SNA if you really really don't want to see all the others...? idk it still seems weird but of course i'm someone who comes here at this point as much or more to get exposed to challenging political ideas and figure out my own positions on things. and yes, to keep up with the news in a way far far superior to any other.

I thought most people use the Site New Answers link. I always assumed people get pissy about the politics threads because that they think it takes away from traffic on other general topic threads.

Yerac, Saturday, 8 September 2018 15:32 (five years ago) link

but of course i'm someone who comes here at this point as much or more to get exposed to challenging political ideas

huh

Mordy, Saturday, 8 September 2018 15:33 (five years ago) link

well, people use SNA but you customize that. the argument would be, i think, that if there were an I Love Politics board, those who never wanted to see politics threads could have that one turned off and wouldn't see it in their SNA.

got the scuba tube blowin' like a snork (Doctor Casino), Saturday, 8 September 2018 15:33 (five years ago) link

oh nm i understand "challenging"

Mordy, Saturday, 8 September 2018 15:34 (five years ago) link

@ Mordy - it's true! being on ILX has been one major factor in my getting leftier with the years, and watching how others articulate their POVs has helped me practice and better define mine. also getting exposed in depth in more specific discussions like, idk, Gamergate thread or Techno-Utopianism is both a space for me to try out shit i've been thinking/reading about, and to realize additional connections between those and capital-P Politics threads.

got the scuba tube blowin' like a snork (Doctor Casino), Saturday, 8 September 2018 15:36 (five years ago) link

I think Mordy probably means that he's one of the ppl who's political views challenge ilx status quo views and maybe they were not shall we say enthusiastically received?

The Desus & Mero Chain (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Saturday, 8 September 2018 15:53 (five years ago) link

moving politics to a sub-board will likely have the effect of increasing the number of threads about politics and activity on them in the short-term (i'm talking during the first week, when it is new and shiny), then reducing the overall amount of posts and people looking at the politics threads afterward. i'm sure that will thrill a lot of people, but i'm one of the people upper-decking the current politics threads on a daily basis so of course i'm inclined to keep things as they are.

ILX british politics thread are good #content even if I only understand 50% of the words being used

the worst feature of the us politics threads predates the current president: it's the attention given to media and how bad it is, at the evident expense of other frameworks. there's lots of competition for what those other frameworks could be and I don't mean to suppose that my favored ones would be popular here & that's fine, but the media one, it's like talking about rock critics instead of about rock.

basically there was this old h@rv4rd philosopher who said "philosophy is bullshit but history of philosophy, that's scholarship" & that view is bad enough, imagine if we did history of history of philosophy, like, that's what happens here for politics way too much

the phenomenon DC describes takes place on "democratic party direction", the left- and right-wing drift threads, the organizing thread, the silicon valley thread, occasionally the scotus thread etc.. (and of course brit politics threads.) it does not take place on the monthly trump threads, which are foolish garbage without exception. one active thread of foolish garbage at a time p much is a sub-board.

Yeah, if you're a duplicitously Eurosceptic tankie whose bedside bibles are The Foundations of Geopolitics and The Protocols of the Elders of Zion (grossly exaggerating for effect, obviously, but the doctrinaire partisanship is hard to stomach – there are plenty of reasons to support Corbyn, and even more reasons to despise May, but current UK politics strikes me as rifer with gray areas than its US counterpart).

pomenitul, Saturday, 8 September 2018 19:52 (five years ago) link

I refuse to take seriously anyone who thinks a) Russia isn't that bad, the West is the sole vilain!; b) Corbyn's comments about English irony were not antisemitic; c) Brexit is ultimately a good thing as it is merely the first, necessary step towards utopia on a global scale.
